Variability of the useful life of reservoirs in tropical locations:A case study from the Burdekin Falls Dam, Australia

Large dam construction for irrigation, hydropower, water supply, and flood control in tropical to subtropical areas increased markedly after 1950. Many of the dams built during this period have filled with sediment and no longer perform to their original design specifications; in many cases, forecast dam life was greatly overestimated. This study investigates the useful life of Burdekin Falls Dam(BFD), northeastern Australia and compares the findings with other tropical reservoirs. Using two independent methods it is estimated that between 61 and 65 million m3 of sediment has been deposited in the reservoir over the 24 years of operation through 2011. This sediment volume equates to an average of0.15% of capacity lost per year since construction was completed. If current sediment loads/climate regimes persist, reservoir capacity will be reduced by 50% after 345 years. However, the useful life of the BFD reduces to just 276 years when drawdown data are considered; these data show reservoir use would be affected once 40% of storage was filled with sediment, with a 60% drawdown return period of 1 in 15 years. When compared to similar large tropical to sub-tropical reservoirs, the BFD has a slightly longer reservoir useful life than dams in India and a much longer half-life than for both similar-sized and larger dams in China, Brazil, and Iran. Properties of the BFD that promote a longer useful life include a lower trap efficiency, relatively low annual sediment load delivered to the reservoir, limited sediment deposition behind the dam wall(and uniform distribution of deposited sediment), and the export of highly turbid annual floodwaters before settling and deposition of any remaining sediment within the reservoir.

Standardized high-throughput biomonitoring using DNA metabarcoding: Strategies for the adoption of automated liquid handlers

Reliable and comprehensive monitoring data are required to trace and counteract biodiversity loss. Highthroughput metabarcoding using DNA extracted from community samples (bulk) or from water orsediment (environmental DNA) has revolutionized biomonitoring, given the capability to assess biodiversity across the tree of life rapidly with feasible effort and at a modest price. DNA metabarcoding canbe upscaled to process hundreds of samples in parallel. However, while automated high-throughputanalysis workflows are well-established in the medical sector, manual sample processing still predominates in biomonitoring laboratory workflows limiting the upscaling and standardization for routinemonitoring applications. Here we present an automated, scalable, and reproducible metabarcodingworkflow to extract DNA from bulk samples, perform PCR and library preparation on a liquid *** features are the independent sample replication throughout the workflow and the use of manynegative controls for quality assurance and quality control. We generated two datasets: i) a validationdataset consisting of 42 individual arthropod specimens of different species, and ii) a routine monitoringdataset consisting of 60 stream macroinvertebrate bulk samples. As a marker, we used the mitochondrialCOI gene. Our results show that the developed single-deck workflow is free of laboratory-derivedcontamination and produces highly consistent results. Minor deviations between replicates are mostlydue to stochastic differences for low abundant OTUs. Thus, we successfully demonstrated that roboticliquid handling can be used reliably from DNA extraction to final library preparation on a single deck,thereby substantially increasing throughput, reducing costs, and increasing data robustness for biodiversity assessments and monitoring.

Convergent adaptation of the genomes of woody plants at the land–sea interface

Sequencing multiple species that share the same ecological niche may be a new frontier for genomic *** such studies should shed light on molecular convergence, genomic-level analyses have been unsuccessful, due mainly to the absence of empirical controls. Woody plant species that colonized the global tropical coasts, collectively referred to as mangroves, are ideal for convergence studies. Here, we sequenced the genomes/transcriptomes of 16 species belonging in three major mangrove clades. To detect convergence in a large phylogeny, a CCS+ model is implemented, extending the more limited CCS method(convergence at conservative sites). Using the empirical control for reference, the CCS+ model reduces the noises drastically, thus permitting the identification of 73 convergent genes with Ptrue(probability of true convergence) > 0.9. Products of the convergent genes tend to be on the plasma membrane associated with salinity tolerance. Importantly, convergence is more often manifested at a higher level than at amino-acid(AA) sites. Relative to >50 plant species, mangroves strongly prefer 4 AAs and avoid 5 others across the genome. AA substitutions between mangrove species strongly reflect these tendencies. In conclusion, the selection of taxa, the number of species and, in particular, the empirical control are all crucial for detecting genome-wide convergence. We believe this large study of mangroves is the first successful attempt at detecting genome-wide site convergence.

Taxonomic confusion of two tramp ant species： Iridomyrmex anceps and Ochetellus glaber are really species complexes

Many invasive invertebrates belong to unresolved species complexes, and have a history of misidentification and in-appropriate management. Here we detail confusion surrounding the taxonomy and identification of two dolichoderine ant species, Iridomyrmex anceps Roger and OcheteUus glaber Mayr, which are commonly cited in the literature as having been spread widely by human commerce. We provide morphometric data and images strongly suggesting that these two ＂species＂ are instead com- plexes of species that are likely native to many regions where they are purportedly introduced. We take particular interest in the status of species referred to as L anceps and O. glaber in China, as this is the most northerly distribution of both genera. We con-clude by suggesting that many identifications of both species are likely to be unreliable, and we recommend against any manage- ment action aimed at controlling these species under the assumption that they are exotic [Current Zoology 57 （5）： 662-667, 2011].

