One possible hypothesis for the function of post-fledging dispersal is to locate a suitable future breeding area.This post-fledging period may be particularly important in migratory species because they have a limited period to gather information prior to autumn migration,and in protandrous species,males must quickly acquire a territory after returning from spring migration to maximize their fitness.Here we use color-ring resightings to investigate how the post-fledging dispersal movements of the Cyprus wheatear Oenanthe cypriaca,a small migratory passerine,relate to their first breeding territory the following year when they return from migration.We found that males established first breeding territories that were significantly closer to their post-fledging location than to their natal sites or to post-fledging locations of other conspecifics,but these patterns were not apparent in females.Our findings suggest that familiarity with potential breeding sites may be important for juveniles of migratory species,particularly for the sex that acquires and advertises breeding territories.Exploratory dispersal prior to a migrant’s first autumn migration may contribute toward its breeding success the following year,further highlighting the importance of early seasonal breeding on fitness and population dynamics more generally.

The present paper provides a checklist of reported species from genera Ascobolus Pers.and Saccobolus Boud.in India with one additional first record from India,Saccobolus depauperatus.In addition,A.brassicae,A.furfuraceus,A.foliicola,A.saccharifereus,Saccobolus depauperatus and S.glaber are reported for the first time from Kashmir,India and descriptions and photomicroplates of all said species are provided for their easy identification.

During the ongoing investigation of bambusicolous ascomycetous fungi in Yunnan,China,24 specimens belonging to the family Roussoellaceae were collected and identified based on morphological features and phylogenetic support.Maximum-likelihood(ML) analyses and Bayesian analyses were generated based on the combined data set of ITS,LSU,tef1,and rpb2loci.The phylogenetic analyses revealed four novel lineages in Roussoella s.str.;thus,we introduced four new species viz.,Roussoella multiloculate sp.nov.,R.papillate sp.nov.,R.sinensis sp.nov.,and R.uniloculata sp.nov.Their morphological characters were compared with the known Roussoella taxa,which lack sequence data in the GenBank.Asexual morphs of R.kunmingensis and R.padinae were recorded from dead bamboo culms in China(from the natural substrates) for the first time.Neoroussoella bambusae,Roussoella japanensis,R.nitidula,R.padinae,R.scabrispora,and R.tuberculate were also reported as the first records from China.All new taxa are described and illustrated in detail.Plates are provided for new reports.

IN May 2022,at phase two of the UN Biodiversity Conference in Kunming,the 196 parties to the Convention on biological diversity are expected to adopt a robust,ambitious,and inclusive post-2020 global biodiversity framework.The framework will provide a strategic vision and a global roadmap for the conservation,protection,restoration,and sustainable management of biodiversity and ecosystems.Draft One of the framework,released in July,recognizes that urgent policy action globally,regionally,and nationally is required to transform economic,social,and financial models so the trends that have exacerbated biodiversity loss will stabilize by 2030 and allow for the recovery of natural ecosystems,with net improvements by 2050.

This article compliments the S18 session( transmission of traditional ecological knowledge and conservation of medicinal plants) at the 13th International Congress of Ethnobiology( ISE) in Montpellier,France( May2012). The aim of the article is to provide an insight into the livelihoods of a Berber community,a village of the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco,of the local biodiversity and most importantly,the prevalent use of medicinal plants for primary health care. It seeks to demonstrate the value of traditional ecological and herbal knowledge for the subsistence of the community and emphasises the vital role that family and community connections play for the transmission of traditional herbal knowledge within the community.

Epitypification can solve many taxonomic problems and stabilize the understanding of species, genera, families or orders. The aim of this paper is to illustrate how to epitypify. A few examples where taxa have been epitypified are considered and the benefits and disadvantages of epitypification are discussed. We also outline some examples of taxa which need to be epitypi-fied with reasons.

