The microstructure and melting properties of ternary Ag-Cu-In intermediate-temperature alloys （400-600 ℃） prepared by electric arc melting were investigated in this work. The melting properties, phase compositions, microstructure and hardness were charac- terized by differential scanning calorimetry （DSC）, X-ray diffraction （XRD）, scanning electron microscopy （SEM） and micro-hardness tester, respectively. The results show that the melting properties, phase compositions, microstructure and hardness of Ag-Cu-In brazing alloys are substantially different when adding different levels of indium. Indium element could effectively reduce the melting temperatures of （Ag-Cu28）-xIn alloys, and the melting temperatures of （Ag-Cu28）-25In alloy are located at 497.86 and 617.48 ℃. When the indium content varies from 5 wt% and 10 wt%, the dominant phases in the alloys are Ag-rich and Cu-rich phases, and their granular crystals are smaller than 0.5 ktm. When the indium content is higher than 15 wt%, the phase compositions of the alloy are Ag4In and Cu11In9, and the microstructure exhibits dendritic crystals with a uniform distribution. The hardness of （Ag- Cu28）-xIn alloy decreases first and then increases with the content of indium increasing, and the highest hardness of （Ag-Cu28）-25In alloy is HV 266.0.

This paper details some significant findings on the use of the fiber Bragg grating （FBG） sensors for structural health monitoring （SHM） in aerospace fiber reinforced polymer （FRP） structures. A diminutive sensor provides a capability of imbedding inside FRP structures to monitor vital locations of damage. Some practical problems associated with the implementation of FBG based SHM systems in the aerospace FRP structures such as the difficulty of embedding FBG sensors during the manufacturing process and interrelation of distortion to FBG spectra due to internal damage, and other independent effects will be thoroughly studied. An innovative method to interpret FBG signals for identifying damage inside the structures will also be discussed.

Measurements of Heat Treatment Effects on Bovine Cortical Bones by Nanoindentation and Compression Testing

Heat treatment of bone is one of the reliable and simple sterilization methods to overcome the risk of rejection and disease transfer from allograft and xenograft, in particular for the prevention of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. However, the mechanical property of the micro-structural level after heat treatment is not well characterized. To address this issue, this study was carried out to compare the localized mechanical properties of micro-structural tissue with those at the global structural level. Nanoindentation technique has been well accepted as an accurate technique to measure mechanical property of small and heterogeneous specimen nondestructively, as well as the complex bio-material of micro-structural level, often with a resolution of better than 1 μm. In this study, nanoindentation was conducted to measure the localised elastic modulus and hardness values of bones at temperature of 23°C (room temperature – non-heated sample), 90°C and 150°C, respectively. All experiments were conducted at room temperature (~23°C). The elastic modulus (E) and nanoindentation hardenss (H) values in the longitudinal direction of bones heated at 150°C were recorded as 23.43 GPa and 0.73 GPa, respectively;as in transverse direction, the E and H values were 12.77 GPa and 0.54 GPa, respectively. It showed significant increases of 44% and 43% in the longitudinal direction as compared to those of the non heat-treated bones. In addition, E and H values in transverse direction also showed increases of 23% and 38%, respectively as compared to those of the non heat-treated bones. Furthermore, heat-treated bones at 90°C in longitudinal direction also appeared to have significant increases of 18% and 31% in E and H values, respectively. However, the E and H values in transverse direction increase only by 0.4% and 12.8%, respectively. In addition, compressive test is employed to measure the global stiffness (E) of the bone samples. This paper reviews the machinability and mechanical properties of natural fiber-reinforced composites. Coupling agents, operating parameters, as well as chemical treatment effects on natural fiber-reinforced composites’ machinability are also reviewed. Moreover, the impacts of fibers’ physical properties on the machinability of the composite are mentioned. Fiber volume fraction (Vf), fiber orientation as well as chemical treatment effects on mechanical properties are also defined. Conclusively, the effect of fibers’ physical properties as well as mechanical properties is described. It was discovered that chemical treatment of natural fibers improved their compatibility with the matrix by removing their surface tissues, increasing the roughness average (Ra), and reducing moisture absorption. Also, the Orientation of the fiber plays an important role in controlling the mechanical properties of the composite. Moreover, some physical properties of the fibers, including quality of fiber distributed in the matrix;fiber size, length, and diameter;moisture absorption;porosity and the way fibers break during compounding with the matrix, were found to affect the mechanical properties of the composites formed.

This research focused on the dynamic mechanical and thermal properties of woven mat jute/kenaf/jute(J/K/J)and kenaf/jute/kenaf(K/J/K)hybrid *** mechanical analysis(DMA)and Thermo-gravimetric Analysis(TGA)were used to study the effect of layering sequence on the thermal properties of kenaf/jute hybrid *** DMA results;it was found that the differences in the stacking sequence between the kenaf/jute composites do not affect their storage modulus,loss modulus and damping *** the TGA and DMA results,it has been shown that stacking sequence has given positive effect to the kenaf/jute hybrid composite compared to pure epoxy *** is because kenaf and jute fibre has increased the Tg values of the composites,thus affect the thermal *** showed that the storage modulus for kenaf/jute hybrid composites increased compared with pure epoxy composites with increasing temperature and the values of remained almost the same at glass transition temperature(Tg),the hybrid composite perhaps due to the improved fibre/matrix interface *** preliminary analysis could provide a new direction for the creation of a novel hybrid composite which offers unique properties which cannot be accomplished in a single material system.

The present paper reviews crushing process of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRPs) composites tubular structures. Working with anisotropic material requires consideration of specific parameter definition in order to tailor a well-engineered composite structure. These parameters include geometry design, strain rate sensitivity, material properties, laminate design, interlaminar fracture toughness and off-axis loading conditions which are reviewed in this paper to create a comprehensive data base for researchers, engineers and scientists in the field. Each of these parameters influences the structural integrity and progressive crushing behaviour. In this extensive review each of these parameters is introduced, explained and evaluated. Construction of a well-engineered composite structure and triggering mechanism to strain rate sensitivity and testing conditions followed by failure mechanisms are extensively reviewed. Furthermore, this paper has mainly focused on experimental analysis that has been carried out on different types of FRP composites in the past two decades.
