Towards defining soil quality of Mediterranean calcareous agricultural soils:Reference values and potential core indicator set

To avoid soil degradation,adapt to climate change and comply with the Sustainable development goals 2030(Un General Assembly),establishing the quality/fertility of the agricultural soils of the Mediterranean region and evaluate how these evolve with time is mandatory.This enables adequate management practices to be implemented.The Mediterranean calcareous region has received little attention in this sense,in spite its soil particularities.So,24 different representative calcareous agricultural soils of the Mediterranean region,including the main management strategies of agricultural soils(rainfed and irrigated),were sampled from the island of Mallorca;and their physical,chemical and biological properties determined.The values obtained for most of the soil characteristics allowed to establish an initial approach to the reference values for the type of calcareous agricultural soils considered,and to clearly distinguish the effect of rainfed or irrigation management practices on soils properties and dynamics.Some enzyme activities were not stimulated by the irrigation conditions assayed or they were only in dry conditions,suggesting optimum enzyme activities could be obtained when alternating dry and humid soil conditions.Soil organic carbon,calcium carbonate and active lime revealed of significant importance in the collection of soils.Finally,the results obtained clearly indicate the heterogeneity of the region and its implications on the different soil characteristics.Therefore,this study could serve as a starting point to adequately establish the quality(fertility)for Mediterranean calcareous agricultural soils and their reference values by conducting further research in this region and including more type of soils.

The present study aimed to evaluate multi-element concentrations(Al,As,Ca,Cd,Co,Cr,Cu,Fe,Mg,Mn,Mo,ni,Pb,Sr)in suspended particulate material(SPM)collected from Ensenada de La Paz(ELP)lagoon,Baja California Sur,Mexico in two different periods(September and May)to comprehend their origin,geochemical behavior,mass transfer and associated ecotoxicological risks.The 24 hr variation coefficient of volumetric SPM levels were found to be 51.7%in September and 40.5%in May,signifying the effects of oceanic waters.The calculated enrichment factor(EF)values for all the studied elements were of higher magnitude because of the high surface area and oxide nature of SPM,and in this study,Mo had the highest EF of 46.77 probably due to its origin from continental weathering.From the ecotoxicological perspective,the integrated toxic risk index revealed low toxic risk to the benthic community.However,the mean-ERM-Quotient calculated using the particulate concentrations of As,Cd,Cr,Cu,ni,Pb indicated 9%probability of toxicity to biota.The comprehensive geochemical and ecotoxicological assessment of particulate metal concentrations in the ELP lagoon signify low to moderate contamination.

Overexpression of neurotrophic factors in nigral dopamine neurons is a promising approach to reverse neurodegeneration of the nigrostriatal dopamine system,a hallmark in Parkinson's disease.The human cerebral dopamine neurotrophic factor(h CDnF)has recently emerged as a strong candidate for Parkinson's disease therapy.This study shows that h CDnF expression in dopamine neurons using the neurotensinpolyplex nanoparticle system reverses 6-hydroxydopamine-induced morphological,biochemical,and behavioral alterations.Three independent electron microscopy techniques showed that the neurotensin-polyplex nanoparticles containing the h CDnF gene,ranging in size from 20 to 150 nm,enabled the expression of a secretable h CDnF in vitro.Their injection in the substantia nigra compacta on day 21 after the 6-hydroxydopamine lesion resulted in detectable h CDnF in dopamine neurons,whose levels remained constant throughout the study in the substantia nigra compacta and striatum.Compared with the lesioned group,tyrosine hydroxylase-positive(TH^(+))nigral cell population and TH+fiber density rose in the substantia nigra compacta and striatum after h CDnF transfection.An increase inβIII-tubulin and growth-associated protein 43 phospho-S41(GAP43 p)followed TH^(+)cell recovery,as well as dopamine and its catabolite levels.Partial reversal(80%)of drugactivated circling behavior and full recovery of spontaneous motor and non-motor behavior were achieved.Brain-derived neurotrophic factor recovery in dopamine neurons that also occurred suggests its participation in the neurotrophic effects.These findings support the potential of nanoparticle-mediated h CDnF gene delivery to develop a disease-modifying treatment against Parkinson's disease.The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee of centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados approved our experimental procedures for animal use(authorization no.162-15)on June 9,2019.

