This essay will review the earliest case that documents a patient’s experience of qi,one found on a bamboo text buried with the patient who died in the 318 BCE.Details of the healing encounter and of concepts of illness show how non-transmitted documents hidden from later editors in tombs preserve an older layer of medical understanding than that in transmitted canons,such as the Huang Di Nei Jing(Inner Canon of the Yellow Emperor).The 4th-century BCE case record described below is the longest early medical record concerning the treatment of a specific individual.It is also an account of failure formally recorded for the sake of the survivors and buried with the dead to be transmitted to the world of the spirits.The essay begins with a reevaluation of ancient concept of qi and then moves on to the individual case record.

This essay discusses the manifold depictions of Saint Michael The Archangel in Italian Renaissance art,in particular in Giorgio Vasari’s imagery.It starts with a brief explanation of who Michael The Archangel is,explores his visual iconography in pagan,Judeo-Christian,and Byzantine imagery,and examines the impact of Renaissance Neoplatonism on the interpretation of Saint Michael and his symbolic roles.The Renaissance Neoplatonic philosopher Marsilio Ficino explained the significance of the Platonic celestial ladder as a spiritual vehicle for the human soul to achieve divine love.One step of this ladder is the Angelic Mind.It is here that the sparkling light of the realm of the Angelic Mind reveals the splendor and beauty of God’s grace.This is the realm where Michael,a Seraphim and a messenger of God,resides,delivering God’s messages of grace and love to humanity throughout the world.Giorgio Vasari(1511-1574)visualized these divine messages metaphorically in frescos on two major vaults.The first is in the small cupola of the Pope Pius V Chapel in the Vatican,once called Saint Michael’s Chapel,where between 1560 and 1566 Vasari and his assistants painted al fresco the Saint Michael and the Devils,a depiction of Michael the Archangel combatting vices personified as demons who want to prevent human beings from obtaining the divine grace that will allow their souls to ascend toward heaven(Figure 1).Between 1570 and 1574,Vasari continued his metaphorical visualization of God’s divine message in a large vault,the octagonal cupola of Santa Maria del Fiore,the Dome of the Cathedral of Florence,the major focus in this essay(Figure 2).He and his assistants painted al fresco the Last Judgment,portraying Saint Michael The Archangel residing in a heavenly realm-the divine reign of God,where he mediates and witnesses God’s divine judgment on humankind(Figure 13).Here,celestial trumpeters loudly announce the separation of good and bad souls of the terrestrial realm,Earth.The bad souls rapidly descend into a Dantesque infernal r

There is near unanimous consensus that the global climate is warming and most of the warming is attributable to human activities.The world economic expansion has largely been driven by fossil fuels,leading to increasing emissions of greenhouse gases(GHGs).The world’s average temperature has risen at a rate of 0.07℃per decade since 1880 and nearly triple that rate since the 1990s.In addition to heat waves and cold spell,climate change may lead to a wide range of extreme weather conditions,including drought,floods,typhoons,windstorms,and landslides.Exposure to non-optimal temperatures and extreme weather conditions has been associated with a range of adverse health outcomes,including excess mortality and morbidity from various causes,and changes in the ecology of infectious diseases.For example,in China,14.3%of non-accidental mortality during 2013–2015 may be related to non-optimal temperatures,with 11.6%and 2.7%explainable by exposure to cold and heat,respectively(1).The recent global burden of diseases study(GBD 2019)shows that non-optimal temperatures are among the ten leading causes of death worldwide(2).A projection study showed that under high-emission scenarios,the negative health impacts of climate change would disproportionately affect warmer and poorer regions of the world(3).Climate change can also affect climate-sensitive infectious diseases carried by animal hosts or vectors,including malaria,dengue fever,schistosomiasis,Japanese encephalitis,and Angiostrongylus cantonensis.

This paper analyzes the impact of the Belt and Road Initiative on Europe with a specificfocus on ltaly. We concentrate on the impact of new railways and port infrastructures onbilateral trade. Our analysis suggests that the development of new railway connectionswill benefit most of the Northern and Central European countries. Some industries likeautomotive and electronics that have a higher value to weight ratio will benefit morethan others. However, due to higher costs, railway services will never reach a highpercentage of total import^export flows. Investment in new port facilities, although less＂new＂ compared with railways, may be a bigger game changer. The development ofthe Port of Piraeus has already increased the importance of the Mediterranean Sea asan import^export hub for China. If the other planned investments in Egypt and Algeriaare completed, this phenomenon will be magnified. This presents a huge challenge forItaly. The ltalian port in the high Adriatic Sea could be displaced by Piraeus capacity,especially if this port linked through railways with the center of Europe. Italy needsto coordinate its ports together with its railway network to take advantage of Belt andRoad Initiative opportunities.

MY China story,about the profound influence China has had on my life from childhood through to the present,is a long one that I hope will continue far into the future.I spent a great deal of my boyhood,more than 65 years ago,leafing through all kinds of books,admittedly drawn more to their vivid illustrations than texts.They included travel literature encompassing works by German zoologist Ernst Haeckel on Insulinde,the Latin name for what we call today Indonesia.Wonderstruck at their exotic images,especially of volcanoes,I vowed to see these distant outposts for myself.My dream was to venture beyond Southeast Asia to East Asia as a whole-to Japan and,of course,to China.

The past 2 years we now have behind us have demonstrated the importance of understanding the dynamics of zoonotic diseases in the wild and how the disease agents spill over to the human population.At the end of 2021,Integrative Zoology published 2 special subsections on this topic,one of which focuses on plague—a zoonotic infectious disease which through history has ravaged the world.Plague,caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis,continues to cause deaths among people.I am quite confident that we will not get rid of wildlife plague,but human plague epidemics might be history in the not too distant future(Baril et al.2019;Vallès et al.2020).
