Atmospheric rivers(ARs)are an important component of the hydrological cycle linking moisture sources in lower latitudes to the Antarctic surface mass *** investigate AR signatures in the atmospheric vertical profiles at the Dronning Maud Land coast,East Antarctica,using regular and extra radiosonde measurements conducted during the Year of Polar Prediction Special Observing Period November 2018 to February *** AR events affecting the locations of Neumayer and Syowa cause a strong increase in specific humidity extending through the mid-troposphere and a strong low-level jet(LLJ).At Neumayer,the peak in the moisture inversion(up to 4 g kg^?1)is observed between 800 and 900 hPa,while the LLJ(up to 32 m s^?1)is concentrated below 900 *** Syowa the increase in humidity is less pronounced and peaks near the surface,while there is a substantial increase in wind speed(up to 40 m s?1)between 825 and 925 *** transport(MT)within the vertical profile during the ARs attains a maximum of 100 g kg?1 m s?1 at both locations,and is captured by both ERA-Interim and ERA5 reanalysis data at Neumayer,but is strongly underestimated at *** of the enhanced MT events during 2009?19 show that these events represent an extreme state of the lower-tropospheric profile compared to its median values with respect to temperature,humidity,wind speed and,consequently,*** temporal-and vertical-resolution radiosonde observations are important for understanding the contribution of these rare events to the total MT towards Antarctica and improving their representation in models.

This study predicts favorable oil and gas source-rock formation conditions in the Aryskum Depression of the South Turgay Basin,*** study assesses the thermal maturity and characteristics of organic matter by determining its environmental conditions using data from geochemical analysis of core(pyrolysis)and oil(biomarkers and carbon isotopic compositions)*** to the geochemical parameters obtained by pyrolysis,the oil generation potential of the original rocks of most studied samples varies from poor to *** facies–genetic organic matter is predominantly humic and less frequently humus–sapropel,indicating organic matter accumulation in the studied samples were under moderately reducing conditions(kerogenⅢand Ⅱ types)and coastal–marine environments(kerogen typeⅠ).The carbon isotopic compositions of oils derived from the Jurassic deposits of the Aryskum Depression also indicate the sapropelic and mixed humic–sapropelic type of organic matter(kerogenⅡandⅠ).Biomarker analysis of oils indicates original organic matter formation in an anoxic environment.

Optimization of enrichment and pretreatment of low-activity radium isotopes in the open ocean

In the open ocean,radium isotopes are useful tracers of residence time and water-mass ***,limited by the measurement resolution of commonly used gamma counters,the low activity of radium in the open ocean makes it necessary to enrich radium from large volumes of seawater and pretreat radium-enriched carriers prior to *** commonly applied method of radium enrichment and pretreatment,however,has limitations of uneven coating of MnO_(2)on cartridges,relatively expensive cartridges,time-consuming issues during cartridge-ashing,ash loss during transfer,and changes of gamma counters efficiency caused by different ash *** address these issues,in this study we optimized the enrichment and pretreatment of low-activity radium prior to ***,we replaced commonly used acrylic cartridges with cheaper polypropylene cartridges,which took 6 h to be ashed,42 h shorter than for acrylic ***,MnO_(2)-coated cartridges were prepared with a circulating hot acidic KMnO_(4)solution to ensure homogeneous *** radium extraction efficiency of this MnO_(2)-coated cartridge was 20%-61%higher than that prepared by directly immersing cartridges in the *** radium delayed coincidence counter efficiency for MnO_(2)-coated cartridge was stable with a moisture content of ***,after ashing cartridges,instead of directly transferring the ash to a measurement vial,a mixture of hydroxylamine hydrochloride and hydrochloric acid was used to completely leach the ash for long-lived radium,followed by coprecipitation by BaSO_(4),to avoid potential loss of ash during transfer and variations in measurement geometry due to different ash *** the recovery of long-lived radium pretreatment was 94%-102%,which improved by 11%compared with the common *** addition,the radium extraction efficiency of the MnO_(2)-coated cartridge varied from 3%to 4%within the in situ pump working flow rate of 4-7 L/min,which fell within the

