Challenges and countermeasures for developing countries in addressing loss and damage caused by climate change

Loss and damage caused by extreme climate events have attracted increasing *** 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change(hereinafter referred to as the Convention)has agreed to adopt Loss and Damage Fund agreement,which identified the source of funding and the funds to be entrusted to the World ***,there is still ambiguous that how to allocate the funds could accelerate the effectiveness of meeting the needs for developing ***-disaster prevention and preparedness is one of the most effective measures to deal with loss and damage,which closely related to *** studies rarely analyzed quantitatively the financial needs of pre-disaster prevention and preparedness relating to adaptation to reduce loss and *** on the official reports submitted by countries under the Convention,this study analyzes the annual change in the total financial support provided by developed countries to developing countries,the proportion of pre-disaster prevention and preparedness in the adaptation needs of developing countries,and the progress in raising the current annual funding target of 100 billion USD for developed countries,to reveal the financial and technical challenges facing by developing countries on addressing loss and *** results show that by 2030,the total adaptation financial needs of developing countries are estimated to be about 3.8 trillion USD,of which pre-disaster prevention matters account for about 9%.Therefore,by 2030,developing countries will need about 342 billion USD in pre-disaster prevention and preparedness finance to withstand loss and *** addition,developing countries face a lack of technical methods to quantify information about their *** on the above analysis,this study puts forward countermeasures and suggestions,including strengthening the allocation amount of loss and damage fund on pre-disaster warning,prevention and control actions,and

The creation of controlled-release urea (CRU) is a potent substitute for conventional fertilizers in order to preserve the availability of nitrogen (N) in soil,prevent environmental pollution,and move toward green *** main objectives of this study were to assess the impacts of CRU’s full application on maize production and to clarify the connection between the nutrient release pattern of CRU and maize nutrient *** order to learn more about the effects of CRU application on maize yields,N uptake,mineral N (N_(min)) dynamics,N balance in soil-crop systems,and economic returns,a series of field experiments were carried out in 2018–2020 in Dalian City,Liaoning Province,*** were 4 different treatments in the experiments:no N fertilizer input (control,CK);application of common urea at 210 kg ha^(-1)(U),the ideal fertilization management level for the study site;application of polyurethane-coated urea at the same N input rate as U (PCU);and application of PCU at a 20% reduction in N input rate (0.8PCU).Our findings showed that using CRU (i.e.,PCU and 0.8 PCU) may considerably increase maize N absorption,maintain maize yields,and increase N use efficiency (NUE) compared to *** grain yield showed considerable positive correlations with total N uptake in leaf in U and 0.8 PCU,but negative correlations with that in PCU,indicating that PCU caused excessive maize absorption while 0.8 PCU could achieve a better yield response to N ***,PCU was able to maintain N fertilizer in the soil profile 0–20 cm away from the fertilization point,and higher N_(min)content was observed in the 0–20 cm soil layer at various growth stages,particularly at the middle and late growing stages,optimizing the temporal and spatial distributions of N_(min).Additionally,compared to that in U,the apparent N loss rate in PCU was reduced by 36.2%,and applying CRU (PCU and 0.8 PCU) increased net profit by 8.5% to 15.2% with less labor and fertilization *** was co

An index system for evaluation of agriculture green development at county level in China

