Functionalization of AuMSS nanorods towards more effective cancer therapies

The applicatio n of nano particles as selective drug delivery platforms arises as one the most promising therapeutic strategies in the biomedical field. Such systems can encapsulate drugs, prevent its premature degradation, transport and promote the drugs specific delivery to the target site. Among the different nanostructures, gold-core mesoporous silica shell (AuMSS) nanorods have been one of the most explored due to their unique physical and chemical properties. The mesoporous silica biocompatibility, high surface area that can be easily functionalized, tubular pores that can store the drugs, conjugated with the intrinsic capacity of gold nanorod to absorb near-infrared radiation, allows the combination of hyperthermia (i.e., photothermal effect) with drug delivery, making them a nanoplatforms with a huge potential for cancer therapy. Nevertheless, the successful applicati on of AuMSS nanoparticles as an effective can cer nano medicine is hindered by the uncon trolled release of the therapeutic payloads, limited blood circulation time and unfavorable pharmacokinetics. In this review, an overview of the modificati ons performed to improve the AuMSS nano rods applicati on in nanom edicine is provided, highlighting the practical approaches that enhaneed the AuMSS nanorods targeting, responsiveness to different stimuli, and blood circulation time. Further, the basics of AuMSS nano rods syn thesis procedures, gen eral properties, and its applicati on in can cer therapy are also described.

Purpose: To evaluate the antibacterial activity of Bothrops jararaca venom against bacterial clinical isolates. Methods: Antibacterial activity of Bothrops jararaca venom was evaluated through agar diffusion method against the following bacteria: Acinetobacter baumannii, oxacillinase-producing Acinetobacter baummanii, extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing (ESBL) Enterobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli, Escherichia coli ESBL, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Klebsiella pneumoniae ESBL, Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, metallo β-lactamase-producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, oxacillin resistant Staphylococus aureus (oRSA), Staphylococcus epidermidis, and oxacillin resistant Staphylococus epidermidis.?Minimum inhibitory concentration was determined through microdilution plate protocol. Results: The venom presented antibacterial activity against all tested bacteria. More pronounced results were observed to Gram- positive bacteria, especially against oRSA. Conclusion: The present study evidenced the great antibacterial potential of Bothrops jararaca venom showing promising results even with resistant bacterial clinical isolates.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi（AMF） are important during revegetation of mining sites, but few studies compared AMF community in revegetated sites with pristine adjacent ecosystems. The aim of this study was to assess AMF species richness in a revegetated iron-mining site and adjacent ecosystems and to relate AMF occurrence to soil chemical parameters. Soil samples were collected in dry and rainy seasons in a revegetated iron-mining site（RA） and compared with pristine ecosystems of forest（FL）, canga（NG）,and Cerrado（CE）. AMF species were identified by spore morphology from field and trap cultures and by LSU r DNA sequencing using Illumina. A total of 62 AMF species were recovered, pertaining to 18 genera and nine families of Glomeromycota. The largest number of species and families were detected in RA, and Acaulospora mellea and Glomus sp1 were the most frequent species. Species belonging to Glomeraceae and Acaulosporaceae accounted for 42%–48% of total species richness. Total number of spores and mycorrhizal inoculum potential tended to be higher in the dry than in the rainy season, except in RA. Sequences of uncultured Glomerales were dominant in all sites and seasons and five species were detected exclusively by DNA-based identification. Redundancy analysis evidenced soil p H,organic matter, aluminum, and iron as main factors influencing AMF presence. In conclusion, revegetation of the iron-mining site seems to be effective in maintaining a diverse AMF community and different approaches are complementary to reveal AMF species, despite the larger number of species being identified by traditional identification of field spores.

1-Hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic Acid (HEDP) as a Corrosion Inhibitor of AISI 304 Stainless Steel in a Medium Containing Chloride and Sulfide Ions in the Presence of Different Metallic Cations

The novelty of this paper is the analysis in a medium containing sulfide ion due to the generation of this ion in petroleum industries, in the refining stage (the sulfide ion is also present on the produced water). The performance of 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid inhibitor (HEDP) was investigated by potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and weight loss measurements in a dissolution of AISI 304 stainless steel immersed in a solution containing chloride and sulfide ions. The protection of the stainless was increased with the addition of divalent cations (Ca2+, Zn2+, and Mg2+). Potentiodynamic polarization studies have shown that the inhibitor alone has anodic protection, but the addition of Ca2+ (10 mg·L-1) favors the cathodic protection, and the addition of Zn2+ (20 mg·L-1) and Mg2+ (10 mg·L-1) mixed-type is observed. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was performed at three distinct potentials: -0.3 [V vs. SCE], Ecorr [V vs. SCE], and 0.1 [V vs. SCE]. This revealed that calcium is responsible for favoring the formation of the film and the other elements (zinc and magnesium) favor the stabilization of the protective film. Scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed that the addition of cations provided the adsorption of HEDP on the metal surface. Weight loss results showed that the presence of zinc in a solution containing HEDP favored greater inhibitor efficiency (Zn2+ ηm = 85.2% and for Mg2+ ηm = 70.4%).

