Metal oxides with oxygen vacancies have a significant impact on catalytic activity for the transformation of organic pollutants in waste-to-energy(WtE)incineration *** study aims to investigate the influence of hematite surface oxygen point defects on the formation of environmentally persistent free radicals(EPFRs)from phenolic compounds based on the first-principles *** oxygen-deficient conditions were considered:oxygen vacancies at the top surface and on the *** simulations indicate that the adsorption strength of phenol on theα-Fe_(2)O_(3)(0001)surface is enhanced by the presence of oxygen ***,the presence of oxygen vacancies has a negative impact on the dissociation of the phenol molecule,particularly for the surface with a defective point at the top ***-kinetic parameters were established over a temperature range of300-1000 K,and lower reaction rate constants were observed for the scission of phenolic O-H bonds over the oxygen-deficient surfaces compared to the pristine *** negative effects caused by the oxygen-deficient conditions could be attributed to the local reduction of FeⅢto FeⅡ,which lower the oxidizing ability of surface reaction *** findings of this study provide us a promising approach to regulate the formation of EPFRs.

Effects of Biostimulation-Bioaugmentation on Coastal Microbial Community in an in situ Mesocosm System

Globally,various types of pollution affect coastal waters as a result of human *** and biostimulation are effective methods for treating water ***,few studies have explored the response of coastal prokaryotic and eukaryotic communities to bioaugmentation and ***,a 28-day outdoor mesocosm experiment with two treatments(bioaugmentation-A and combined treatment of bioaugmentation and biostimulation-AS)and a control(untreated-C)were carried *** experiment was conducted in Meishan Bay to explore the composition,dynamics,and co-occurrence patterns of prokaryotic and eukaryotic communities in response to the A and AS using 16S rRNA and 18S rRNA gene amplicon *** treatment,Gammaproteobacteria and Epsilonproteobacteria were significantly increased in group AS compared to group C,while Flavobacteriia and Saprospirae were significantly *** was significantly reduced in AS compared to C,while Chrysophyta was significantly reduced in both AS and *** to C,the principal response curve analyses of the prokaryotic and eukaryotic communities both showed an increasing trend followed by a decreasing trend for ***,the trends of prokaryotic and eukaryotic communities in group A were similar to those in group AS compared with group C,but AS changed them more than A *** to the species weight table on principal response curves,a significant increase was observed in beneficial bacteria in prokaryotic communities,such as Rhodobacterales and Oceanospirillales,along with a decrease in autotrophs in eukaryotic communities,such as Chrysophyta and *** properties of network analysis reveal that A and AS complicate the interactions between the prokaryotic and eukaryotic ***,these findings expand our understanding of the response pattern of the bioaugmentation and biostimulation on coastal prokaryotic and eukaryotic communities.

The great catastrophe: causes of the Permo-Triassic marine mass extinction

The marine losses during the Permo-Triassic mass extinction were the worst ever experienced. All groups were badly affected, especially amongst the benthos(e.g. brachiopods, corals, bryozoans, foraminifers,ostracods). Planktonic populations underwent a fundamental change with eukaryotic algae being replaced by nitrogen-fixing bacteria, green-sulphur bacteria, sulphate-reducing bacteria and prasinophytes. Detailed studies of boundary sections, especially those in South China, have resolved the crisis to a ～55 kyr interval straddling the Permo-Triassic boundary. Many of the losses occur at the beginning and end of this interval painting a picture of a two-phase extinction. Improved knowledge of the extinction has been supported by numerous geochemical studies that allow diverse proposed extinction mechanisms to be studied. A transition from oxygenated to anoxic-euxinic conditions is seen in most sections globally, although the intensity and timing shows regional variability. Decreased ocean ventilation coincides with rapidly rising temperatures and many extinction scenarios attribute the losses to both anoxia and high *** kill mechanisms include ocean acidification for which there is conflicting support from geochemical proxies and, even less likely, siltation(burial under a massive influx of terrigenous sediment) which lacks substantive sedimentological evidence. The ultimate driver of the catastrophic changes at the end of the Permian was likely Siberian Trap eruptions and their associated carbon dioxide emissions with consequences such as warming, ocean stagnation and acidification. Hydrothermal stability is crucial for the practical application of deNO_(x)catalyst on diesel vehicles,for the selective catalytic reduction of NO_(x)with NH_(3)(NH_(3)-SCR).SnO_(2)-based materials possess superior hydrothermal stability,which is attractive for the development of NH_(3)-SCR *** this work,a series of Ce-Nb/SnO_(2)catalysts,with Ce and Nb loading on SnO_(2)support,were prepared by impregnation *** was found that,the NH_(3)-SCR activities and hydrothermal stabilities of the Ce-Nb/SnO_(2)catalysts significantly varied with the impregnation sequences,and the Ce-Nb(f)/SnO_(2) catalyst that firstly impregnated Nb and then impregnated Ce exhibited the best *** characterization results revealed that CeNb(f)/SnO_(2)possessed appropriate acidity and redox ***,the strong synergistic effect between Nb and Sn species stabilized the structure and maintained the dispersion of acid *** study may provide a new understanding for the effect of impregnation sequence on activity and hydrothermal stability and a new environmental-friendly NH_(3)-SCR catalyst with potential applications for NO_(x)removal from diesel and hydrogenfueled engines.