agriculture green development(AGD)has become an unavoidable choice to address the unique national circumstances of *** study established a county-level AGD evaluation index system,comprised three dimensions,food production,ecological environment and socioeconomic development,using 20 *** assessment delved into historical trend and current situation,utilizing Spearman rank correlation analysis to analyze trade-off and synergy relationships,using Quzhou County,Hebei Province as a case *** main findings were in four ***,the index for AGD in Quzhou County increased by 58.9%from 1978 to *** major contribution were the social economy(65.8%)and food production(53.5%),whereas the ecological environment was found to have had a negative ***,in 2019,the AGD index was only 56.4,indicating substantial potential for improvement relative to the target value.A notable difference in scores existed between the three dimensions,with the order being ecological environment(66.3)>food production(61.7)>socioeconomic(41.3).Also,90%of the indicators did not reach the target ***,relationship analysis of the indicators revealed that the synergistic effect exceeded the trade-off ***,46.3%of the indicators had no significant relationship,35.3%had a synergistic relationship,and 18.4%had a trade-off ***,interdimensional indicator relationships exhibited a trade-off effect between the ecological environment and both food production and socioeconomic ***,a positive trend of synergy between production and ecology has emerged since *** conclusion,the quantitative evaluation index system exposed the unbalanced development and significant potential relative to the target value of AGD in Quzhou County,despite notable progress.

Sustainability Assessment of Banana (Musa spp.) Yield Gap Reduction through Value Chain development Interventions in Smallholder Farming Systems in Manicaland, Zimbabwe

This study evaluated the effectiveness of donor supported agricultural value chain development projects in sustainably narrowing yield gaps for banana smallholder farmer producers in Manicaland, Zimbabwe. The study used a mixed methods research design that relied on farmers records for the quantitative analysis and focus group discussion and in-depth interviews for key experts for the qualitative aspects. A mix of regression analysis, t-tests, Pearsons’s correlation and analysis of variance statistical methods were used for the quantitative analysis while thematic response analysis was used for the qualitative engagements. The findings showed that by the end of the activity, the project had successfully narrowed the banana yield gaps to 18.66 tons per hectare working with a potential yield base of 40 tons. However, 5 years after the project closure the yield gap had fallen to 24.7 tons indicating a lack of sustainability of yield gap reduction. However, the yield gap slump does not override the fact that farmers on average were still able to sell approximately 5 tons per every 6 months after 5 years from the project closure which is beyond any poverty threshold. This suggests genuine upward economic mobility. Additionally, in analyzing what factors had the greatest influence on yield gap reduction, the access to fertilizer ranked highest where genetics, irrigation and improved agronomy followed in that respective order. The study further showed that farmers who receive value chain development support whilst at an already commercialized state tend to maintain productivity thresholds higher in comparison to those who are at a pre commercial state. This is evidenced by the fact that the pre commercial farmers had a yield reduction of 30.83 percent after 5 years of the project closure whereas the former realized a productivity growth of 7.84%. Peri-urban areas are playing an increasingly crucial role in the agricultural development and intensification in ***-urban agriculture is highly vulnerable to change compared with urban and rural agriculture,due to its location in transitional *** of peri-urban agricultural intensity can help guide regional *** this study,we assessed the sustainability of peri-urban areas based on agricultural intensity in Karawang Regency,*** developed a village-based index to assess the region’s agricultural intensity by rescaling the village agriculture index(VAI)and combining the local sustainability index(LSI)with factor *** the unit of analysis is the village,we modified the LSI to the village sustainability index(VSI).In addition,we also developed a logical matrix analysis to determine the level of agricultural sustainability(LoAS)of each *** combined results of the three indices(VAI,VSI,and LoAS)generated information about agricultural *** results indicated that peri-urban villages with high agricultural intensity tended to exhibit low levels of social welfare,economic development,and disaster ***,high agricultural intensity did not necessarily ensure the prosperity of the ***,there was the economic disparity among the villages in the study *** diversity of agricultural intensity seems to be more critical than promoting agricultural intensity ***,this study highlights the distinctive characteristics and dynamic of peri-urban *** approaches,variables,and information regarding the combination of agricultural intensity and sustainability need to be developed as valuable tools for regional planning.

