Global population estimate and conservation gap analysis for the Nordmann's Greenshank(Tringa guttifer)

Nordmann's Greenshank(Tringa guttifer)is a globally endangered species that has received little research *** is threatened by rapid habitat loss,an incomplete network of protected sites,and lack of long-term data on population *** science data can be combined with survey data to support population estimation and conservation gap *** 2020 to 2021,Nordmann's Greenshank was surveyed in Tiaozini,Xiaoyangkou,and Dongling on the southern coast of Jiangsu Province,China,and the global population of the species was re-evaluated using the data *** integrated citizen science data from eBird and the China Bird Report from 2000 to 2020 with the survey results to identify important habitats harboring over 1%of its total population,and compared this data with existing protected areas to identify gaps in its global *** survey found that Tiaozini supported at least 1194 ***,its global population was reestimated to be ***,45 important habitats were identified based on citizen data and survey *** 44.4%and 50.0%of the priority sites in the world and China,respectively,are located outside protected areas,the Conservation Effectiveness Index(C)is 68.4%and 71.1%,respectively,showing that the current coverage of protected areas for this part of its range is *** study presents the most complete and recent population data to *** is the most important migration stopover site for Nordmann's *** species is under threat in terms of breeding,wintering,and stopover ***,we suggest improving monitoring,establishing new protected sites to complete the habitat protection network,and improving the effectiveness of existing habitat protection strategies,including further developing high tide roosting sites.

Near Range Radar and Its Application to Near Surface Geophysics and Disaster Mitigation

In this paper, we discuss about the near range radar applied to various environmental applications and disaster mitigation issues. Synthetic aperture radar（SAR） processing or migration is the key technology in near range radar imaging, which can be used in ground penetrating radar（GPR） and ground-based synthetic aperture radar（GB-SAR）. We demonstrate some applications which include GPR for humanitarian demining, GPR for archaeological survey, GB-SAR for landslide monitoring and nondestructive inspection of wooden buildings. We also demonstrate a new array GPR system “Yakumo”, which was used for archaeological survey for demonstration of advanced multi-static radar signal processing for better radar imaging.

Is China Relinquishing Manufacturing Competitiveness to Mexico in US Markets？

The present paper expands on the understanding of the competition between China and Mexico in US markets. Using the OECD International Trade by Commodity Statistics covering the period 2002-2012, we undertake both relative-market-share analysis and constant-market-share analysis. Through comparison of market share changes at both macro and micro levels, we find that on the one hand China ＂s total negative impact on Mexican manufactured exports has been greatly reduced since 2007; on the other hand, China is increasingly aligned with Mexico in terms of its competitive position over the US market, consolidating its competitiveness in high and medium-to-high technology products and gaining market share in the US market, mainly at the expense of the most advanced economies. This changingpattern suggests the intensification of competition between Mexico and China, but also a potential for cooperation, with the enhancement of bilateral intra- industry trade as a result of different technology choices and specialization paths.

Effects of diet shift on the gut microbiota of the critically endangered Siberian Crane

Wetlands worldwide have suffered from serious degradation and transformation,leading to waterbirds increasingly dependent on agricultural fields for *** gut microbiota is an essential component of host health,the impacts of agricultural feeding on gut microbial community and pathogen transmission remain poorly *** fill this knowledge gap,we used 16S rRNA sequencing to characterize the fecal bacterial community of the Siberian Crane(Grus leucogeranus),a Critically Endangered species,that recently has shifted its foraging from largely Vallisneria tubers in Poyang Lake natural wetlands to crops(i.e.,rice seeds and lotus rhizomes) in agricultural *** compared the bacterial communities between tuber foraging cranes and crop foraging *** results indicate that diet shift greatly modified the gut microbiota diversity,composition and *** foraging cranes had higher microbiota diversity than tuber foraging *** alteration in microbiota composition and function were correlated with change in food ***(i.e.,high in fiber)foraging cranes were enriched in Clostridiaceae with fiber digestion ability,and crop(i.e.,high in carbohydrate)foraging cranes were enriched in bacterial taxa and functions related to carbohydrate *** flexibility of gut microbiota might enhance Siberian Cranes’ ability to adapt to novel diet and ***,many enriched families in crop foraging cranes were pathogenic bacteria,which might increase the susceptibility of cranes to pathogenic *** caution should be taken to agricultural feeding waterbirds in Asia,where the widespread poultry-keeping in over-harvested rice fields might increase the transmission probability of pathogenetic bacteria among wild birds,domestic poultry and humans.

Throughout evolutionary history,animals are finely tuned to adjust their behaviors corresponding to environmental *** flexibility represents an important component of a species'adaptive capacity in the face of rapid anthropogenetic environmental change,and knowledge of animal behaviors is increasingly recognized in conservation *** aquatic ecosystem,variation of water depth is a key factor affecting the availability of food;thus,the foraging behaviors of many waterbirds,especially *** this study,we compared the foraging behaviors of the Scaly-sided Merganser(Mergus squamatus),an endangered migratory diving duck endemic to east Asia,in habitats with different water depths(Shallow waters:0–40 cm;Deep waters:40–300 cm),using video camera records obtained from the known wintering sites during three winters from 2018 to ***,the energy expenditure of foraging behavior profile and energy intake based on fish sizes were calculated to study the foraging *** total,200 effective video footages that contained 1086 min with 17,995 behaviors and 163 events of catching fish were *** showed that:1)time length for fishing(including eye-submerging,head-dipping,diving and food handling)of *** in shallow waters was significantly more than in deep waters;2)*** spent significantly more time for preparing(including vigilance,preening and swimming)in deep waters than in shallow waters;3)the mean catch rate was 0.28 fish/min in shallow waters,which is significantly higher than the value of 0.13 fish/min in deep waters;4)despite the distinct foraging behavior profiles and energy intakes,*** showed similar energetics in shallow and deep *** concluded that *** is a good example of behavioral flexibility that aligns with expectations of optimal foraging theory,in that it behaves in accordance to resource availability in different environments,resulting in high foraging efficiency.