On the longitudinal shifts of the Agulhas retroflection point

The Agulhas system is the strongest western boundary current system in the Southern Hemisphere and plays an important role in modulating the Indian-to-Atlantic Ocean water exchange by the Agulhas *** is difficult to measure in situ transport of the Agulhas leakage as well as the Agulhas retroflection position due to their intermittent *** this study,an innovative kinematic algorithm was designed and applied to the gridded altimeter observational data,to ascertain the longitudinal position of Agulhas retroflection,the stability of Agulhas jet stream,as well as its *** results show that the east-west shift of retroflection is related neither to the strength of Agulhas current nor to its *** analysis uncovers the connection between the westward extension of Agulhas jet stream and an anomalous cyclonic circulation at its northern side,which is likely attributed to the local wind stress curl *** confirm the effect of local wind forcing on the east-west shift of retroflection,numerical sensitivity experiments were *** results show that the local wind stress can induce a similar longitudinal shift of the retroflection as altimetry *** statistical and case study indicates that whether an Agulhas ring can continuously migrate westward to the Atlantic Ocean or re-merge into the main flow depends on the retroflection ***,the westward retroflection may contribute to a stronger Agulhas leakage than the eastward retroflection.

Photochemical Production of Methyl Halides with Guaiacol as the Precursor

Methyl halides are crucial trace greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, playing a significant role in global climate change and the atmospheric environment. This study investigated the photochemical production of methyl halides in an artificial seawater system using guaiacol as a precursor through laboratory simulation experiments. The influences of various environmental factors, including illumination time, radiation wavebands, illumination intensity, concentrations of guaiacol and halide ions（X-）, Fe3+, salinity, dissolved oxygen（DO）, and pH value on the photochemical production of methyl halides were examined. We demonstrated that increased illumination intensity and duration promote the photochemical production of methyl halides, with a notable enhancement under UV-B radiation. Guaiacol and halide ions were identified as key precursors, and their high concentrations facilitated the formation of methyl halides. Additionally, different types of halide ions exhibited a competitive relationship in producing methyl halides. The study found that an increase in pH inhibited the photochemical formation of CH3I due to the reaction between OH-and ·CH3. Dissolved oxygen was found to inhibit the photochemical formation of CH3I while promoting the formation of CH3Cl. Conversely, an appropriate concentration of Fe3+enhanced the photochemical production of methyl halides. Field observations indicated a high photochemical production of methyl halides in the natural waters near Qingdao's coastal area, likely due to the high concentration of dissolved organic matter（DOM）, which supports photochemical reactions. Furthermore, the photochemical production of methyl halides in natural seawater was significantly higher than in dark conditions, underscoring the importance of illumination in promoting these photochemical processes in seawater.

TiO_(2)-supported V_(2)O_(5)catalysts are commonly used in NO_(x)reduction with ammonia due to their robust catalytic *** these catalysts,it is generally considered that the active species are mainly derived from the vanadia species rather than the intrinsic structure of V-O-Ti entities,namely the interface *** reveal the role of V-O-Ti entities in NH_(3)-SCR,herein,we prepared TiO_(2)/V_(2)O_(5)catalysts and demonstrated that V-O-Ti entities were more active for NO_(x)reduction under wet conditions than the V sites(V=O)working *** the V-O-Ti entities,kinetic measurements and first principles calculations revealed that NH_(3)activation exhibited a much lower energy barrier than that on V=O *** wet conditions,the V-O-Ti interface significantly inhibited the transformation of V=O to V-OH sites thus benefiting NH_(3)*** wet conditions,meanwhile,the migration of NH_(4)^(+)from Ti site neighboring the V-O-Ti interface to Ti site of the V-O-Ti interface was exothermic;thus,V-O-Ti entities together with neighboring Ti sites could serve as channels linking NH_(3)pool and active centers for activation of NH_(4)^(+).This finding reveals that the V-O-Ti interface sites on V-based catalysts play a crucial role in NO_(x)removal under realistic conditions,providing a new perspective on NH_(3)-SCR mechanism.