Grain size characteristics of surface sediment and its response to the dynamic sedimentary environment in Qiantang Estuary, China

The composition and grain size characteristics of sediment in estuarine and coastal environments provide important information on the material source, hydrodynamic environment, environmental events,etc. However, few studies have focused on the sediment characteristics of the entire Qiantang Estuary,particularly, on the correlation between hydrodynamics and sediment properties. Through systematic sampling of the surface sediment in a large area of the Qiantang Estuary, the spatial distribution characteristics of the surface sediment of the Qiantang Estuary, such as the grain size composition and particle size parameters, in different sections of the estuary area are analyzed. By comparing the particle size data of different estuaries, the similarities and differences of the particle size parameters of the Qiantang Estuary and other estuaries are compared and analyzed. According to the differences in the sediment composition, the distribution status of the particle size frequency curves and the morphological characteristics of the probability curves in the entire study area, the Qiantang Estuary is divided into 7 dynamic depositional areas: Fuchunjiang Hydropower Station-Fuyang, Fuyang-Qibao, Qibao-Cao’e River, Cao’e River-Zhapu, North Shore of Hangzhou Bay, middle part of Hangzhou Bay, and South Shore of Hangzhou Bay, which are different from the previous estuary segmentation system. The study area is divided into 13 dynamic depositional sub-regions using the Pejrup M triangle diagram. Combining the calculation results of the mathematical model and the Pejrup M triangle diagram, the relation between the dynamic deposition environment and the bottom shear stress is discussed. It is found that the spatial distribution of the bottom shear stress in the study area is in good agreement with the zoning of the dynamic sedimentary environment.

Hydrographical parameters and phytoplankton assemblages along the Pondicherry—Nagapattinam coastal waters,southeast coast of India

Hydrographical parameters and phytoplankton assemblages were determined along the Pondicherry, Parangipettai and Nagapattinam coastal waters, southeast coast of India. All the hydrographical parameters such as sea surface temperature, salinity, p H, total alkalinity, dissolved oxygen and nutrients like nitrate, nitrite, inorganic phosphate and reactive silicate, chlorophyll a and phytoplankton assemblages were studied for a period of five months(May, August, September 2010, March and November 2011). Over 121 species of phytoplankton represented by 93 species of diatoms, 16 species of dinoflagellates, 9 species of blue-green algae, 2 species of greens and 1 species of silicoflagellate were recorded. High phytoplankton species diversity was found in March 2011 when salinity and nitrate concentrations were low and reactive silicate and inorganic phosphates were moderate. Species diversity was low during May 2010 when increased sea surface temperature, salinity and low nutrients availability were observed. Coscinodiscus centralis, Diatoma vulgaris and Proboscia alata were dominant, especially Coscinodiscus sp. distributed in all stations whereas Skeletonema costatum, Odontella sinensis and Ditylum brightwellii were abundant in August and September 2010. From principal component analysis and multiple regression analysis, it is evident that variables like sea surface temperature and dissolved oxygen are the most important factors influencing the seasonal pattern of phytoplankton population.

Native and exotic seed dispersal by the stone marten(Martes foina):implications for the regeneration of a relict climactic forest in central Portugal

The stone marten(Martes foina)is a carnivorous mammal that often consumes fleshy fruits,thus potentially promoting seed *** present study was developed in Bussaco National Forest,central Portugal,and aimed to assess the potential role of the stone marten in dispersing native and exotic plants in different forest landscape *** from stone marten scats and fleshy fruits were collected monthly and were thereafter identified and sowed in a nursery,following a randomized experimental *** emergence was monitored *** linear models were used to test for differences in time and success of emergence between seeds from scats and fruits of 3 native species(Rubus ulmifolius,Arbutus unedo and Celtis australis)and 1 exotic plant species with invasive behavior(Prunus laurocerasus).Fruit consumption by the stone martens significantly increased and accelerated the germination of the native *** but had no effect on the other 2 native species or on the invasive *** suggested that stone martens contribute to gene flow and forest regeneration by dispersing native plant ***,although the germination was not enhanced in the invasive species,the preference of stone martens for these fruits may potentially contribute to the proliferation of *** study represents a contribution to better understanding the fauna and flora interactions,enabling for a more conscious and effective decision-making in forest management.