Crete with its complex geomorphological history is the island with the highest number of endemism observed in animal and plant taxa throughout the Aegean archipelago.While other groups of organisms within Crete are well-studied,the freshwater gastropod fauna still remains poorly investigated.Bythinella and Pseudamnicola,are 2 genera of freshwater springsnails,both present on the island,inhabiting springs and other freshwater habitats.Here,we conduct a comprehensive study on the distribution of the different genetic lineages of the 2 gastropod genera in order to assess the mode of their differentiation on the island and infer the actual number of species present in the island.Towards these aims,sequence data from the mitochondrial gene were used and analyzed within a phylogenetic framework.For Bythinella,our results strongly support at least 5 delineated Bythinella spp.inhabiting Crete,which correspond to the already described species from previous studies with the addition of a new one.Bythinella analyses reveal an old time-frame of differentiation with vicariant phenomena being more likely the main drivers shaping the present-day distribution of the genus’genetic lineages.For Pseudamnicola,our data indicate the presence of at least 2 delineated Pseudamnicola spp.with a differentiation more consistent to an isolation-by-distance pattern of a relatively recent origin.Dispersion processes followed by isolation of the populations and/or recent speciation,seem to be the underlying process for the current distribution of Pseudamnicola lineages.

Distribution of Chironomidae (Insecta: Diptera) in polluted rivers of the Juru River Basin, Penang, Malaysia

The influence of physical and chemical parameters on the abundance and diversity of chironomids was studied in six rivers with moderate to highly polluted water in the Juru River Basin. The rivers: Ceruk Tok Kun (CTKR) as reference site, and polluted rivers of Pasir (PR), Juru (JR), Permatang Rawa (PRR), Ara (AR) and Kilang Ubi (KUR) were sampled over a period of five months (November 2007-March 2008). Nine chirnomid species: Chironimus kiiensis, C. javanus, Polypedilum trigonus, Microchironomus sp., Dicrotendipes sp., Tanytarsus formosanus, Clinotanypus sp., Tanypus punctipennis and Fittkauimyia sp. were identified. Assessment of their relationships with several environmental parameters was performed using the canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). Tanytarsus formosanus was the most dominant in the relatively clean CTKR and moderately polluted JR with mean densities of 19.66 and 25.32 m 2 , respectively while C. kiiensis was abundant in more polluted rivers. Tanytarsus formosanus, Dicrotendipes sp. and Microchironomus sp. were grouped under moderate to high water temperature, total organic matter (TOM), total suspended solids (TSS), velocity, pH, phosphates and sulphates. However, Tanypus punctipennis, Fittkauimyia sp., and Clinotanypus sp. were associated with high contents of river sediment such as TOM, Zn and Mn and water ammonium-N and nitrate-N and they were associated with higher dissolved oxygen (DO) content in the water. Chironomus kiiensis, C. javanus and P. trigonus showed positive relationships with TOM, ammonium-N and nitrate-N as well as trace metals of Zn, Cu and Mn. These three species could be considered as tolerant species since they have the ability to survive in extreme environmental conditions with low DO and high concentrations of pollutants. Based on the water parameter scores in all rivers, the highest diversity of chironomid larvae was reported in CTKR. The highly speciose gekkonid genus Cnemaspis Strauch,1887 is polyphyletic,with three distantly related and geographically isolated clades from Africa,South Asia(SA),and Southeast Asia.At present,there are 85 known species within SA Cnemaspis,although the number continues to increase rapidly with focused surveys and rigorous taxonomic work.Recent studies have provided valuable insights into the diversity and evolutionary history of SA Cnemaspis;however,most of these studies lack sufficient sampling in the Western Ghats(WG),where the genus has its greatest diversity.We addressed this research gap by conducting extensive sampling across the WG and re-examining museum specimens,thus providing a systematic account of various extant Cnemaspis species along with their distribution and natural history.We described 12 new species and a southern WG endemic clade of SA Cnemaspis.Ten of the newly described species are endemic to the forests of the southern WG.We also identified 10 well-supported subclades that can be separated across morphological,geographic,and phylogenetic axes.A time-calibrated phylogeny and ancestral area reconstructions confirmed the Paleocene origin of SA Cnemaspis in the WG and provide insights into its evolutionary history and biogeography.The discovery of multiple endemic and deeply divergent lineages further highlights the evolutionary significance of the WG for lizards.
