Phenotypic and functional heterogeneity are the hallmarks of effector and memory T cells. Upon antigen stimulation, y T cells differentiate into two major types of memory T cells： central memory cells, which patrol the blood and secondary lymphoid organs, and effector memory cells, which migrate to peripheral tissues, y T cells display in vitroa certain degree of plasticity in their function that is reminiscent of that which is observed in conventional CD4 T cells. Similar to CD4 T cells, in which a plethora of specialized subsets affect the host response, y8 T cells may readily and rapidly assume distinct Thl-, Th2-, Th17-, TFH and T regulatory-like effector functions, suggesting that they profoundly influence cell-mediated and humoral immune responses. In addition to differences in cytokine repertoire, y~ T cells exhibit diversity in homing, such as migration to lymph node follicles, to help B cells versus migration to inflamed tissues. Here, we review our current understanding of y T-cell lineage heterogeneity and flexibility, with an emphasis on the human system, and propose a classification of effector y T cells based on distinct functional phenotypes.

AIM To uncover novel genetic markers that could contribute to predicting hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)susceptibility in Caucasians. Objective: The aim of the present study was to examine the efficacy of acupuncture in the treatment of pain together with the determination of different hormonal parameters for possible correlations in men and women of different ages. Methods: 39 women and 38 men suffering from pain and seeking acupuncture received acupuncture treatment twice a week for 5 weeks. Pain and quality of life parameters were collected via written questionnaires (VAS, QUID and SF-36), while testosterone and cortisol were determined in the saliva. Results: Cortisol and testosterone salivary levels were higher in controls than in pain subjects and higher in men than in women. Acupuncture treatment improved all parameters, decreased pain and changed the hormonal values differently depending on sex and age. Conclusions: Sex and age are important factors in changing the effects of acupuncture in the treatment of pain.

The effect of annual additions of composted sewage sludge (CS) and thermally dried sewage sludge (TS) at 80 t ha-1 on soil chemical properties was investigated for three years in a field experiment under semiarid conditions. Humic acids (HAs) isolated by conventional procedures from CS, TS, and unamended (SO) and sludge amended soils were analysed for elemental (C, H, N, S and O) and acidic functional groups (carboxylic and phenolic) and by ultraviolet-visible, Fourier transform infrared and fluorescence spectroscopies. With respect to CS, TS had similar pH and total P and K contents, larger dry matter, total organic C, total N and C/N ratio and smaller ash content and electrical conductivity. Amendment with both CS and TS induced a number of modifications in soil properties, including an increase of pH, electrical conductivity, total organic C, total N, and available P. The CS-HA had greater O, total acidity, carboxyl, and phenolic OH group contents and smaller C and H contents than TS-HA. The CS-HA and TS-HA had larger N and S contents, smaller C, O and acidic functional group contents, and lower aromatic polycondensation and humification degrees than SO-HA. Amended soil-HAs showed C, H, N and S contents larger than SO-HA, suggesting that sludge HAs were partially incorporated into soil HAs. These effects were more evident with increasing number of sludge applications.

To obtain a real-time image of atmospheric particulate matter (PM) in highly polluted areas and to understand how the anthropogenic component linked to urban activities (industrial activities, domestic heating, road traffic, waste disposal) can locally affect near-surface measurement of PM, several measurement campaigns were achieved in the Campania region (Southern Italy) using both Lidar and in-situ instruments. A comparison between the obtained results highlights a good correlation between the data and the potential of remote sensing instruments for air quality monitoring. Data analysis was performed in terms of particle backscattering coefficient profile at 355 nm, PM mass concentration, and size distribution. Wind profiles, which covered a range of altitudes from 40 m to 290 m, were also used to study sources and physical processes involved. Measurement carried out in a rural area with a landfill site highlighted the presence of a homogeneous particulate layer throughout the sounded area due to winds driving aerosol from the landfill to the surrounding areas. The size distribution in mass concentration, highlighted a modal diameter moving towards 0.9 and 2 μm with a larger mass concentration of particles in the morning, before noon and in the afternoon when a large number of trucks delivered solid wastes. Moreover, large concentrations of particulate matter were measured in a small urban town with few industrial activities which peak (211 ± 33 μg·m-3) was measured in the direction of the most urbanized area, probably due to the lighting of the domestic heating systems. Bimodal size distribution in number concentration was measured, indicative of two types of atmospheric particles sources: gas and liquid combustion (particles with sizes below 80 nm), including vehicular traffic and domestic gas-heating, and biomass combustion (particles with sizes of the order of 200 - 500 nm). In this research, soil microbial structures under a wheat triennial monoculture and horse bean-wheat-horse bean succession were evidenced using a metagenomic approach. Polymorphism analysis of DNA extracted from soil samples collected at the end of the third year of the two crop successions, was performed by PCR, carried-out with six different primers designed on simple tandem repeats sequences. Readable profiles were obtained with M13 primer, from which no polymorphisms were detected, and with the primer (GACA)4, that gave distinctive patterns. experimental findings suggest that metagenomic analysis performed by (GACA)4 primer may be an easy and suitable method to discriminate microbial diversity of different crop successions. (GACA)4 PCR-pattern indicate that soil microbiota changes are well correlated with crop succession.

Compost and Compost Tea Management of Mini Watermelon Cultivations Affects the Chemical, Physical and Sensory Assessment of the Fruits

Compost, rich in plant nutrients, is a readily available fertilizer with beneficial effects on physical, chemical, biochemical and biological properties of the soils. Moreover compost-based treatments can exert protective effects against plant diseases occurrence and/or stimulate an enhanced plant physiological status with improvements in quantity and quality of crop productions. In this study the effects of three different compost-based cropping managements on the productive response and main quality parameters of watermelon fruits were investigated. Treatments, in comparison with the conventional cultivation method, were: soil amendment with an agricultural waste compost (AWC), a municipal waste compost (MWC) and a foliar treatment with a compost tea blend (CTB). The productive responses and colour parameters related to compost treatments did not show significant differences compared to control ones, which reached a total yield of about 10.22 kg·m-2 with a mean weight of 2.74 kg. AWC caused a higher ascorbic acid content with an increase of 50% than conventional treatment, while fruits obtained by CTB showed higher values in firmness and Quality Index than control samples. The analysis of main sugars highlighted that the application of compost as biofertilizer influenced the ratio among fructose, glucose and sucrose with respect to those observed for control fruits.