Over the past decades,droughts and heatwaves frequently appeared in Western Europe(45°-65°n,10°W-20°E)during boreal summer,causing huge impacts on human society and ecosystems.Although these extremes are projected to increase in both frequency and intensity under a warming climate,our knowledge of their interdecadal variations and causes is relatively limited.Here we show that the droughts and heatwaves in Western Europe have shifted in their trends in the last decade:for 1979-2012,wind speed and precipitation have both strengthened in Western Europe;for 2012-2020,however,Western Europe have experienced declined wind speed,decreased precipitation,and higher air temperature,leading to more frequent droughts and heatwaves there.Recent changes in the WE climate and extremes are related to the variations of the north Atlantic westerly jet stream.In 1979-2012(2012-2020),the westerly jet stream shifted equatorward(poleward),which enhanced(reduced)transportation of water vapor fluxes from the north Atlantic Ocean to the European land areas,resulting in wetter(drier)surface in Western Europe.Further analysis suggests that phase changes in the Pacific decadal Oscillation could have played a key role in regulating the position of the jet stream,providing important implications for decadal predictions of the Western Europe summertime climate and weather extremes.

Large-scale ocean‒atmosphere circulations(LOACs)have a pronounced effect on the near-surface wind speed(nSWS).In this study,we discussed the contributions of zonal and meridional flows to nSWS changes and identify the possible association between the northern Hemisphere Annular Mode(nAM)and the nSWS changes over eastern China from 1979 to 2017.Results show that the reduction in nSWS over eastern China was mainly dominated by the weakening of the zonal wind component.nAM has a considerable effect on the nSWS over eastern China.When the nAM exhibits positive phases,the zonal-mean westerly weakens at low-to-mid-latitudes(10°-40°n).Meanwhile,descending flows prevail near 40°n,and ascending flows persist near 65°n in the troposphere.In the lower troposphere,there are northerly anomalies at low-to-mid-latitudes and southerly anomalies at mid-to-high latitudes(40°-70°n).The anomalous meridional flows transport heat from low to high latitudes and weaken the north‒south air temperature gradient.The decreased air temperature gradient over East Asia reduces the pressure gradient near the surface,decreasing nSWS in eastern China.nAM variations could dominate(32.0±15.8)%of the changes in the annual mean nSWS.nevertheless,the contribution of nAM to the interannual changes of the zonal component in nSWS could reach(45.0±12.9)%.

A biomonitoring study was carried out to examine the adverse impacts of total mercury in the blood(HgB), urine(Hg U) and human scalp hair(HgH) on the residents of a mining district in Colombia. Representative biological samples(scalp hair, urine and blood) were collected from volunteered participants(n = 63) to estimate the exposure levels of THg using a Direct mercury analyzer. The geometric mean of THg concentrations in the hair,urine and blood of males were 15.98 μg/g, 23.89 μg/L and 11.29 μg/L respectively, whereas the females presented values of 8.55 μg/g, 5.37 μg/L and 8.80 μg/L. Chronic urinary Hg(HgU)levels observed in male workers(32.53 μg/L) are attributed to their long termed exposures to inorganic and metallic mercury from gold panning activities. On an average, the levels of THg are increasing from blood(10.05 μg/L) to hair(12.27 μg/g) to urine(14.63 μg/L).Significant positive correlation was found between hair and blood urinary levels in both male and female individuals. Thus the present biomonitoring investigation to evaluate the Hg levels and associated health issues would positively form a framework for further developmental plans and policies in building an ecofriendly ecosystem.
