Silver impregnated carbon for adsorption and desorption of elemental mercury vapors

The Hg 0 vapor adsorption experimental results on a novel sorbent obtained by impregnating a commercially available activated carbon （Darco G60 from BDH） with silver nitrate were *** study was performed by using a fundamental approach,in an apparatus at laboratory scale in which a synthetic flue gas,formed by Hg 0 vapors in a nitrogen gas stream,at a given temperature and mercury concentration,was flowed through a fixed bed of adsorbent *** curves and adsorption isotherms were obtained for bed temperatures of 90,120 and 150°C and for Hg 0 concentrations in the gas varying in the range of 0.8–5.0 mg/m 3 .The experimental gas-solid equilibrium data were used to evaluate the Langmuir parameters and the heat of *** experimental results showed that silver impregnated carbon was very effective to capture elemental mercury and the amount of mercury adsorbed by the carbon decreased as the bed temperature *** addition,to evaluate the possibility of adsorbent recovery,desorption was also *** runs showed that both the adsorbing material and the mercury could be easily recovered,since at the end of desorption the residue on solid was almost *** material balance on mercury and the constitutive equations of the adsorption phenomenon were integrated,leading to the evaluation of only one kinetic parameter which fits well both the experimentally determined breakthrough and desorption curves.

Aims The physiological responses during dormancy removal and multi-phasic germination were investigated in seeds of Paeonia corsica(Paeoniaceae).Methods Seeds of *** were incubated in the light at a range of temperatures(10-25 and 25/10℃),without any pre-treatment,after W(3 months at 25℃),C(3 months at 5℃)and W+C(3 months at 25℃followed by 3 months at 5℃)stratification,and a GA_(3)treatment(250 mg·l^(−1)in the germination substrate).Embryo growth,time from testa to endosperm rupture and radicle emergence were assessed as separate ***-plumule emergence was evaluated incubating the germinated seeds at 15℃for 2 weeks,at 5 and 25℃for 2 months on agar water before transplanting to the soil substrate at 10,15 and 20℃and at 15℃for 2 months on the surface agar water with GA_(3).Important Findings Embryo growth,testa rupture,endosperm rupture(radicle emergence)and growth of the epicotyl were identified as four sequential steps in seeds of *** acid alone and warm stratification followed by 15℃promoted embryo growth and subsequent seed *** stratification induced secondary dormancy,even when applied after warm *** radicle emergence,epicotyl-plumule emergence was delayed for ca.3 *** time of epicotyl-plumule emergence was positively affected by cold stratification(2 months at 5℃)and GA_(3).*** seeds exhibited differential temperature sensitivity for the four sequential steps in the removal of dormancy and germination processes that resulted in the precise and optimal timing of seedling emergence.

We obtain two generalizations of a known theorem of A. Alam and M. Imdad (J. Fixed Point Theory Appl. 17 (2015) 693-702) showing that some standard proofs can be obtained involving only Cauchy sequences of the successive approximations. Suitable examples prove the effective generalization of our results in metric spaces not necessarily complete.

The Taylor Energy Oil Spill:Time-series of PolSAR Data to Support Continuous and Effective Observation

In this study,a large time series of Terra SAR-X Stripmap co-polarized(HH-VV)Synthetic Aperture Radar(SAR)imagery collected over the Taylor Energy oil platform site in the Gulf of Mexico is exploited to investigate this 13 year-long unconventional oil ***σCPDapproach is used to estimate the polluted area along *** addition,a sensitivity analysis is undertaken to point out the dependence ofσCPDto imaging(noise floor,incidence angle)and environment(sea state)*** results demonstrate thatσCPDcan be effectively used to monitor the Taylor Energy oil spill,estimating the polluted *** the TSX SAR data avail-ability most dense period(year 2013),a daily spill of about 2.2 km^(2) is observed in average,even though high variability(about 2.0 km^(2))is experienced due to the un-conventional characteristics of the spill.

