The path,value and limits of the confucius institute in carrying out public diplomacy

On the basis of Chinese language teaching and cultural communication activities,the confucius institute carries out a variety of cultural exchange activities between China and the host country,which has become an effective way for China to carry out public diplomacy and participate in global cultural *** analysing the concepts of public diplomacy,cultural diplomacy,people-to-people exchange and cultural governance,this paper summarises three typical paths of confucius institutes in carrying out public diplomacy:‘from the government to foreign nationals’,‘from the government to Chinese citizens and then to foreign nationals’,and‘from the government to foreign nationals and then to foreign nationals’.The value of the confucius institute in carrying out public diplomacy is reflected on the level of national diplomacy,international exchange and global ***,the capability of the confucius institute as a language and cultural communication institution initiated by China and in cooperation with other countries in carrying out public diplomacy is *** limitation,on one hand,originates from the nature of the confucius institute as a language and cultural communication organisation,and on the other hand,is related to the difficulties and challenges that China faces in its participation in global *** diplomacy and cultural diplomacy are based on national *** also transcend national interests and,furthermore,become a way for a country to actively participate in global cultural *** experience of and challenges faced by the confucius institute can have important implications for China in participating in global cultural governance.

Economic relations and the public image of China in Latin America:A cross-country time-series analysis

This article investigates the impact of Chinese economic activities in Latin America on the national image of China in the *** economic and public opinion data from 17 Latin American countries from 2001 to 2016,this work relates cross-national time-series variations regarding China’s image in Latin America to changes in the economic ties(such as trade,FDI,and contracts)between the perceiving countries and *** for the size of the economy and the level of its development,the statis-tical analysis indicates that trade surplus against China in Latin America has a positive effect on the public perceptions of China in the region,while Chinese FDI outflows to Latin America lead to a negative *** effects of Chinese contracts,imports,and exports tend not to be statistically *** also find less developed Latin American countries with low life expectancy and low educational attainment tend to have a more positive view of China than their richer counterparts in the ***,we find that Latin American countries under presidents with left-wing ideology have a much more positive view of China than countries under presidents with other ideological *** relations with China and China’s soft power influence as indexed by the presence of confucius institutes do not exhibit a strong impact on China’s national image in Latin America,compared with the dominant political ideology in a Latin American country as reflected in the president’s ideology.

A New Step for a Sustainable and Balanced Urban Policy in Asian Living Historic City Conservation: The Case of Qufu, China

Taking the case of Qufu(birthplace of confucius), China, a world cultural heritage site and a Chinese living historic city, the author analyses the current situation/issues of culture heritage assessment and the planning of urban conservation, renewal and development. The objective of this article is to explore related issues to generate guidance for selecting appropriate methodologies(strategies) and principles(tools/planning/tasks/action) to assess cultural heritage values and cultural signifi cance in the Asian living historic city context as part of an integrated culture-oriented development planning. The author calls for the necessity of an interdisciplinary approach to realize such development planning, with the participation of researchers and specialists from interdisciplinary areas: city planning, transportation, housing, territory studies, tourism, cultural heritage preservation, history, sociology, economy, archaeology, architecture, anthropology, museum studies, art/aesthetic studies, etc., for a new step in a sustainable and balanced urban policy.

Here I will examine the resemblances and similarities between Plato and two other personages, confucius and the Buddha, who were his near-contemporaries, and who enabled a breakthrough. The Platonic break with the world of bodies and the sphere of belief, in favor of a level of intelligible realities, the models of the sensible realities explained by mathematics and moved by the soul, explains the specificity of the Western world, in the field of science, politics, ethics, and even religion.

学者一般认为孔子纪年的设想初步形成于1891年前后。康有为首次使用孔子纪年则是在1895年创立的《强学报》第一期上,1898年他提倡把孔历当作国历。同年在新加坡,邱菽园在其创立的《天南新报》上也开始使用孔子纪年。然而在南洋,当时孔教和孔子纪元的观念却并非新鲜事物。根据一些华文碑铭和马来文的回忆录的记载,1880年前后出生于爪哇泗水的一位改革者周[平为],已经开始使用孔子纪年,其带有双重目的:一是提醒国人中国文化的本位意识,二是引进西洋的思想。因此,不仅关于孔子纪年的起始时间、起源地区需要重新检讨,而且对于处在多元文化交融与碰撞前沿的南洋华人在近代东西方文化交流中的地位与作用也需要郑重关注。
