Numerical analysis of high Mach flow and flow reversal in the experimental advanced superconducting tokamak divertor

The B2-Eirene （SOLPS 4.0） code package is used to investigate the plasma parallel flow, i.e., the scrape-off layer （SOL） flow, in the experimental advanced superconducting tokamak （EAST） divertor. Simulation results show that the SOL flow in the divertor region can exhibit complex behaviour, such as a high Mach flow and flow reversal in different plasma regimes. When the divertor plasma is in the detachment state, the high Mach flow with approaching or exceeding sonic speed is observed away from the target plate in our simulation. When the divertor plasma is in the high recycling ~tate, the flow reversM with a ~mall Mach number （IMI 〈 0.2） is observed near the X-point along the separatrix region. The driving mechanisms for the high Mach flow and the reversed flow are analysed theoretically through momentum and continuity equations, respectively. The profile of the ionization sources is shown to be a possible formation condition causing the complex behaviour of the SOL flow. In addition, the effects of the high Mach flow and the flow reversal on the impurity transport are also discussed in this paper.

The Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak （EAST） is the first fully superconducting tokamak with a D-shaped cross-sectional plasma presently in operation. The ideal magnetohydrodynamic （MHD） stability and required power for the EAST advanced tokamak （AT） scenario with negative central shear and double transport barrier （DTB） are investigated. With the equilibrium code TOQ and stability code GATO, the ideal MHD stability is analyzed. It is shown that a moderate ratio of edge transport barriers＇（ETB） height to internal transport barriers＇（ITBs） height is beneficial to ideal MHD stability. The normalized beta/3N limit is about 2.20 （without wall） and 3.70 （with ideal wall）. With the scaling law of energy confinement time, the required heating power for EAST AT scenario is calculated. The total heating power Pt increases as the toroidal magnetic field BT or the normalized beta βN is increased.

A model of scrape-off layer （SOL）-plasma surface interaction （PSI） coupling is pre- sented for divertor operation. This model can treat the interrelation between impurity production and impurity radiation self-consistently. The model is based on a ＇two-point＇ model and a 0-D steady state impurity particle balance model. The fraction of power radiated in SOL is calcu- lated as a function of the line average density. Compared to the former simple coupling model, this model takes into account the wall-produced impurities that are sputtered by charge-exchange （CX） neutrals. A simple retention factor is also added in this model. A comparison with the experiments is made. The simulation results show the same trend upon the plasma density as shown in experiments. Reasonable qualitative agreement is reached between the results by using the model and those from experiments through the adjustment of the fitted factor.

For low single-pass absorption of ion cyclotron range frequency （ICRF） wave in the EAST plasma cavity modes are expected to be excited between the low field side （LFS） antenna and the hybrid cut-off layer. The toroidal spectrum for D（H） minority heating scenarios in EAST is modeled by using FELICE （finite elements ion cyclotron emulator）, a full wave code based on plane-stratified geometry. The excitation of cavity modes is studied. The methods for suppressing cavity modes are also discussed, to increase the efficiency of minority ion heating.

Simulation on the heating scenarios in experimental advanced superconducting tokamak （EAST） was performed by using a full wave code TORIC. The locations of resonance layers for these heating schemes are predicted and the simulations for different schemes in ICRF experiments in EAST, for example, ion heating （both fundamental and harmonic frequency） or electron heating （by direct fast waves or by mode conversion waves）, on-axis or off-axis heating, and high- field-side （HFS） launching or low-field-side （LFS） launching, etc, were conducted. For the on-axis minority ion heating of 3He in D（3He） plasma, the impacts of both density and temperature on heating were discussed in the EAST parameter ranges.

The parametric decay instabilities （PDIs） of ion Bernstein wave with different input power levels are investigated via particle-in-cell simulation. It is found that the number of decay channels increases with the input power. Resonant mode-mode couplings dominate for a low input power. With increasing the input power, the nonresonant PDIs appear to dissipate the energy of the injected wave and give rise to edge ion heating. The generated child waves couple with each other as well as the injected wave and /or act as a pump wave to excite new decay channels. As a result, the frequency spectrum is broadened with the increase of the input power.

Generation of zonal flows by small-scale drift-Alfven modes is investigated by adopting the approach of parametric instability with the electron polarization drift included. The zonal mode can be excited by primary modes propagating at both electron and ion diamagnetic drift directions in contrast to the assertion in previous studies that only primary modes propagating in the ion diamagnetic drift directions can drive zonal instabilities. Generally, the growth rate of the driven zonal mode is in the same order as that in previous study. However, different from the previous work, the growth rate is no longer proportional to the difference between the diamagnetic drift frequencies of electrons and ions.

The existence of magnetic components in geodesic acoustic modes is investigated for a weakly anisotropic tokamak plasma with dual-temperature Maxwellian distributions for ions. An m = 1 perpendicular magnetic perturbation is discovered to be proportional to the relative difference between the two temperatures in addition to an m = 2 perpendicular magnetic perturbation which always exists due to the m = 2 parallel return current, with m the poloidal mode number. The dispersion relation and the mode frequency are also modified by the anisotropic distribution.

Heat diffusion across a non-local quasi-stochastic magnetic field in tokamak plasma is numerically studied. The perturbed magnetic field is found to be a key factor in influencing effective radial heat conductivity whether the magnetic field is stochastic or not. Being different from previous work, a non-local perturbed magnetic field is used. Analytical results and numerical simulation results are compared between the conditions with a full and a quasi-perturbed stochastic field. The analytical results are found to be still consistent with numerical simulation results when the perturbed field is quasi-stochastic.