Mapping the trends and prospects of battery cathode materials based on patent landscape

Advancing portable electronics and electric vehicles is heavily dependent on the cutting-edge lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery technology, which is closely linked to the properties of cathode materials. Identifying trends and prospects of cathode materials based on patent analysis is considered a kernel to optimize and refine battery related markets. In this paper, a patent analysis is performed on 6 popular cathode materials by comprehensively considering performance comparison, development trend, annual installed capacity, technology life cycle, and distribution among regions and patent assignees. In the technology life cycle, the cathode materials majorly used in electric vehicle have entered maturity stage, while the lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) cathode that is widely used in portable electronics is still in the growth stage. In global patent distributions, China holds more than 50% of total patents. In the top 10 patent assignees of 6 cathode materials, 2 institutes are from China with the rest being Japan (6) and Republic of Korea (2), indicating that the technology of cathode materials in China is relatively scattered while cathode research is highly concentrated in Japan and Republic of Korea. Moreover, the patent distribution has to consider practical issues as well as the impacts of core patents. For example, the high cost discourages the intention of applying international patents. This paper is expected to stimulate battery research, understand technical layout of various countries, and probably forecast innovative technology breakthroughs.

Habitat selection and food choice of White-naped Cranes(Grus vipio)at stopover sites based on satellite tracking and stable isotope analysis

By combining satellite tracking,land-cover extracted from Landsite 8 images,and the traditional stable isotope analysis,we studied the habitat selection and food preference of a vulnerable migratory waterbird,the Whitenaped Crane(Grus vipio),in one of its key stagging sites,the Shandian River Basin in the semi-arid northern China,to provide knowledge that is critical for its conservation in the *** results showed that the White-naped Cranes used both uplands and natural wetlands in the stopover *** the cranes used farmland and natural land cover equally as night-time roosting grounds,they spent most daytime foraging at *** the extensive usage of croplands as their foraging ground,the Bayesian mixing models based on stable isotopic analysis revealed that crop residues after harvesting,such as Maize(Zea mays)and Naked Oat(Avena chinensis),were only a small fraction of the White-naped Cranes’diet(~19%),and their diet composited mainly natural plants,such as Allium ledebourianum,Potentilla anserina,and ***,more than 20%of the total wetlands in the region were modelled as home range of the *** contrast,less than 10%of croplands and about 1%of the unused uplands were identified as home *** addition,the entire core habitats were located in natural *** findings demonstrated the importance of natural wetlands for the survival of the threatened ***,the satellite-derived land cover data showed that croplands increased rapidly in the last decade in this area,at the expense of natural *** the sharp decrease of White-naped Crane population in China,the conservation of stopover sites becomes *** on our analysis,we recommend the following management actions:conserving adequate natural wetland area,regulating anthropogenic pressures such as the use of herbicides,expanding the duration and extent of current conservation regulations,establishing a comprehensive monitoring progr

Age Identity and Elderly Job Participation in China

In the context of rising life expectancy,there is a significant discrepancy between Chinese seniors’self-perceptions of the start of old age and the expectations of society around this *** traditional paradigm,which forecasts individual economic behavior and formulates economic policies based on societal standards of age,is put to the test by this *** study,which draws from the China Longitudinal Aging Society Survey(CLASS),examines the factors,processes,and improvement strategies that affect how older people choose to *** following are our conclusions:(i)Chinese elderly believe their old age starts from 70 years on average;delaying perceived old age is a denial of aging and raises the likelihood of finding *** who are youthful at heart have a 2.4%higher chance of remaining employed than elders who are old at heart.(ii)In contrast to old-at-heart elders,young-at-heart elders are more likely to maintain their middle-age lifestyles,continue working,become motivated to engage in social activities,and gain the confidence to face challenges and continue in their career.(iii)If the perceived old age is above 70 years,the milestone event of aging is retirement from work,and there are external pressures,particularly pressures from family intergenerational support,the perception of old age will have a more proactive impact on older workers.(iv)Despite rising pension benefits,older people’s decision to remain in the workforce is still heavily influenced by their perception of their ***,this effect is notably gender-specific,as older women’s decision to remain in the workforce is not greatly influenced by their own perception of their age.

Dynamic-Analogue Correction of the Decadal Change of east asian Summer Precipitation in the Late 1990s

This paper systematically evaluates the deviations that appear in the hindcasts of the east asian summer precipitation（EASP） decadal change in the late 1990 s in two global coupled models（BCC-CGCM and BCC-CSM）.The possible causes for the deviations between the model hindcasts and observations are *** results show that the hindcasts of EASP by BCC-CGCM and BCC-CSM deviate from observations,with the anomaly correlation coefficient（ACC） being-0.01 and-0.09 for the two models,*** SST anomalies in North and West Pacific and the SST index values predicted by the two models also deviate from the observations,indicating that inconsistent SST fields may be the key factor leading to the deviation in the prediction of the EASP decadal ***,a dynamic-analogue scheme is proposed to correct the precipitation hindcasts by using SSTs,where SST and EASP are highly correlated,to select historical analogue *** validations show that the average ACC of the temporal-latitude distribution of the EASP between the corrected hindcasts and observations is 0.18 for BCC-CGCM and0.02 for BCC-CSM;both are much higher than the uncorrected *** the dynamic-analogue correction scheme in both models successfully improves prediction of the EASP decadal change in the late1990 s.