Allopatric speciation requiring an unbroken period of geographical isolation has been the standard model of neo-Darwinism. While doubts have been repeatedly raised, strict allopatry without any gene flow remains a plausible mechanism in most cases. To rigorously reject strict allopatry, genomic sequences superimposed on the geological records of a well-delineated geographical barrier are necessary. The Strait of Malacca,narrowly connecting the Pacific and Indian Ocean coasts, serves at different times either as a geographical barrier or a conduit of gene flow for coastal/marine species. We surveyed 1700 plants from 29 populations of 5 common mangrove species by large-scale DNA sequencing and added several whole-genome assemblies. Speciation between the two oceans is driven by cycles of isolation and gene flow due to the fluctuations in sea level leading to the opening/closing of the Strait to ocean currents. Because the time required for speciation in mangroves is longer than the isolation phases, speciation in these mangroves has proceeded through many cycles of mixing-isolation-mixing, or MIM, cycles. The MIM mechanism, by relaxing the condition of no gene flow, can promote speciation in many more geographical features than strict allopatry can. Finally, the MIM mechanism of speciation is also efficient, potentially yielding mn(m > 1) species after n cycles.

ANALYSIS OF CLIMATE VARIABILITY IN THE JINSHA RIVER VALLEY

Monthly mean surface air temperatures and precipitation at 20 meteorological stations in the Jinsha River Valley(JRV) of southwest China were analyzed for temporal-spatial variation patterns during the period *** magnitude of a trend was estimated using Sen's Nonparametric Estimator of Slope *** statistical significance of a trend was assessed by the MK *** results showed that mean annual air temperature has been increasing by 0.08℃/decade during the past 50 years as a *** climate change trend in air temperature was more significant in the winter(0.13℃/decade) than in the summer(0.03℃/decade).Annual precipitation tended to increase slightly thereafter and the increasing was mainly during the crop-growing *** the greatest variation of the annual mean temperature and annual precipitation were observed at the dry-hot valley area of middle *** warming rates were found in the upper reaches whereas the dry-hot basins of middle reaches experienced a cooling trend during the past *** of the overall increasing in precipitation,more obvious upward-trends were found in the dry-hot basins of middle reaches whereas the upper reaches had a drought trend during the past decades.

Soil respiration under three different land use types in a tropical mountain region of China

Soil respiration (SR) Wis one of the largest contributors of terrestrial CO_2 to the *** as well as physicochemical parameters influence SR and thus, different land use practices impact the emissions of soil CO_2. In this study, we measured SR, bi-monthly, over a one-year period in a terrace tea plantation, a forest tea plantation and a secondary forest, in a subtropical mountain area in Xishuangbanna, China. Along with the measurement of SR rates, soil characteristics for each of the land use systems were investigated. Soil respiration rates in the different land use systems did not differ significantly during the dry season, ranging from2.7±0.2 μmol m^(-2) s^(-1) to 2.8±0.2 μmol m^(-2) s^(-1). During the wet season, however, SR rates were significantly larger in the terrace tea plantation(5.4±0.5 μmol m^(-2)s^(-1)) and secondary forest(4.9±0.4 μmol m^(-2)s^(-1)) than in the forest tea plantation(3.7±0.2 μmol m^(-2) s^(-1)).This resulted in significantly larger annual soil CO_2 emissions from the terrace tea and secondary forest,than from the forest tea plantation. It is likely that these differences in the SR rates are due to the 0.5times lower soil organic carbon concentrations in thetop mineral soil in the forest tea plantation, compared to the terrace tea plantation and secondary ***, we suggest that the lower sensitivity to temperature variation in the forest tea soil is a result of the lower soil organic carbon concentrations. The higher SR rates in the terrace tea plantation were partly due to weeding events, which caused CO_2 emission peaks that contributed almost 10% to the annual CO_2 flux. Our findings suggest that moving away from heavily managed tea plantations towards low-input forest tea can reduce the soil CO_2 emissions from these systems. However, our study is a casestudy and further investigations and upscaling are necessary to show if these findings hold true at a landscape level.

Taxonomy on crane flies in family Tipulidae and Limoniidae(Diptera: Tipuloidea) from Yaoluoping National Nature Reserve, Anhui, China

The paper reports 13 species from Yaoluoping National Nature Reserve, Anhui, China, including a new species and a new subspecies, Tipula（Emodotipula） alexanderi Men, sp. nov. and Nephrotoma impigra anqingensis Men, subsp. nov. The female of Libnotes（Libnotes） pseudonohirai Men, 2015 is described and illustrated for the first time. The males of Holorusia henana Yang, 1999 and Tipula（Vestiplex） jiangi Yang ＆ Yang, 1991 are redescribed and illustrated with new morphological characters. A key to all species is provided.
