Life expectancy is increasing,leading to the continuous aging of the population in *** the health status of the older population is crucial to achieving healthy *** primary objective of the PENG ZU Study on Healthy Aging in China(PENG ZU Cohort)is to understand the natural progression of health status among the aging Chinese ***,the PENG ZU cohort aims to identify and validate multidimensional aging markers,uncover the underlying mechanisms of systemic aging and functional decline,and develop novel strategies and measures to delay functional decline and adverse health outcomes,while maintaining overall good *** PENG ZU cohort consists of 26,000 individuals aged 25 to 89 years from seven major geographical regions in *** data and biospecimens are collected according to standardized procedures at baseline and follow-up *** recruitment for the PENG ZU cohort was completed in October *** extensive analysis of multidimensional health-related data and bioresources collected from the cohort is anticipated to develop methods for evaluating functional status and elucidating multilevel,cross-scale interactions and regulatory mechanisms of healthy *** findings from this study will enhance the understanding of health changes due to aging,facilitate efficient and effective interventions to maintain functional ability,and reduce the incidence and severity of age-related diseases,thereby further promoting healthy aging.

Activation of cerebral Ras-related C3 botulinum toxin substrate(Rac) 1 promotes post-ischemic stroke functional recovery in aged mice

Brain functional impairment after stroke is common;however,the molecular mechanisms of post-stroke recovery remain *** is well-recognized that age is the most important independent predictor of poor outcomes after stroke as older patients show poorer functional outcomes following *** evidence suggests that axonal regeneration and angiogenesis,the major forms of brain plasticity responsible for post-stroke recovery,diminished with advanced *** studies suggest that Ras-related C3 botulinum toxin substrate(Rac)1 enhances stroke recovery as activation of Rac1 improved behavior recovery in a young mice stroke ***,we investigated the role of Rac1 signaling in long-term functional recovery and brain plasticity in an aged(male,18 to 22 months old C57BL/6J)brain after ischemic *** found that as mice aged,Rac1 expression declined in the *** overexpression of Rac1,using lentivirus encoding Rac1 injected day 1 after ischemic stroke,promoted cognitive(assessed using novel object recognition test)and sensorimotor(assessed using adhesive removal tests)recovery on days 14–*** was accompanied by the increase of neurite and proliferative endothelial cells in the periinfarct zone assessed by *** a reverse approach,pharmacological inhibition of Rac1 by intraperitoneal injection of Rac1 inhibitor NSC23766 for 14 successive days after ischemic stroke worsened the outcome with the reduction of neurite and proliferative endothelial ***,Rac1 inhibition reduced the activation of p21-activated kinase 1,the protein level of brain-derived neurotrophic factor,and increased the protein level of glial fibrillary acidic protein in the ischemic brain on day 28 after *** work provided insight into the mechanisms behind the diminished plasticity after cerebral ischemia in aged brains and identified Rac1 as a potential therapeutic target for improving functional recovery in the older adults after stroke.

Rapid Unconscious Acquisition of Conditioned Fear with Low-Spatial-Frequency but Emotionally Neutral Stimuli

It has long been proposed that emotionally“prepared”(i.e.,fear-related)stimuli are privileged in the unconscious acquisition of conditioned ***,as fear processing is suggested to highly depend on the coarse,low-spatial-frequency(LSF)components of the fear-related stimuli,it is plausible that LSF may play a unique role in the unconscious fear conditioning even with emotionally neutral ***,we provided empirical evidence that,following classical fear conditioning,an invisible,emotionally neutral conditioned stimulus(CS+)with LSF,but not with high spatial frequency(HSF),can rapidly elicit stronger skin conductance responses(SCRs)and larger pupil diameters than its CS−*** comparison,consciously perceived emotionally neutral CS+with LSF and HSF elicited comparable *** together,these results support that the unconscious fear conditioning does not necessarily entail emotionally prepared stimuli but prioritizes LSF information processing and highlight the crucial distinctions between the unconscious and the conscious fear *** findings not only coincide with the postulation that a rapid,spatial-frequency-dependent subcortical route is engaged in unconscious fear processing but also suggest the existence of multiple routes for conscious fear processing.

Theta Oscillations Support Prefrontal-hippocampal Interactions in Sequential Working Memory

The prefrontal cortex and hippocampus may support sequential working memory beyond episodic memory and spatial *** stereoelectroencephalography(SEEG)study investigated how the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex(DLPFC)interacts with the hippocampus in the online processing of sequential *** patients with epilepsy(eight women,age 27.6±8.2 years)completed a line ordering task with SEEG recordings over the DLPFC and the *** showed longer thinking times and more recall errors when asked to arrange random lines clockwise(random trials)than to maintain ordered lines(ordered trials)before recalling the orientation of a particular ***,the ordering-related increase in thinking time and recall error was associated with a transient theta power increase in the hippocampus and a sustained theta power increase in the DLPFC(3–10 Hz).In particular,the hippocampal theta power increase correlated with the memory precision of line ***,theta phase coherences between the DLPFC and hippocampus were enhanced for ordering,especially for more precisely memorized ***,the theta band DLPFC→hippocampus influence was selectively enhanced for ordering,especially for more precisely memorized *** study suggests that theta oscillations may support DLPFC-hippocampal interactions in the online processing of sequential information.