An early evaluation of translocation actions for endangered plant species on Mediterranean islands

In situ conservation is widely considered a primary conservation strategy. Plant translocation, specifically, represents an important tool for reducing the extinction risk of threatened species. However, thus far, few documented translocations have been carried out in the Mediterranean islands. The CareMediflora project, carried out on six Mediterranean islands, tackles both short-and long-term needs for the insular endangered plants through in situ and ex situ conservation actions. The project approach is based on using ex situ activities as a tool to improve in situ conservation of threatened plant *** island plants(representing 45 taxa) were selected for translocations using common *** the translocations, several approaches were used, which differed in site selection method, origin of genetic material, type of propagative material, planting method, and more. Although only preliminary data are available, some general lessons can be learned from the experience of the CareMediflora project. Among the factors restricting the implementation of translocations, limited financial resources appear to be the most important. Specific preliminary management actions, sometimes to be reiterated after translocation, increase the overall cost, but often are necessary for translocation success. Translocation using juvenile/reproductive plants produces better results over the short term,although seeds may provide good results over the long run(to be assessed in the future). Regardless,plant translocation success can only be detected over long periods; therefore, proper evaluation of plant translocations requires a long-term monitoring protocol. Care-Mediflora project represents the first attempt to combine the existing approaches in a common plant conservation strategy specifically focusing on the Mediterranean islands.

AIM: To evaluate the clinical and endoscopic patterns in a large series of patients with metastatic tumors in the stomach. METHODS: A total of 64 patients with gastric meta- stases from solid malignant tumors were retros- pectively examined between 1990 and 2005. The clinicopathological findings were reviewed along with tumor characteristics such as endoscopic pattern, location, size and origin of the primary sites. RESULTS: Common indications for endoscopy were anemia, bleeding and epigastric pain. Metastases presented as solitary (62.5%) or multiple (37.5%) tumors were mainly located in the middle or upper third of stomach. The main primary metastatic tumors were from breast and lung cancer and malignant melanoma. CONCLUSION: As the prognosis of cancer patients has been improving gradually, gastrointestinal (GI) metastases will be encountered more often. Endoscopic examinations should be conducted carefully in patients with malignancies, and endoscopic biopsies and information on the patient’s clinical history are useful for correct diagnosis of gastric metastases.

MutL homolog 1 methylation and microsatellite instability in sporadic colorectal tumors among Filipinos

BACKGROUND Colorectal cancer(CRC)ranks third in terms of incidence and second in mortality *** CRC,the silencing of mismatch repair genes,including the mutL homolog 1(hMLH1)has been linked to microsatellite instability(MSI),the lengthening or shortening of microsatellite *** limited data have been presented so far on the link of hMLH1 methylation and MSI in Southeast Asia populations with sporadic CRC,and on its clinical *** To investigate the significance of the MSI status and hMLH1 methylation in CRC Filipino *** Fifty-four sporadic CRC patients with complete clinical data were included in this *** DNA from CRC tumor biopsies and their normal tissue counterparts were profiled for MSI by high resolution melting(HRM)analysis using the Bethesda Panel of Markers(BAT25,BAT26,D2S123,D5S346,and D17S250).hMLH1 methylation screening was performed using bisulfite conversion and methylation specific polymerase chain *** analysis was conducted to calculate their associations to clinicopathological characteristics and survival relevance(Kaplan-Meier curves and the log-rank test).RESULTS hMLH1 methylation was observed in 9%and 35%of CRC and normal samples,*** incidence of consistently methylated hMLH1 found in both normal and CRC was noticed for relation to location of tumor(P<0.05).As for MSI status,D2S123 the most common unstable microsatellite and MSI-high(MSIH)was the most common MSI profile,counted for 46%and 50%of normal and CRC tissues,*** presence of MSI-low(MSI-L)and microsatellite stable(MSS)was 43%and 11%for normal,and 31%and 19%for CRC *** mean month of patients’survival was shorter in patients whose normal and tumor tissues had methylated compared to those with unmethylated hMLH1 and with MSI-H compared to those with MSI-L/MSS(P<0.05).This was supported by significant difference in Kaplan-Meier with log-rank *** data indicated that hMLH1 methylation