Seasonal effects of impervious surface estimation in subtropical monsoon regions

Accurate impervious surface estimation(ISE)is challenging due to the diversity of land covers and the vegetation phenology and *** study investigates the variation of impervious surfaces estimated from different seasons of satellite images and the seasonal sensitivity of different *** Landsat ETM?images of four different seasons and two popular methods(*** neural network(ANN)and support vector machine(SVM))are employed to estimate the impervious surface on the pixel *** indicate that winter(dry season)is the best season to estimate impervious surface even though plants are not in their growing *** cloud and less variable source areas(VSA)(seasonal water body)become the major advantages of winter for the ISE,as cloud is easily confusedwith bright impervious surfaces,andwater in VSA is confusedwith dark impervious surfaces due to their similar spectral *** the seasonal sensitivity of methods,ANN appears more stable as its accuracy varied less than that obtained with ***,both the methods showed a general consistency of the seasonal changes of the accuracy,indicating that winter time is the best season for impervious surfaces estimation with optical satellite images in subtropical monsoon regions.

Biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles by using mangrove plant extract and their potential mosquito larvicidal property

Objective:To identify the larvicidal activities of silver nano particles synthesised with Rhizophora mucronata（***） leaf extract against the larvae of Aedes aegypti（***） and Culex quinquefasciatus（***）.Methods:In vitro larvicidal activities such as LC50 and LC90 were assessed for the *** and *** larval ***, characterisation such as UV,XRD,FTIR and AFM analysis were carried out for the synthesised silver nano ***:The LC50 value of the synthesised silver nano particle was identified as 0.585 and 0.891 mgg/L for *** and *** larvae respectively. Further,the LG90 values are also identified as 2.615 and 6.291 mg/L for *** and Cx. quinquefasciatus species *** synthesised silver nanoparticles have maximum absorption at 420 nm with the average size of 60-95 *** XRD data showed 20 intense values with various degrees such as 37.10°,47.66°,63.97°and 70.01°.The FTIR data showed prominent peaks in（3 426.89,2 925.49,2 869.56,2 346.95,1 631.49,1 031.73,669.18 and 455.12） different ***:The biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles with leaf aqueous extract of R. mucronata provides potential source for the larvicidal activity against mosquito borne diseases.

Shoreline management plan for a protected but eroding coast along the southwest coast of India

coastal erosion is a serious problem of concern along the southwest(SW) coast of India. Various coastal protection measures have been applied for the recovery of the coast, but the devastating effect of erosion still continues. The present study focuses on a coastal stretch situated on the southern sector of the SW coast of India, where Sundar and Sannasiraj(2006) proposed a groyne field along with an existing seawall to control severe erosion. In order to confirm the net littoral drift of this region and for a preliminary assessment of the performance of the groynes prior to construction of the proposed groyne field, two groynes were initially constructed as a pilot program in 2008-09. Periodic monitoring of shoreline position with the two groynes in place was carried out during 2009-14. A shoreline evolution model for the study region was setup, calibrated,and validated using field observations during 2010-11. In addition to traditional shoreline evolution modelling procedures, a profile simulation model was applied for simulating the shoreline behaviour during extreme monsoon seasons. The validated LITPACK model has been used to evaluate the performance of the proposed groyne field in controlling erosion, and the study also considered testing a modified transitional groyne field proposed as an alternative solution to the existing problem, and the modified transitional groyne field was found to be more effective than the prior design. A beach is expected to develop about 30-50 m within the groyne cells during the fair season which enhances the possibility of retaining a minimum beach width of 10 m during monsoon periods.