Visualizing Fit between dengue and Climatic Variables on Capitals of the Brazilian Northeast Region by Generalized Additive Models

Recent analysis indicates that the numbers of dengue cases may be as high as 400 million/year in the world. According to the Ministry of Brazilian Health, in 2015, there were 1,621,797 probable cases of dengue in the country including all classifications except discarded, the highest number recorded in the historical series since 1990. Many studies have found associations between climatic conditions and dengue transmission, especially using generalized models. In this study, Generalized Additive Models (GAM) was used associated to visreg package to understand the effect of climatic variables on capitals of Northeast Brazilian, from 2001 to 2012. From 12 climatic variables, it was verified that the relative humidity was the one that obtained the highest correlation to dengue. Afterwards, GAM associated with visreg was applied to understand the effects between them. Relative humidity explains the dengue incidence at an adjusted rate of 78.0% (in São Luis-MA) and 82.3% (in Teresina-PI) delayed in, respectively, -1 and -2 months.

Tunable Super-Structured Fiber Bragg Gratings with Perfect Sequences Based on m-Sequence

Recently, a tunable fiber Bragg grating(FBG) was developed by using stress-responsive colloidal crystals. In this paper, we have simulated the application of these nanoparticles into the super-structured fiber Bragg grating(SSFBG) written with perfect sequences derived from a short maximal-length sequence. A tunable SSFBG will be available to overcome the prohibitive temperature variation of the optical codecs. Nevertheless,we presented a method to implement coherent time spreading optical code-division multiple-access(oCDMA) where a unique code(or perfect sequence) can be reused and mixed with different wavelengths to obtain a tunable wavelength-division multiplexing(WDM)system. In order to maximize the binary throughput, we have selected a unique short maximal-length sequence composed of 7 chips that can be tuned with 7 different optical wavelengths. We found thousands of different tunable combinations that presented power contrast ratios(P/C) higher than 12 dB. When a WDM-oCDMA system used 2 different combinations simultaneously, the perfect binary detection with error correction codes was achieved successfully. The tunable SSFBG with colloidal crystals will be a simple and good alternative choice for fiber-to-the-home(FTTH) communications.

The Quaternary, like the long-abandoned terms Primary, Secondary and Tertiary, is a very ambiguous word, whose chronological meaning is not very well defined. Its usage spread very quickly, perhaps due to its more-or-less close relationship with the human history and with the latest glaciations. However, the oldest of human fossil record, according to recent discoveries in Africa （Djourab desert in Tchad）, is about 7 million years old, rather than 2 million years as suggested by fossils at olduvaL Moreover, for some time now, it has been known that the first Quaternary-type glaciations occurred in several regions of the Earth between 2.5 and 3 million years ago, that is prior to the Pliocene-Pleistocene limit at 1.81 million years ago, as determined by the GSSP. These facts have led some researchers, mostly from the International Union of Geological Sciences （lUGS）, and from the International Association for Quaternary Research （INQUA）, to suggest changes in the subdivision of the Neocenozoic. Certainly, discussions on this subject will be raised at many scientific meetings in the near future until almost unanimous agreement can be attained. Some additional suggestions are presented here, as a contribution to resolution of these nomenclatorial issues.

dengue is one of the most prominent tropical epidemic diseases present in the Rio de Janeiro city and Southeast part of Brazil, due to the widespread conditions of occurrence of the dengue vector, the mosquito Aedesaegypti, such as high-temperature days interlaced with afternoon or nocturnal rainstorms in summer. This work has the objective of investigating the relationships between variabilities of the El Ni?o-South oscillation (ENSo) and greater epidemics of dengue in Rio de Janeiro city. To accomplish this goal, the analysis and signal decomposition by cross-wavelet transform (WT) was applied to obtain the cross variability associated with variations of power and phase of both signals by characteristic periods and along with the time series. Data considered in the analysis are (the decimal logarithm of normalized value) of the monthly available notifications of dengue worsening, provided by the public health system of Brazil, and the Southern oscillation Index (SoI) Ni?o 3.4 data, provided by the National oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NoAA), in the period 2000-2017. A maximum cross-wavelet power close to 0.45 was obtained for the representative period of 1 year and also to periods between 3 and 4 years, associated with the positive phase of the SoI index (i.e. , La Ni?a) or with a transition to the positive phase. The evolution of the combined variability of SoI and dengue can be expressed by progressive differences in phase along the time, eventually resulting in yielding phases (i.e., La Niña-dengue epidemic).

S53G SNP in Cathepsin B: Can Be Used as a Molecular Biomarker to Breast Cancer?

Cathepsin B (CTS B) is a proteolytic enzyme that participates in several important biological processes. However, when it is altered can be involved in development of breast cancer, a disease with high incidence and mortality rate among women. Many studies have shown a correlation between high CTS B expression and breast tumor. Furthermore, it has been shown that the SNP rs1803250 (S53G) leads to structural and functional changes in protein that can make it pathogenic. The present study aimed to evaluate a possible association of SNP rs1803250 (S53G) with breast cancer. For this, real-time PCR was performed on a sample collected in the State of Pará, with 127 patients and 122 controls. The SNP frequency in this region was 0.12, according to a research project in progress that aims to identify Amerindians molecular alterations. This indicates that the SNP is found in region with a distribution close to worldwide frequency of 0.09. our results showed that the SNP was in Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium in collected sample, but C variant allelic frequency was 0.08 in both patients and control groups, which is extremely similar to global average. Moreover, homozygotes CC was not found in the sample and SNP genotypes frequency in patients and control groups was not significantly different. In addition, statistical analysis showed that the SNP did not have to correlate with tumor subtypes nor with tumor staging. Therefore, according to the analyzed sample, the SNP rs1803250 has no association with breast cancer and it cannot be considered a molecular biomarker for breast cancer.
