Objective To investigate the mechanism of Radix Kansui(RK)stir-fried with vinegar(VRK)decreased hepatotoxicity in *** According to a random number table,40 mice were randomly divided into negative control group(0.5%carboxymethylcellulose sodium,20 mL/kg),positive control group(0.1%mixture of carbon tetrachloride in soybean oil,20 mL/kg),RK group(the ethyl acetate extracts of RK,250 g crude drug/kg)and VRK group(the ethyl acetate extracts of VRK,250 g crude drug/kg)with 10 mice per *** mice were administered orally by gavage daily for 7 continuous *** morphology of liver tissues was examined to assess the liver injury by a transmission electron *** apoptosis in vivo was determined by terminal deoxynucleotidyltransferase-mediated dUTP-biotin nickend labeling(TUNEL)*** technique was adopted to detect the expression of particular antiapoptotic and proapoptotic proteins in the mitochondrial pathways,including B-cell lymphoma(Bcl-2)and caspase-3,as well as the expression of inflammatory mediators,including nuclear factor kappa B(NF-κB)and intercellular adhesion molecule-1(ICAM-1).Results Liver injury and hepatocyte apoptosis were observed in RK mice,and the liver injury were significantly reduced in VRK-treated *** immunohistochemistry study,compared with the negative control group,RK inhibited dramatically the Bcl-2 protein expression and significantly increased the expression of caspase-3,NF-κB and ICAM-1(all P<0.01).Compared with the RK group,VRK group induced significant increase on Bcl-2 protein expression,and decreased the caspase-3,NF-κB and ICAM-1 protein expression(P<0.05 or <0.01).Conclusion The mechanism of reduced hepatotoxicity of VRK may be associated with the reduced inflammation,regulation of antiapoptotic and proapoptotic mediators in the mitochondrial pathway.

Carum carvi or caraway is traditionally used for treatment of indigestion,pneumonia,and as appetizer,galactagogue,and *** oil,fixed oil and many other valuable extractive compounds with industrial applications are prepared from *** review article has new deep research on caraway as medicinal *** preparing the manuscript,the information was extracted from accessible international databases(Google scholar,PubMed,Science direct,Springer,and Wiley),electronic resources and traditional books by key word of caraway or Carum *** results of traditional studies exhibited that the galactagogue and carminative effects of caraway fruits are superior to other ***,the traditional scholars used it as appetizer,while caraway was the main ingredient of anti-obesity drugs in traditional medicine,which has been confirmed in two modern clinical trials of human *** oil in combination with peppermint oil or menthol is used for treatment of functional dyspepsia in clinical *** oil topically on abdomen relieves the IBS symptoms in ***,the use of caraway oil is not recommended in adults under 18 years due to insufficient data,but it can topically use as anti-colic and carminative agent in children or *** antiaflatoxigenic,antioxidant and antimicrobial effects of caraway oil along with its reputation as spice help the industries to use it as natural preservatives and antioxidant agents.

Herbal medicines are popular natural medicines that have been used for *** use of alternative medicines continues to expand rapidly across the *** World Health Organization suggests that quality assessment of natural medicines is essential for any therapeutic or health care applications,as their therapeutic potential varies between different geographic origins,plant species,and *** of herbal medicines based on a limited number of secondary metabolites is not an ideal *** quality should be considered based on a complete metabolic profile,as their pharmacological activity is not due to a few specific secondary metabolites but rather a larger group of bioactive compounds.A holistic and integrative approach using rapid and nondestructive analytical strategies for the screening of herbal medicines is required for robust *** this study,a rapid and effective quality assessment system for geographical traceability,species,and variety-specific authenticity of the widely used natural medicines turmeric,Ocimum,and Withania somnifera was investigated using Fourier transform near-infrared(FT-NIR)spectroscopy-based metabolic *** different geographical origins of turmeric,five different Ocimum species,and three different varieties of roots and leaves of Withania somnifera were studied with the aid of machine learning *** good discrimination(R^(2)>0.98,Q^(2)>0.97,and accuracy=1.0)with sensitivity and specificity of 100%was achieved using this metabolic fingerprinting *** study demonstrated that FT-NIR-based rapid metabolic fingerprinting can be used as a robust analytical method to authenticate several important medicinal herbs.

