An application of a seismic nodal system with seismic ambient noise near Kunlun Station, Antarctica: estimating ice thickness and firn structure

The thickness and upper densification structure of an ice sheet are important parameters for dynamic ice sheet modeling and glacier mass balance studies. Seismic ambient noise methods, such as the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio(H/V) method and ambient noise cross-correlation method, are becoming increasingly popular in glacier structure investigations. During China's 39th expedition to Antarctica, seismic ambient noise experiments were conducted to investigate the structure of the ice sheet at Kunlun Station, Dome A,using a seismic nodal system. We obtained a broad band(0.1–10 Hz) H/V curve with a 1-hour noise record from a seismic node. In addition, we extracted the Rayleigh wave dispersion curve with 5-day noise cross-correlation functions from a linear dense seismic *** clear peaks were observed in the H/V curve — a lower peak at ～0.17 Hz and two higher frequency peaks at ～3 Hz and ～6 Hz. We inverted the ice sheet thickness using the lower frequency portion of the H/V curve and inverted the upper structure of the ice sheet using the higher frequency portion of the H/V curve jointly with the dispersion curve. Our estimations from ambient noise observations were consistent with those derived from the BedMachine ice sheet thickness dataset and the density profile determined by ground-penetrating radar investigations at the same site.

How Do Deep Learning Forecasting Models Perform for Surface Variables in the South China Sea Compared to Operational Oceanography Forecasting systems?

It is fundamental and useful to investigate how deep learning forecasting models(DLMs)perform compared to operational oceanography forecast systems(OFSs).However,few studies have intercompared their performances using an identical *** this study,three physically reasonable DLMs are implemented for the forecasting of the sea surface temperature(SST),sea level anomaly(SLA),and sea surface velocity in the South China *** DLMs are validated against both the testing dataset and the“OceanPredict”Class 4 *** show that the DLMs'RMSEs against the latter increase by 44%,245%,302%,and 109%for SST,SLA,current speed,and direction,respectively,compared to those against the ***,different references have significant influences on the validation,and it is necessary to use an identical and independent reference to intercompare the DLMs and *** the Class 4 dataset,the DLMs present significantly better performance for SLA than the OFSs,and slightly better performances for other *** error patterns of the DLMs and OFSs show a high degree of similarity,which is reasonable from the viewpoint of predictability,facilitating further applications of the *** extreme events,the DLMs and OFSs both present large but similar forecast errors for SLA and current speed,while the DLMs are likely to give larger errors for SST and current *** study provides an evaluation of the forecast skills of commonly used DLMs and provides an example to objectively intercompare different DLMs.

Air pollution in China covers a large area with complex sources and formation mechanisms, making it a unique place to conduct air pollution and atmospheric chemistry research. The National Natural Science Foundation of China's Major Research Plan entitled “Fundamental Researches on the Formation and Response Mechanism of the Air Pollution Complex in China”(or the Plan) has funded 76 research projects to explore the causes of air pollution in China, and the key processes of air pollution in atmospheric physics and atmospheric chemistry. In order to summarize the abundant data from the Plan and exhibit the long-term impacts domestically and internationally, an integration project is responsible for collecting the various types of data generated by the 76 projects of the Plan. This project has classified and integrated these data, forming eight categories containing 258 datasets and 15 technical reports in total. The integration project has led to the successful establishment of the China Air Pollution Data center(CAPDC) platform, providing storage, retrieval, and download services for the eight categories. This platform has distinct features including data visualization, related project information querying, and bilingual services in both English and Chinese, which allows for rapid searching and downloading of data and provides a solid foundation of data and support for future related research. Air pollution control in China, especially in the past decade, is undeniably a global exemplar, and this data center is the first in China to focus on research into the country's air pollution complex.

Molecular Dynamics Simulation on the Interaction of R290 and POE Lubricants

In this work,the interactions between the environmentally friendly refrigerant propane(R290) and Polyol Ester(POE) including solubility parameters,diffusion coefficients,binding energies,and radial distribution functions were investigated using molecular dynamics(MD).Specifically,the effect of chain length of Pentaerythritol esters(PEC) as the representative component of POE on the interaction of PEC/R290 was *** solubility parameters difference exhibits the PEC and R290 are more easily miscible as increasing chain length of PEC,and there is plateau as the chain lengths is above 8 *** addition,it was also found that solubility parameters are various for the isomers due to the different spatial ***,the presence of PEC would reduce the diffusion coefficient of R290 in the mixed system of R290/lubricant with the reduction of20% on *** is also found that van der Waals forces are dominant in the R290/PEC *** PEC molecules start to be bound to the H atoms of R290 at the first neighbor shell layer with a radius of 0.219 ***,the molecular simulation model of POE22 considering various actual components was innovatively *** results showed that the solubility of R290 with typical POE lubricant is affected by the composition and proportions of based oil and additives.

