Endometriosis coexisting with dermoid cyst in a single ovary： a case report

Endometriosis coexisting with a dermoid cyst of the ovary is extraordinarily rare, although these both benign conditions are said to be common in women in the reproductive age group. There are only two previous case reports, which is evident from our literature review from January 1960 through January 2010. Acute abdomen is one of the greatest diagnostic challenges and easily ignored by the clinicians to exclude the possibility of gynecologic illness. A 35-year-old woman was referred by the doctor in Family clinic. She experienced a three-day period of severe right lower abdominal pain and intermittent vomiting. Ultrasonography identified a bilocular, cystic, hypoechoic, and hyperechoic tumor, 7 cm×6 cm×6 cm in the right adnexal region. Laparoscopic cystectomy was performed under the impression of ovarian cyst with torsion or hemorrhage. The frozen section was benign and appendiceal status was adequate. Histopathologic examination described an ovarian cyst composed of endometrial-type lining with stroma cells （endometriosis） and benign terotoma tissue with plenty of skin appendages and sebaceous glands. We report this unusual and interesting ovarian mass to remind physicians that the usage of the Endobag after cystectomy, the benefits on minimizing operative time, spilled opportunity, and postoperative complications. Laparoscopic techniques for large ovarian masses might be considered. The experience of the surgeon is also very important to prevent misdiagnosis or complication. Further follow up is mandatory for this simultaneous finding of ovarian endometriosis with coincidental dermoid cyst as a separate pathology in single ovary of such a nature. It also presents a challenge to the clinicians and to the pathologists.

Hepatic immune tolerance induced by hepatic stellate cells

The liver, which is a metabolic organ, plays a pivotal role in tolerance induction. Hepatic stellate cells(Hp SCs), which are unique non-parenchymal cells, exert potent immunoregulatory activity during cotransplantation with allogeneic islets effectively protecting the islet allografts from rejection. Multiple mechanisms participate in the immune tolerance induced by Hp SCs, including the marked expansion of myeloid-derived suppressor cells(MDSCs), attenuation of effector T cell functions and augmentation of regulatory T cells. Hp SC conditioned MDSC-based immunotherapy has been conducted in mice with autoimmune disease and the results show that this technique may be promising. This article demonstrates how Hp SCs orchestrate both innate immunity and adaptive immunity to build a negative network that leads to immune tolerance.

Objective:To investigate the efficacy of frankincense and myrrha in the treatment of acute interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome(IC/PBS).Methods:The effects of frankincense and myrrha on the proliferation and migration of primary human urothelial cells(HUCs)were assessed in *** the animal study,48 virgin female rats were randomized into 4 groups(12 in each group):(1)control group(saline-injected control);(2)cyclophosphamide(CYP)group(intraperitoneal injected 150 mg/kg CYP);(3)CYP+pentosan polysulfate sodium group(orally received 50 mg/kg pentosan polysulfate sodium);and(4)CYP+frankincense and myrrha group[orally received frankincense(200 mg/kg)and myrrha(200 mg/kg)].Rats orally received pentosan polysulfate sodium or frankincense and myrrha on day 1,2,and *** experiments were performed on day *** and cystometry assessment behavior test were *** interval values were assessed in rats under ***,immunohistochemistry and Western blot were used to confirm the location and level,respectively,of cell junction-associated protein zonula occludens-2(ZO-2)***:Low dose frankincense and myrrha increased cell proliferation and migration in HUCs compared with control(P<0.05).Rats with acute IC/PBS rats exhibited lower voiding interval values,pain tolerance,and ZO-2 expression(P<0.05).Voiding interval values and pain tolerance were higher in the frankincense and myrrha group than CYP group(P<0.05).ZO-2 expression in the bladder was increased in the CYP+pentosan polysulfate and frankincense+myrrha groups compared with the CYP-induced acute IC/PBS group(P<0.05).Conclusion:frankincense and myrrha modulate urothelial wound healing,which ameliorates typical features of acute IC/PBS in rats.

Background Long-term maintenance of sinus rhythm after successful conversion of chronic atrial fibrillation （CAF）, often ameliorates patients＇ symptoms, reduces the risk of ischemic stroke and improves cardiovascular hemodynamics. This prospective study aims to evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety of very low-dose amiodarone （100 mg daily） for the maintenance of sinus rhythm after successful direct-current （DC） cardioversion in patients with CAF and rheumatic heart disease （RHD） post intervention. Methods This study was a randomized prospective trial. One day after successful DC cardioversion （remained normal sinus rhythm） in patients with CAF and RHD post intervention for more than six months and adequate anticoagulation, all were randomly administered either amiodarone 200 mg daily in group A or amiodarone 100 mg dally in group B. Results A total of 76 patients （40 men and 36 women） were examined from February 1998 to December 1999. The mean age of the patients was （664- 10） years, and the mean follow-up was （674-8） months （range 61 to 84 months）. Actuarial rates of the maintenance of sinus rhythm were similar in the two groups after 5 years of follow-up. Four patients （11%） in group A but none in group B experienced significant adverse effects that necessitated withdrawal of amiodarone. No death occurred during the study period. Conclusion A very low dose of amiodarone results in adequate long-term efficacy and is safe for maintaining sinus rhythm in patients with CAF and RHD post intervention after successful DC cardioversion.

AIM:To verify gene expression profiles for colorectal cancer using 12 internet public microarray ***:Logistic regression analysis was performed,and odds ratios for each gene were determined between colorectal cancer(CRC)and *** microarray datasets of GSE 4107,4183,8671,9348,10961,13067,13294,13471,14333,15960,17538,and 18105,which included 519 cases of adenocarcinoma and 88 normal mucosa controls,were pooled and used to verify 17 selective genes from 3 published studies and estimate the external ***:We validated the 17 CRC-associated genes from studies by chang et al(Model 1:5 genes),Marshall et al(Model 2:7 genes)and Han et al(Model 3:5genes)and performed the multivariate logistic regression analysis using the pooled 12 public microarray datasets as well as the external *** goodnessof-fit test of Hosmer-Lemeshow(H-L)showed statistical significance(P=0.044)for Model 2 of Marshall et al in which observed event rates did not match expected event rates in subgroups of the model *** and observed event rates in subgroups were similar,which are called well calibrated,in Models 1,3and 4 with non-significant P values of 0.460,0.194 and1.000 for H-L tests,respectively.A 7-gene model of CPEB4,EIF2S3,MGC20553,MS4A1,ANXA3,TNFAIP6and IL2RB was pairwise selected,which showed the best results in logistic regression analysis(H-L P=1.000,R2=0.951,areas under the curve=0.999,accuracy=0.968,specificity=0.966 and sensitivity=0.994).CONCLUSION:A novel gene expression profile was associated with CRC and can potentially be applied to blood-based detection assays.
