High arsenic(As)and chromium(Cr)concentrations are currently receiving attention because of their negative effects on the environment and human *** inhabiting contaminated environments have developed resistance mechanisms against the toxicity of these ***,members of the bacterial genus Micrococcus have been isolated from different toxic metal-contaminated environments;however,knowledge concerning its resistance mechanisms to As and Cr toxicity remains *** luteus strains(An24,Mh,NE2TL6,and NE2TTS4)were isolated from the endosphere and soil of two heavy metal-contaminated sites in Mexico to identify differences in the resistance mechanisms by the *** *** strains were resistant to As(As^(3+)and As^(5+)),chromate,dichromate,cobalt,copper,nickel,and *** analysis indicated that the heavy metal-resistant strains(An24,Mh,NE2TL6,and NE2TTS4)could be assigned to the *** group and had more heavy metal-resistant genes(transporters,chaperones,and enzymes)compared to reference strains of the *** group,*** NCTC 2665^(T)and Micrococcus endophyticus JCM 16951^(T).The resistant bacteria were able to biotransform As^(3+)and As^(5+)through a carbon source-dependent *** biotransformation of As5+was potentially carried out in the cytoplasm through a thioredoxin-dependent pathway,which may be coupled with biosorption.A qualitative analysis of organic acids(OAs)identified a change in the OA profile of the metal-resistant strains that was As-or *** genomic and phenotypic findings suggest that the four *** group strains evaluated in the current study have developed resistance mechanisms that may enable their survival in contaminated sites.

The impact of earlier flood recession on metacommunity diversity of wintering waterbirds at shallow lakes in the middle and lower Yangtze River floodplain

The hydrological regime in wetlands plays an important role in the process of wintering waterbird metacommunity ***,increasing frequency of extreme climate and the intensification of human activities,such as the construction of sluices and dams,have resulted in frequently abnormal hydrological regime in the middle and lower Yangtze River *** recent years,earlier flood recession has become one of the main hydrological problems faced in the shallow lakes,having a great impact on wetland *** is necessary to understand the impact of earlier flood recession on waterbirds,an indicator of wetland biodiversity,and the metacommunity concept is helpful to elucidate the underlying mechanism involved in the processes of assemblage by waterbird *** this study,we surveyed the wintering waterbirds at three sub-lakes of Caizi Lakes during 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 and compared the richness,abundance,alpha and beta diversity of waterbirds in and among local metacommunities under earlier flood recession and normal hydrological *** results showed that the earlier flood recession reduced the species richness in the early stage and abundance in the late stage,it also reduced the Shannon-Wiener index in the early stage and increased the dissimilarity between and within waterbird metacommunities in the late *** partition of beta diversity showed that the turnover component played a major role in the process of waterbird metacommunity *** was found that the earlier flood recession reduced the richness,abundance in different stages of flood recession,which also increased the turnover of *** with high habitat heterogeneity had better resistance to abnormal hydrological regime,which resulted in high dissimilarity between and within *** results of this study provide important information for waterbird conservation and water level management at shallow lakes in the middle and lower Yangtz

Effects of warming and fertilization interacting with intraspecific competition on fine root traits of Picea asperata

Aims Competition,temperature and nutrient are the most important determinants of tree growth in the cold climate on the eastern Tibetan *** many studies have reported their individual effects on tree growth,little is known about how the interactions of competition with fertilization and temperature affect root *** aim to test whether climate warming and fertilization promote competition and to explore the functional strategies of Picea asperata in response to the interactions of these *** We conducted a paired experiment including competition and non-competition treatments under elevated temperature(ET)and *** measured root traits,including the root tip number over the root surface(RTRS),the root branching events over the root surface(RBRS),the specific root length(SRL),the specific root area(SRA),the total fine root length and area(RL and RA),the root tips(RTs)and root branching(RB)*** root traits are considered to be indicators of plant resource uptake capacity and root *** root biomass and the nutrient concentrations in the roots were also *** Findings The results indicated that ET,fertilization and competition individually enhanced the nitrogen(N)and potassium(K)concentrations in fine roots,but they did not affect fine root biomass or root traits,including RL,RT,RA and ***,both temperature and fertilizationz as well as their interaction,interacting with competition increased RL,RA,RT,RB and nutrient *** addition,the SRL,SRA,RTRS and RBRS decreased un der fertilization,the interaction between temperature and competition decreased SRL and SRA,while the other parameters were not affected by temperature or *** results indicate that *** maintains a conservative nutrient strategy in response to competition,climate warming,fertilization and their *** results improve our understanding of the physiological and ecological adaptability of trees to glo

