TRANSITION TOWARDS GREEN FACILITY MANAGEMENT: BRIDGING THE KNOWLEDGE GAPS OF FACILITIES MANAGERS

The building industry has experienced a widespread transition towards green buildings and consequently a growing need for green facilities professionals to maximize green building potential in terms of energy efficiency,water conservation and waste reduc-tion in their operational *** buildings have unique technological systems that require facility managers to have relevant knowledge and skills to conduct proper facilities management and maintenance planning to maximize the potential of green *** is important,then,to investigate whether knowledge gaps for facil-ity managers exist with respect to green buildings,and if so,how these knowledge gaps could be *** several studies have investigated the operation and maintenance processes of green buildings,few studies considered facility managers’knowledge and skills regarding green facility management(GFM).Set in the context of Singapore,this study aims to holistically investigate the knowledge and skills of managing green buildings in the community of facility managers,including their per-ceived differences between green and conventional buildings,the difficulty of GFM,the knowledge gaps of GFM and the underlying reasons,as well as how the gaps could be bridged.A total of 90 survey responses were collected and eight interviews with key stakeholders were conducted,which indicate facility managers believe green build-ings do have special features that require unique knowledge and skills,and currently knowledge gaps do exist hindering the transition towards ***,this paper derives plausible solutions to bridge the knowledge gaps,such as establishing holistic subsidies for those facility managers participating in training programs of *** study provides references for researchers and relevant governmental departments to better understand industry professionals’knowledge gaps in the transitioning process towards a green built environment,and to make better policy decisions bridging the

Owing to the adverse impact of the architecture,engineering and construction indus-try on the human and natural environment,the adoption of green building(GB)has been on the rise *** significant rise in the number of global research output on GB is a pointer to its *** this paper,a novel scientometric analysis of GB research in Africa is *** study aims to analyze and visualize GB research output in Africa from the millennium development goals(MDGs)era up to the present sustainable development goals(SDGs)era.A quantitative method(science mapping)was employed to analyze the 156 bibliometric records gathered from the Scopus *** analysis of the dataset reveals that significant contribu-tions to GB research in Africa originate from Egypt,South Africa,Nigeria,Algeria,Ghana,Morocco,Kenya,Mauritius,Ethiopia and *** research provides stakeholders in the built environment with the requisite knowledge and understand-ing of the trend and state of GB research in Africa,which will help in guiding poli-cymaking,research directions and intervention areas in every sector of the economy.

Floating forest:A novel breakwater-windbreak structure against wind and wave hazards

A novel floating breakwater-windbreak structure(floating forest)has been designed for the protection of vulnerable coastal areas from extreme wind and wave loadings during storm *** modular arch-shaped concrete structure is positioned perpendicularly to the direction of the prevailing wave and *** structure below the water surface acts as a porous breakwater with wave scattering *** array of tubular columns on the sloping deck of the breakwater act as an artificial forest-type windbreak.A feasibility study involving hydrodynamic and aerodynamic analyses has been performed,focusing on its capability in reducing wave heights and wind speeds in the lee *** study shows that the proposed 1 km long floating forest is able to shelter a lee area that stretches up to 600 m,with 40%–60%wave energy reduction and 10%–80%peak wind speed reduction.

The Mechanical and Electrical Properties of the Smart Aggregate Based on the Mixed Cementitious Materials

Cement and resin were designed as mixed cementitious materials to study the smart aggregate(SA)of smart *** fiber(CF)and surfactant were taken into consideration to adjust the mechanical and electrical properties of smart aggregate(SA)in this *** experimental results indicate that the flexibility and mechanical properties of SA can be improved by using such mixed cementitious *** is shows that,although the compressive strength and flexural strength can be enhanced effectively by using resin and CF,the electrical conductivity decreases significantly,which is because the water molecules are difficult to penetrate through the mixture materials so the hydration reaction of cement can not fully carry ***,the electrical conductivity can be improved by adding the surfactant,and the strength and mechanical electrical properties can be adjusted effectively by the surfactant.

Vegetable Production After Flooded Rice Improves Soil Properties in the Red River Delta, Vietnam

Vegetable production in South East Asia often is in rotation with flooded rice. The puddling of the soil with flooded rice production may result in unfavourable soil conditions for the subsequent production of dry land crops. To establish whether permanent vegetable production results in favourable soil conditions for vegetables, the effects of five different permanent vegetable production systems and a system of vegetable production in rotation with flooded rice on soil properties after flooded rice were studied in a 2-year field experiment. Bulk density at 0.05–0.10 m depth layer decreased with permanent vegetable production and vegetable production in rotation with flooded rice. The decrease in bulk density was influenced by the application of organic manure and rice husks, and especially by the number of crops cultivated, suggesting that frequency of soil tillage had a major effect on bulk density. Ploughing with buffalo traction after flooded rice, in combination with construction of raised beds, could reduce or totally eliminate negative effects of puddling on soil structure. Bulk density at 0.15–0.20 m soil depth was not influenced. Soil acidity decreased significantly in all systems. Soil organic carbon increased in all systems, but significant increase was only found in two permanent vegetable production systems. Available phosphorus(P) significantly increased in two permanent vegetable production systems, with a positively correlation to the amount of P applied. The significant decrease in bulk density and increase in p H(H2O), after only 2 years, showed that soil conditions after flooded rice could be improved in a short time under intensive vegetable production.