MicroRNAs play critical roles in multiple developmental processes in *** previous study showed that CRISPR/Cas9-mediated knock down of the microRNA let-7 in silkworms increased the size of larvae and silk glands,thereby improving the silk production *** this study,we elucidate the molecular mechanism underlying of let-7 regulates *** of differentially expressed genes in response to let-7 knock down revealed enrichment of pathways associated with cell proliferation and DNA ***-7 dysregulation affected the cell cycle and proliferation of the Bombyx mori cell line ***-luciferase and target site mutation assays showed that BmCDK1 is a direct target gene of let-7,with only 1 binding site on its 3′-untranslated *** interference of BmCDK1 inhibited cell proliferation,but this effect was counteracted by co-transfection with let-7 ***,let-7 knock down induced BmCDK1 expression and promoted cell proliferation in multiple tissues,and further induced endomitosis in the silk gland in *** down of BmCDK1 resulted in abnormal formation of a new epidermis,and larval development was arrested at the 2nd or 3rd molt *** together,our results demonstrated that BmCDK1 is a novel target of let-7 in cell fate determination,possessing potential for improving silk yield in silkworm.

Compared with manual sorting of citrus fruit,vision-based sorting solutions can help achieve higher accuracy and *** this study,we present a vision system based on CNN-LSTM,which can cooperate with robotic grippers for real-time sorting and is readily applicable to various citrus processing plants.A CNN-based detector was adopted to detect the defective oranges in view and temporarily classify them into corresponding types,and an LSTM-based predictor was used to predict the position of the oranges in a future frame based on image sequential *** fusion of CNN and LSTM networks enabled the system to track defective ones during rotation and identify their true types,and their future path was also predicted which is vital for predictive control of visually guided robotic *** detection accuracy of 94.1%was obtained based on experimental results,and the error for path prediction was within 4.33 pixels 40 frames *** average time to process a frame was between 28 and 62 frames per second,which also satisfied real-time *** results proved the potential of the proposed system for automated citrus sorting with good precision and efficiency,and it can be readily extended to other fruit crops featuring high versatility.

Agricultural plastics play a pivotal role in agricultural ***,due to expensive costs,agricultural plastic waste management(APWM)encounters a vast funding *** one of the crucial stakeholders,the public deserves to make appropriate efforts for ***,identifying whether the public is willing to pay for APWM and clarifying the decisions’driving pathways to explore initiatives for promoting their payment intentions are essential to address the dilemma confronting *** this end,by applying the extended theory of planned behavior(TPB),the study conducted an empirical analysis based on 1,288 residents from four provinces(autonomous regions)of northern *** illustrate that:1)respondents hold generally positive and relatively strong payment willingness towards APWM;2)respondents’attitude(AT),subjective norm(SN),and perceived behavioral control(PBC)are positively correlated with their payment intentions(INT);3)environmental cognition(EC)and environmental emotion(EE)positively moderate the relationships between AT and INT,and between SN and INT,posing significant indirect impacts on *** study’s implications extend to informing government policies,suggesting that multi-entity cooperation,specifically public payment for APWM,can enhance agricultural non-point waste management.

Shaanxi is a leading province in animal husbandry(AH)in ***,the lack of provincial information on the characteristics and utilization potential of livestock manure(LM)hinders crucial management ***,we investigated the spatiotemporal distribution,availability and biogas potential of LM in Shaanxi,and examine the carbon emission reduction potential of *** has been a 1.26-fold increase in LM quantities in Shaanxi over the past 35 years,reaching 4635.6×10^(4)t by *** was mainly concentrated in northern Shaanxi and the eastern part of *** and pig manure were the primary sources of LM,with the average LM land-load of 14.57 t·ha^(−1)in *** the overall AH in Shaanxi has not exceeded the environmental capacity,the actual scales of AH in Ankang and Hanzhong have already surpassed the respective environmental capacities,posing a higher risk of N and P *** 2021,the estimated biogas energy potential of LM was 1.2×10^(11)*** 2012 to 2021,the average carbon emission reduction potential in Shaanxi was 22%,with an average potential scale of 10%.The results of this research provide valuable data and policy recommendations for promoting the intensive use of LM and reducing carbon emissions in Shaanxi.