Phlomoides,with 150-170 species,is the second largest and perhaps most taxonomically challenging genus within the subfamily Lamioideae(Lamiaceae).With about 60 species,China is one of three major biodiversity centers of *** some Phlomoides species from China have been included in previous molecular phylogenetic studies,a robust and broad phylogeny of this lineage has yet to be ***,given the myriad new additions to the genus,the existing infrageneric classification needs to be evaluated and ***,we combine molecular and morphological data to investigate relationships within Phlomoides,with a focus on Chinese *** observed that plastid DNA sequences can resolve relationships within Phlomoides better than nuclear ribosomal internal and external transcribed spacer regions(nrITS and nrETS).Molecular phylogenetic analyses confirm the monophyly of Phlomoides,but most previously defined infrageneric groups are not *** addition,morphological analysis demonstrates the significant taxonomic value of eight characters to the *** on our molecular phylogenetic analyses and morphological data,we establish a novel section Notochaete within Phlomoides,and propose three new combinations as well as three new *** study presents the first molecular phylogenetic analyses of Phlomoides in which taxa representative of the entire genus are included,and highlights the phylogenetic and taxonomic value of several morphological characters from species of Phlomoides from *** study suggests that a taxonomic revision and reclassification for the entire genus is necessary in the future.

Considerable impacts of litter inputs on soil nematode community composition in a young Acacia crassicapa plantation

Aboveground litter inputs and root exudates provide basal resources for soil communities,however,their relative contributions to soil food web are still not well ***,we conducted a field manipulative experiment to differentiate the effects of litter inputs and living root on nematode community composition of surface and subsoils in a young Acacia crassicapa plantation in southern *** results showed that both litter addition and root presence significantly enhanced soil nematode abundance by 17.3%and 35.3%,*** addition altered nematode trophic group composition,decreased fungivore to bacterivore ratio,and enhanced maturity index and structure index,which led to a bacterial-based energy channel and a more complex food web ***,root presence had a limited impact on the nematode community composition and ecological *** nematodes surface assembly,soil depth did not affect nematode trophic group composition or ecological *** findings highlight the importance of litter inputs in shaping soil nematode community structure and regulating soil energy channel.

Iron-bound organic carbon dynamics in peatland profiles:The preservation equivalence of deep and surface soil

More than half of the carbon pools in peatlands are stored in the soil layers below 30 cm,yet little is known about the carbon stabilizing factors at these *** iron oxide minerals are considered to be important for stabilizing organic carbon(OC),their role in the preservation of OC in peatlands,especially in the deep layers,is poorly ***,we collected 1 m soil profiles from six peatlands in Central and West China to quantitatively study the vertical distribution characteristics of iron-bound OC(Fe-bound OC),and the influencing physicochemical properties of the *** results showed that the content of reactive iron(FeR)was enriched in the top layer and decreased gradually with *** Fe-bound OC was positively correlated with FeR,its concentration did not decrease with depth in the peat *** were no obvious trends in the distributions of FeR and Fe-bound OC with water level fluctuations in the peat *** addition,the proportion of Fe-bound OC to soil organic carbon in the deep peat(31 to 100 cm)was equivalent to that in the surface peat(0 to 30 cm),indicating that iron oxide mineral provides comparable protection of OC in both *** to upper estimates of global peatland carbon storage(612 Pg),it could be predicted that 23.81±11.75 Pg of OC is protected by association with *** results indicated that iron oxide minerals are the effective"rusty sink"of OC sequestration in peatland,and a key factor for its long-term *** results from this study make a valuable contribution to the carbon dynamics knowledgebase for peatlands,and provide a basis for improved predictive simulations.

Invasive species are a major threat to island biodiversity,and their eradications have substantially contributed to the conservation of island ***,the consequences of eradications on the trophic ecology of native taxa are largely ***,we used the eradication of invasive black rats Rattus rattus and European rabbits Oryctolagus cuniculus from the Berlenga Island,in the western coast of Portugal,as a whole-ecosystem experiment to investigate the effects of the eradication of invasive mammals on the trophic niche and body dimensions of the island-restricted Berlenga wall lizard Podarcis carbonelli berlengensis over a 2-year *** results suggest an expansion of the isotopic niche and an intensification of the sexual dimorphism of the lizard following mammal ***,we found considerable variability in isotopic niche across the island and detected evidence of sex-specific and season-modulated nutritional requirements of this threatened *** findings support that the eradication of 2 of the planets most problematic invasive vertebrates led to changes in the lizard trophic niche and sexual dimorphism in just 2 *** suggests that the ecological pressuresfor example,prey availability and habitat structureto which lizards are exposed have substantially changed *** study emphasizes the scientific value of island eradications as experiments to address a wide range of ecological questions and adds to the increasing body of evidence supporting substantial conservation gains associated with these restoration interventions.