Insight into DNA protection ability of medicinal herbs and potential mechanisms in hydrogen peroxide damages model

DNA damage is one of the most important consequences of oxidative stress in the cells. If DNA repair is unable to modify these inducible DNA damages, genomic instability may lead to mutation, cancer, aging and many other diseases. Single cell gel electrophoresis or comet assay is a common and versatile method to quantify these types of DNA damages. DNA damages induced by hydrogen peroxide(H_2O_2) are one of the proper models for measurement of protective ability of different compounds. So the main aim of this review is to provide an overview about protection ability of medicinal plants and their potential mechanism against H_2O_2 induced DNA damages. In this review, relevant researches on the effect of medicinal plants on DNA damages induced by H_2O_2 and possible molecular mechanisms are *** seems that, medicinal plants are considered as therapeutic key factors to protect DNA from consequences caused by oxidative stress. Sufficient in vitro evidences introduce them as DNA protective agents through different mechanisms including antioxidant activity and some other cellular mechanisms. Moreover, in order to correlate the antigenotoxicity effects with their potential antioxidant property, most of medicinal plants were evaluated in term of antioxidant activity using standard methods. This review highlights the preventive effects of herbal medicine against oxidative DNA damages as well as provides rational possibility to engage them in animal studies and future clinical investigations.

Acute and Sub-Chronic Toxicity Evaluation of the Crude Methanolic Bark Extract of Bridelia micrantha (Hochst.) Baill. (Phyllanthaceae) and Its Fraction

Bridelia micrantha, commonly known as coastal golden leaf, is a member of the family Phyllanthaceae. In preliminary studies nine fractions, named F1 - F9, were obtained by fractionating the crude methanol extract of the stem bark of Bridelia micrantha using column chromatographic techniques. The fraction F6 was the most active when tested for antibacterial activity. Thus, toxicity of this fraction was investigated for further use. The present study evaluated the acute and sub-chronic toxicity of the crude methanolic bark extract of Bridelia micrantha and its fraction. The acute toxicity was carried out according to the experimental protocol of Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The plant extract or the fraction F6 was administered orally to female mice at a single dose of 2000 mg/kg and the animals were observed for any behavioral changes or mortality for 14 days. In the sub-chronic toxicity study, the extract and fraction were administered orally at 200, 400 and 800 mg/kg bw/day for 28 days to healthy Wistar rats. The general behavior and body weight of the rats were recorded daily. At the end of the experimental period, hematological and biochemical analyses, changes in vital organ weight (liver, lung, heart, spleen and kidney), and histopathological examination of the liver and kidney were performed. No mortality or adverse effects were noted at the 2000 mg/kg dose during the oral acute toxicity test. In the sub-chronic study, the crude methanolic bark extract of Bridelia micrantha and the fraction F6 induced no mortality or treatment-related adverse effects on body weight, general behavior, relative organ weights, hematological and biochemical parameters. Histopathological examination of the liver and kidney showed normal architecture suggesting no morphological alterations. In conclusion, the oral administration of the crude methanolic bark extract of Bridelia micrantha and the fraction F6 for 28 days

Croton sylvaticus(C. sylvaticus) is widely used as herbal medicine by the indigenous people of tropical Africa. The potential of C. sylvaticus as herbal medicine,the phytochemistry and pharmacological properties of its parts used as herbal medicines are reviewed. The extensive literature survey revealed that C. sylvaticus is traditionally used to treat or manage at least 24 human and animal diseases and ailments. The species is used as herbal medicine for diseases and ailments such as abdominal pains,boils,fever,inflammation,malaria,rheumatism,swellings and tuberculosis and as ethnoveterinary medicine. Multiple classes of phytochemicals such as alkaloids,anthraquinones,essential oils,flavonoids,lignan,phenolics,sterols,tannins and terpenoids have been isolated from the species. Scientific studies on C. sylvaticus indicate that it has a wide range of pharmacological activities which include antibacterial,antifungal,anti-inflammatory,antioxidant,larvicidal and effects on the central nervous system. Although studies have confirmed that C. sylvaticus has a wide range of bioactives,further research on the exact bioactive molecules and mechanisms of action are required.