Communication could be an essential part of couples in their daily *** on Monitor and Acceptance Theory(MAT),the present study explored the mediating role of communication in the relationship between mindfulness and relationship quality among college-student *** research examined the dynamic relationship of monitoring and acceptance to relationship satisfaction in the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model(APIM),and the mediating effect of positive or negative communications in these relationships.A total of 96 pairs of couples in the universities in Nanjing,China participated in the *** measurements were used to measure the momentary levels of their monitor,acceptance,positive/negative communication,and relationship satisfaction.A Hierarchical Linear Model(HLM)was used to deal with the *** showed that the women’s monitor facet of state mindfulness negatively predicted men’s relationship satisfaction through women’s negative communication,and the women’s acceptance facet of state mindfulness positively predicted women’s relationship satisfaction through women’s positive and negative communication at the within-person *** study highlights the importance of cooperation in monitoring and acceptance for couples to own and hold high levels of relationship satisfaction.

Adaptation of Ocular Opponency Neurons Mediates Attention-Induced Ocular Dominance Plasticity

Previous research has shown that ocular dominance can be biased by prolonged attention to one *** ocular-opponency-neuron model of binocular rivalry has been proposed as a candidate account for this *** direct neural evidence is still *** manipulating the contrast of dichoptic testing gratings,here we measured the steady-state visually evoked potentials(SSVEPs)at the intermodulation frequencies to selectively track the activities of ocular-opponency-neurons before and after the“dichoptic-backward-movie”*** hour of adaptation caused a shift of perceptual and neural ocular dominance towards the unattended *** importantly,we found a decrease in the intermodulation SSVEP response after adaptation,which was significantly greater when high-contrast gratings were presented to the attended eye than when they were presented to the unattended *** results strongly support the view that the adaptation of ocular-opponency-neurons contributes to the ocular dominance plasticity induced by prolonged eye-based attention.

Insight into the mechanism of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural electroreduction to 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan over Cu anchored N-doped carbon nanosheets

Design of non-noble metal electrocatalysts for biomass conversion to high-value chemicals and understanding the related catalytic mechanisms are of profound significance but have remained a major ***,we developed a novel biomass-derived electrocatalyst(denoted as Cu/NC),featuring with electron-deficient copper nanoparticles anchored on N-doped carbon nanosheets,for the electrochemical reduction of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural(HMF)to 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan(BHMF,a vital precursor of functional polymers).The optimized Cu/NC electrocatalyst exhibited an excellent performance with high Faradaic efficiency(89.5%)and selectivity(90.8%)of BHMF at a low concentration of HMF(18.1 mM).Even at a very high HMF concentration(108.6 mM),the Faraday efficiency and selectivity of BHMF could still reach 74.8%and 81.1%,*** performance approached those of the reported noble metal-based *** study revealed that the N doping in the Cu/NC catalyst could regulate the electronic structure of Cu,strengthening the adsorption of the HMF carbonyl group,and thus boosting the selectivity of ***,strong electronic metal-support interactions of Cu and the N-doped carbon support optimized the charge transfer rate,thus promoting the dissociation of water to the active hydrogen(H^(*))species and boosting the reaction kinetic rate of H^(*)and HMF.

Emotion and executive control are often conceptualized as two distinct modes of human brain ***,however,is known about how the dynamic organization of large-scale functional brain networks that support flexible emotion processing and executive control,especially their *** amygdala and prefrontal systems have long been thought to play crucial roles in these *** advances in human neuroimaging studies have begun to delineate functional organization principles among the large-scale brain networks underlying emotion,executive control,and their ***,we propose a dynamic brain network model to account for interactive competition between emotion and executive control by reviewing recent resting-state and task-related neuroimaging studies using network-based *** this model,dynamic interactions among the executive control network,the salience network,the default mode network,and sensorimotor networks enable dynamic processes of emotion and support flexible executive control of multiple processes;neural oscillations across multiple frequency bands and the locus coeruleus−norepinephrine pathway serve as communicational mechanisms underlying dynamic synergy among large-scale functional brain *** model has important implications for understanding how the dynamic organization of complex brain systems and networks empowers flexible cognitive and affective functions.

Identification of research gaps to improve care for healthy ageing:a scoping review

Objective Several research gaps affect the improvement of care for healthy *** identification is crucial to developing a specific research prioritisation agenda supporting progress at the micro(clinical),meso(service delivery)and macro(system)*** achieve this,a scoping review was carried out to describe the most significant gaps impeding the improvement of care for healthy *** A scoping review of the literature was conducted according to the Joanna Briggs Institute *** selected articles were analysed to identify topics or areas essential for improving care for healthy ageing but requiring further support from *** criteria Every type of scientific article,except for randomised controlled trials,was considered of potential interest without restrictions on publication date,type of publication and *** sources A systematic search(last search:6 December 2023)was conducted using PubMed,MEDLINE and *** Overall,1558 articles were retrieved from the *** these,310 were finally retained for this work.A total of 1195 research gaps were identified(average:3.85 per article)and clustered into the 13 primary areas:ageing,care approach,caregivers,health economics,health,interventions,policies,research,settings,training,technology,specific populations and understanding the older *** particular,research for improving the person-centred approach(n=38),better considering cultural diversities(n=27),implementing integrated care(n=25)and ensuring access to care(n=25)were the most prevalent priorities reported in the *** A wide range of factors spanning multiple disciplines,from clinical to policy levels,require special consideration,exploration and *** findings of this scoping review represent an essential step in identifying gaps for developing a research prioritisation agenda to improve care for healthy ageing.