Nano-enabled silicone-rubber articles for feeding or chewing could be a source of metallic nanoparticles(NPs)directly exposed to infants and young ***,the impact of steam disinfection on release of NPs and the related potential risks to children's health are ***,we investigated contents and form of Ag and Zn in 57 nano-enabled silicone-rubber baby bottle teats,pacifiers,and teethers of seven countries and examined the impacts of steam disinfection on in vitro bioaccessibility(IVBA)of Ag and Zn in the *** 89%articles had a mixture of Ag-and Zn-containing NPs and the teethers had relatively high Ag and Zn contents(up to 501 and 254μg/g,respectively).Steam disinfection caused rubber decomposition into micro(nano)plastics(0.54-15.7μm)and NP release from the interior of bulk rubber and micro-sized plastics,thus enhancing the IVBA of Ag and Zn by up to 5.5 *** findings provide insights into mechanisms for NP release by steam *** oral exposure risk assessment suggested low health concerns on individual metal release,our study points out the need to assess the potential health risks of child co-exposure to metallic NPs and micro(nano)plastics.

Influence of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation and Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation on Antarctic surface air temperature during 1900 to 2015

The importance of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation(AMO)and Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation(IPO)in influencing zonally asymmetric changes in Antarctic surface air temperature(SAT)has been ***,previous studies have primarily concentrated on examining the combined impact of the contrasting phases of the AMO and IPO,which have been dominant since the advent of satellite observations in *** study utilizes long-term reanalysis data to investigate the impact of four combinations of+AMO+IPO,–AMO–IPO,+AMO–IPO,and–AMO+IPO on Antarctic SAT over the past 115 ***+AMO phase is characterized by a spatial mean temperature amplitude of up to 0.5℃over the North Atlantic Ocean,accompanied by positive sea surface temperature(SST)anomalies in the tropical eastern Pacific and negative SST anomalies in the extratropical-mid-latitude western Pacific,which are indicative of the+IPO *** Antarctic SAT exhibits contrasting spatial patterns during the+AMO+IPO and+AMO–IPO ***,during the–AMO+IPO period,apart from the Antarctic Peninsula and the vicinity of the Weddell Sea,the entire Antarctic region experiences a warming *** most pronounced signal in the SAT anomalies is observed during the austral autumn,whereas the combination of–AMO and–IPO exhibits the smallest magnitude across all the *** wavetrain excited by the SST anomalies associated with the AMO and IPO induces upper-level and surface atmospheric circulation anomalies,which alter the SAT ***,downward longwave radiation anomalies related to anomalous cloud cover play a crucial *** the future,if the phases of AMO and IPO were to reverse(AMO transitioning to a negative phase and IPO transitioning to a positive phase),Antarctica could potentially face more pronounced warming and accelerated melting compared to the current observations.

Photoelectrocatalytic hydrogen evolution and synchronous degradation of organic pollutants by pg-C_(3)N_(4)/β-FeOOH S-scheme heterojunction

Crafting photoelectrocatalytic materials with robust oxidation-reduction properties for simultaneous hydrogen evolution and pollutant degradation poses a formidable *** this study,a pg-C_(3)N_(4)/β-FeOOH S-scheme heterostructure with a special energy band structure was developed by anchoring porous pg-C_(3)N_(4)on needle shapedβ-*** as a hole extraction layer,needle-leaf-likeβ-FeOOH can facilitate efficient hole migration and enhance charge ***,the optimized 0.2-pg-C_(3)N_(4)/β-FeOOH could degrade 78%of ofloxacin(OFLO)in 90 *** organic pollutants could absorb a large number of holes,which prompted a greater proportion of photogenerated electrons to actively participate in the hydrogen evolution reaction at the ***,the hydrogen production of 0.2-pg-C_(3)N_(4)/β-FeOOH reached 1452.88μmol cm^(-2)h^(-1),exhibiting a notable increase of 61.81-165.12μmol cm^(-2)h^(-1)compared with that in the absence of *** and theoretical calculation results underscore that this investigation is grounded in a distinctive electron and hole dual channel transfer *** findings offer novel insights for the future development of S-scheme heterojunction photoelectrocatalytic materials capable of concurrently degrading pollutants and promoting hydrogen evolution.