Bacteriological challenges to asbestos cement water distribution pipelines

Asbestos cement （AC） pipes were commonly installed in the drinking water distribution systems from the mid 1920s to the late 1980s. In recent years, an increase in the number of water main breaks has occurred in the AC portions of some pipe networks, which can be partially attributed to the corrosion of the aged pipes. This study evaluated the potential role that microorganisms may have played in the degeneration and failure of AC pipes. In this study, a fresh AC pipe section was collected from the distribution network of the City of Regina, Canada and examined for microbiological activities and growth on inside surfaces of pipe sample. Black slime bacterial growths were found to be attached to inner pipe surfaces and a distinctively fibrous internal coating （patina） with iron oxides was formed over the time. The microbial populations inside the patina and the black slime were tested with BART^TM testers. Heterotrophic aerobic bacteria （HAB） and slime forming bacteria （SLYM） dominated in both the black growths and inside the patina. Iron related bacteria, denitrification bacteria and sulfate reducing bacteria were also commonly present. Microbial challenge assays were conducted by submerging the cut segments of the AC pipe into selected bacterial cultures for a period of 10 days under both aerobic and anaerobic environments. Weight changes were determined and the surface morphology was examined for each of the assayed pipe segments. Results indicated that acid producing bacteria, SLYM and HAB could facilitate the pipe weight loss under anaerobic environments.

As China’s population ages and the notion of contemporary people evolves,an increasing number of elderly people opt to spend their final years in a nursing ***,there have been more fires in nursing facilities for the *** a result,using computer simulation technology,this paper creates an evacuation micro-simulation model for the elderly and nursing staff,investigates the impact of psychological characteristics and evacuation behavior of the elderly and nursing staffon fire escape during the fire evacuation process,and designs fire evacuation for nursing *** on the nursing home’s regular evacuation paradigm,the study examines the behavioral *** simulate the three models and the influence of various behavioral and psychological features on fire evacuation,the authors utilized the MATLAB software,which is based on Agent theory and cellular *** simulation results show that the three models proposed in this study are capable of accurately describing reality.

Amplitude-squared squeezing of superposition of coherent states

This paper discusses the amplitude-squared squeezing for the superposition of two coherent states with their phase differences being separately π/2, 3π/2, and π1, as well as for the superposition state of two pseudoclassical states. According to the analysis, it is found that the superposition state of two coherent states with their phase differences π/2 and 3π/2, and the superposition state of two pseudoclassical states both do exhibit the amplitude-squared squeezing. Also, some specific states are found to exhibit even stronger squeezing effects when relative phase of the superposition is equal to the average photon number. Amplitude-squared squeezing is dependent on the difference in phase between two coherent states.

Basic Physical Characteristics of the Water-permeable Brick with Composite Structure

The resin-sand mixture was proposed to be used as the surface course,and cement permeable concrete was used as the base course;such two kinds of materials were combined to prepare water-permeable brick with a composite *** compressive strength,flexural strength,and permeability were studied by using adjusting the contents of carbon fiber,quartz powder,cement,sand,and *** study shows that the hydrophilicity of the resin-sand mixture can be improved after any amount of resin is replaced by quartz powder;by using the surfactant,the interface energy of the particles can be reduced so that the water permeability of the surface course can be promoted ***,the mechanical properties of the surface course were negatively affected by the *** the optimal process consideration in the experiments,the properties about compressive strength,flexural strength,and permeability of the composite permeable brick can meet the requirements of the specifications of resin-sand based water permeable brick JGT 376-2012(compressive strength was higher than 35 MPa,the flexural strength exceeded 5.19 MPa,and the average permeability coefficient was higher than 2.3×10^(-2)cm/s).There are no obvious pores on the surface course and only water molecules can pass through it,therefore,the surface of the permeable brick cannot be blocked up by solid substances,and the permeability of such permeable brick can be improved effectively in this way.

Effect of conspecific and heterospecific urine odors on the foraging behavior of the golden spiny mouse

The common spiny mouse(Acomys cahirinus)inhibits the foraging activity of the golden spiny mouse(***).These two sympatric species of spiny mice,which are considered habitat competitors,occur in extreme arid *** test this theory of competition,the influence of urinary odors of both conspecific and heterospecific mice on the foraging behavior of *** was studied under controlled laboratory *** adult males,born in captivity and unfamiliar to the odors of the donor mice,were tested in 3 experimental conditions choosing between 2 seed patches that were scented with urine of either heterospecifics(***),conspecifics(***)or controls(odors of the tested individual).Of the 20 males,12 were also tested with urine of unfamiliar gerbils,bushy-tailed jird,considered as competitors in the *** conspecific and heterospecific urine samples from Acomys significantly reduced foraging behavior of *** when compared to the control *** inhibitory effect of the Acomys urine does not result from the novelty of chemical stimuli of the urine because no effect was shown with unfamiliar gerbil *** findings are in accordance with the general theory that *** dominates the foraging activity of *** hypothesize that chemical cues in the urine of Acomys *** induce a negative effect on the foraging behavior of ***.
