Reduced Order Modeling & Controller Design for Mass Transfer in a Grain Storage System

This paper considers the problem of simulating the humidity distributions of a grain storage system. The distributions are described by partial differential equations(PDE). It is quite difficult to obtain the humidity profiles from the PDE model. Hence, a discretization method is applied to obtain an equivalent ordinary differential equation model. However, after applying the discretization technique, the cost of solving the system increases as the size increases to a few thousands. It may be noted that after discretization,the degree of freedom of the system remain the same while the order increases. The large dynamic model is reduced using a proper orthogonal decomposition based technique and an equivalent model but of much reduced size is obtained. A controller based on optimal control theory is designed to obtain an input such that the output humidity reaches a desired profile and also its stability is *** results are presented to show the validity of the reduced model and possible further extensions are identified.

Effects of 42-year long-term fertilizer management on soil phosphorus availability, fractionation,adsorption–desorption isotherm and plant uptake in flooded tropical rice

Soil phosphorus(P) fractionation, adsorption, and desorption isotherm, and rice yield and P uptake were investigated in flooded tropical rice(Oryza sativa L.) following 42-year fertilizer and manure application. The treatments included low-input [unfertilized control without N, P, or K(C0N0)], farmyard manure(FYM)(C1N0), NP(C0NP), NPK(C0NPK), FYM + NP(C1NP), and high-input treatment, FYM + NPK(C1NPK). Grain yield was increased significantly by 74%over the control under the combined application of FYM + NPK. However, under low- and high-input treatments, yield as well as P uptake was maintained at constant levels for 35 *** the same period, high yield levels and P uptake were maintained under the C0 NP, C0 NPK,and C1 NPK treatments. These are unique characteristics of a tropical flooded ecosystem, which is a self-sustaining system for rice production. The Fe–P fraction was highest compared to the Ca–P and Al–P fractions after 42 years of fertilizer application and was significantly higher under FYM + NPK treatment. The P adsorption capacity of soil was highest under the low-input treatment and lowest under long-term balanced fertilization(FYM + NPK). In contrast, P desorption capacity was highest under NPK and lowest in the control treatment. Long-term balanced fertilization in the form of FYM + NPK for 42 years lowered the bonding energy and adsorption capacity for P in soil but increased its desorption potential, increasing P availability to the plant and leading to higher P uptake and yield maintenance.

Effect of Sm-rich liquid phase on magnetic properties and microstructures of sintered 2:17-type Sm-Co magnet

The effect of Sm-rich liquid phase （Sm2Co3） on magnetic properties and microstructure of 2：17-type Sin-Co magnet was studied. Three phases existed in liquid phase ingot, and took on white, dark grey and grey, respectively. It was found that the composition of the grey area was similar to the nominal one. Our results indicated that the optimal composition was obtained at 3 wt.% liquid phase added, and the magnetic properties were B^I 1.58 kGs, Hci〉26 kOe, （BH）m=29.51 MGOe. Br increased by 3%, Hci was 13 times larger, and （B/-/）m was 6 times bigger than none liquid phase magnets. Moreover, with the aging time decreasing from 20 to 8 h, the squareness of the demagnetization curves got better, while the coercivity of the samples decreased. It revealed that Sm（Co,Cu）5 phase also precipitated at particle boundaries. It maybe also enhanced the coercivity.

Oxide evolution in NdDy-Fe-B magnet during aging process

Sintered NdDy-Fe-B magnets were made from strip cast flakes by powder metallurgy method. For the magnet with 6 wt.% Dy substituted Nd, a remarkable coercivity increase of 70% was obtained after aging at 900 ℃ for 2 h and a high coercivity of 23.5 kOe was achieved after aging at 520 ℃ for 2 h. The average diameter of the oxide particles decreased during the following 900℃ aging treatment. Dy and O diffusion from oxide particles to Nd-rich phase during the aging process was observed. The oxide evolution and Dy element diffusion were helpful to the coercivity enhancement.

Hot deformation in nanocrystalline Nd-Fe-B backward extruded rings

Radially oriented Nd-Fe-B rings are prepared by backward extrusion of fine grained melt-spun powder. Melt- spun powder with the nominal composition of ***6.0Ga0.6A10.2B0.9 （wt%） is used as starting material. The effects of process variables, such as deformation temperature （Td）, strain rate （ε） and height reduction （△h%）, on the magnetic properties of the rings are investigated. A scanning electron microscope （SEM） equipped with an energy spectrum device is used to study the metallograph and microfracture of the extruded rings. The Br and （BH）max reach the optimum values at Td =800℃,ε= 0.01 mm/s, and △h% = 70%. It is found by SEM observations that the particle boundaries, which seemingly correspond to the interfaces of the starting melt-spun powders, emerge after the corrosion of metallography specimens. This is helpful for studying the effects of powder-powder interface on the local deformation and deformation homogeneity in the rings. For different spatial positions of the extruded rings, there are characteristic metallographies and microfractures. The upper end of the rings has the least deformation and worst texture, and therefore the worst magnetic properties. The magnetic properties in the radial direction increase slightly along the axis from the bottom to the middle, then steeply decrease at the upper end of the ring. The deformation and the formation-of-texturing processes are discussed. The deformation and the texturing formation of melt-spun Nd-Fe-B alloys probably involve grain boundary sliding and grain rotation, the solution-precipitation process and preferential growth of Nd2Fel4B nanograins along the easy growth a-axis.

Development of non-shrinkable ceramic composites for use in high-power microwave tubes

Al_2O_3–CaO–SiC-based ceramic composites with four different compositions were sintered at 1700℃ for 3 h in an air furnace. The phase analysis, microstructural characterization, and elemental composition determination of the developed composites were performed by X-ray diffraction(XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy(FESEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray(EDAX) analysis, respectively. The shrinkage, thermal properties, and electrical resistivity of the composites were also studied. The experimental results showed the effects of adding silicon carbide and calcia to alumina on the thermal, electrical, and shrinkage properties of the resultant composites. Among the four investigated ceramic composites, the one composed of 99 wt% alumina, 0.5 wt% CaO, and 0.5 wt% SiC exhibited the best characteristics for use as a potting material in a dispenser cathode of a microwave tube. The material exhibited slight expansion instead of shrinkage during drying or firing. Other properties of the composite powder, such as its thermal properties and electrical resistivity, were comparable to those of a commercial alumina powder.

Anisotropic corrosion behavior of sintered(Ce_(0.15)Nd_(0.85))_(30)Fe_(bal)B permanent magnets

In this work, the corrosion behavior of the surface parallel to the oriented c-axis(c‖) and perpendicular to c-axis(c⊥)in the(Ce_(0.15)Nd_(0.85))_(30)Fe_(bal)B dual main phase magnet was studied. With the addition of Ce,the volume fraction of RE-rich phase shown in the backscattered electron(BSE) images is basically approximate on the two surfaces. The free corrosion potential(E_(corr)) of the c‖ surface is more negative,which shows the worse corrosion resistance from the perspective of thermodynamics. While the reaction kinetics parameters with the smaller free corrosion current(i_(corr)) and the larger transfer resistance(R_(ct)) react the opposite conclusion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. Moreover, the c‖ surface performs smaller ions concentration of corrosion product and less damaged corrosion morphology compared to c⊥ surface after the free corrosion. The inconformity is not affected by the RE-rich phase, but by the anisotropy of the grains that the c‖ surface has larger density of the atoms and the lower ratio of(Nd, Ce)/Fe.