Phyllosphere eukaryotic microalgal communities in rainforests:Drivers and diversity

Phyllosphere algae are common in tropical rainforests,forming visible biofilms or spots on plant leaf ***,knowledge of phyllosphere algal diversity and the environmental factors that drive that diversity is *** aim of this study is to identify the environmental factors that drive phyllosphere algal community composition and diversity in *** this purpose,we used single molecule real-time sequencing of full-length 18S rDNA to characterize the composition of phyllosphere microalgal communities growing on four host tree species(Ficus tikoua,Caryota mitis,Arenga pinnata,and Musa acuminata) common to three types of forest over four months at the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden,Yunnan Province,*** 18S rDNA sequences revealed that the green algae orders Watanabeales and Trentepohliales were dominant in almost all algal communities and that phyllosphere algal species richness and biomass were lower in planted forest than in primeval and reserve *** addition,algal community composition differed significantly between planted forest and primeval *** also found that algal communities were affected by soluble reactive phosphorous,total nitrogen,and ammonium *** findings indicate that algal community structure is significantly related to forest type and host tree ***,this study is the first to identify environmental factors that affect phyllosphere algal communities,significantly contributing to future taxonomic research,especially for the green algae orders Watanabeales and *** research also serves as an important reference for molecular diversity analysis of algae in other specific habitats,such as epiphytic algae and soil algae.

Chloroform and other volatile organic pollutants have garnered widespread attention from the public and researchers,because of their potential harm to the respiratory system,nervous system,skin,and ***,research on chloroform vapor sensing is still in its early stages,primarily due to the lack of specific recognition *** we report a mesoporous photonic crystal sensor incorporating carbon dots-based nanoreceptor(HMSS@CDs-PCs)for enhanced chloroform *** colloidal PC packed with hollow mesoporous silica spheres provides an interconnected ordered macro-meso-hierarchical porous structure,ideal for rapid gas sensing utilizing the photonic bandgap shift as the readout *** as-synthesized CDs with pyridinic-N-oxide functional groups adsorbed in the hollow mesoporous silica spheres are found to not only serve as the chloroform adsorption sites,but also a molecular glue that prevents crack formation in the colloidal *** sensitivity of HMSS@CDs-PCs sensor is 0.79 nm ppm^(-1)and an impressively low limit of detection is 3.22 ppm,which are the best reported values in fast-response chloroform vapor sensor without multi-signal *** positive response time is 7.5 s and the negative response time 9 ***,relatively stable sensing can be maintained within a relative humidity of 20%-85%RH and temperature of 25-55℃.This study demonstrates that HMSS@CDs-PCs sensors have practical application potential in indoor and outdoor chloroform vapor detection.

Unveiling phosphofructokinase as the key target: an innovative strategy combining pull-down assays with optical imaging for snail-killing mechanism exploration

The Pomacea canaliculata, also known as apple snail, is an invasive species in China, posing a serious threat to agricultural production and public health. To prevent its rampant infestation, we developed a highly efficient snail-killing lead compound, 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-(pyridin-3-yl)urea (PBQ). However, the killing mechanism of PBQ remains unclear. To elucidate this, two novel compounds, B-PBQ and J-PBQ, were developed through structural modification of PBQ and were used, through both protein pull-down assay and confocal laser scanning microscopy imaging, to identify and confirm that phosphofructokinase(PFK) in the apple snail is the primary target protein of PBQ. Further studies revealed that PBQ successfully inhibits the activity,content, and expression of PFK in apple snail, disrupting the glycolysis pathway and leading to abnormal energy *** disruptions impair the snail’s tolerance to low oxygen, resulting in its efficient eradication. These findings offer a promising direction for developing next-generation PFK-targeted snail-killing pesticides. Furthermore, the strategy of combining pull-down assays with optical imaging used in this work provides a novel approach for the exploration of mechanisms of other pesticide candidates.

Assessing the Connectivity of a Regional Fractured Aquifer Based on a Hydraulic Conductivity Field Reversed by Multi-Well Pumping Tests and Numerical Groundwater Flow Modeling

Aquifer connectivity could greatly affect groundwater flow and further control the contaminant transport in fractured ***,assessing connectivity of fractured aquifer at regional scales is still a challenge because such connectivity is difficult to be measured *** study proposes a framework for assessing connectivity of a fractured aquifer,with Qitaihe area,Heilongjiang Province,northeastern China as an illustrating study *** 3-D finite difference numerical models were established to interpret the results of three multi-well pumping tests and inversely estimate the distribution of hydraulic conductivity(K)in the fractured aquifer.A static connectivity metric of the minimum hydraulic resistance(MHR)was calculated,based on the optimized K-field,to evaluate the hydraulic connectivity in the aquifer,and the corresponding least resistance paths(LRPs)were *** results indicate a better horizontal connectivity in the fractured aquifer in the northeastern and middle parts than in the southwestern part of the study *** identified LRP indicated that the preferential flow channels at regional scales were controlled mainly by aquifer connectivity instead of local high-K *** results of this study can provide a method for aquifer connectivity estimation at regional scales.
