Plant-based dietary patterns and risk of esophageal cancer:A prospective cohort study spanning 17 years

Objective: Plant-based diets have multiple health benefits for cancers;however, little is known about the association between plant-based dietary patterns and esophageal cancer(EC).This study presents an investigation of the prospective associations among three predefined indices of plant-based dietary patterns and the risk of ***: We performed endoscopic screening for 15,709 participants aged 40-69 years from two high-risk areas of China from January 2005 to December 2009 and followed the cohort until December 31, 2022. The overall plant-based diet index(PDI), healthful plant-based diet index(h PDI), and unhealthful plant-based diet index(u PDI), were calculated using survey responses to assess dietary patterns. We applied Cox proportional hazard regression to estimate the multivariable hazard ratios(HRs) and 95% confidence intervals(95% CIs) of EC across 3plant-based diet indices and further stratified the analysis by ***: The final study sample included 15,184 participants in the cohort. During a follow-up of 219,365person-years, 176 patients with EC were identified. When the highest quartile was compared with the lowest quartile, the pooled multivariable-adjusted HR of EC was 0.50(95% CI, 0.32-0.77) for h PDI. In addition, the HR per 10-point increase in the h PDI score was 0.42(95% CI, 0.27-0.66) for ECs. Conversely, u PDI was positively associated with the risk of EC, and the HR was 1.80(95% CI, 1.16-2.82). The HR per 10-point increase in the u PDI score was 1.90(95% CI, 1.26-2.88) for ECs. The associations between these scores and the risk of EC were consistent in most subgroups. These results remained robust in sensitivity ***: A healthy plant-based dietary pattern was associated with a reduced risk of EC. Emphasizing the healthiness and quality of plant-based diets may be important for preventing the development of EC.

Largely due to population ageing,the cancer burden from older people has been rising,which imposed considerable pressure on current Chinese healthcare *** provide comprehensive information about cancer burden of Chinese older people based on the most recent data from National Central cancer registry of *** logarithmic linear regression was used to project the current cancer burden in 2022,and Joinpoint regression was used for temporal trend analysis from 2000 to *** also estimated cancer statistics of older people in the US,Japan and the Republic of Korea for *** is estimated that 2.79 million cases and 1.94 million deaths occur for Chinese older people,representing 55.8%and 68.2%of cases and deaths in all population in *** overall cancer incidence rate gradually increased among older women,while the mortality rates declined for both ***,approximately 10.0%of all cases and 17.7%of all deaths are from people aged over 80 years,and cancer incidence and mortality in this age group showed upward trends for *** cancer and digestive cancers are the leading cancer types for Chinese older *** with other countries,China has lower incidence rates but higher mortality rates for older *** rapidly growing burden of prostate cancer,breast cancer,colorectal cancer,and declines in esophageal cancer,stomach cancer,and liver cancer among older people indicate the cancer pattern in China is being in a transition stage to that in developed *** findings imply that it should be the national health priority to meet the growing demands for cancer diagnosis,treatment and care services from the older people as the rapid population ageing in next few decades.

Efficacy of endoscopic treatment on patients with severe dysplasia/carcinoma in situ of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma: A prospective cohort study

Objective: To explore the natural history of severe dysplasia/carcinoma in situ(SD/CIS) patients and to evaluate the efficacy of endoscopic treatment to SD/CIS ***: Between January 2005 and December 2009, a population-based prospective screening program on esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC) was performed in Linzhou, China, with endoscopic screening plus iodine staining. All the eligible histologically confirmed SD/CIS patients were followed up through the door-todoor follow-up and local cancer registry. The endpoint was diagnosed as ESCC or the December 31 st, ***-Meier survival analysis and Log-rank test were used to compare the survival rates among treated and untreated ***: A total of 175 SD/CIS patients were enrolled and grouped by whether they received endoscopic treatment. Eleven-year cumulative incidence rates for untreated and treated SD/CIS patients were 10.7% [95%confidence interval(95% CI): 6.9-16.1] and 3.2%(95% CI: 1.4-7.0), respectively. The ESCC incidence free survival rate, and all-cause incidence and mortality free survival rates were all significantly higher in the treated patients vs. untreated patients(P=0.043, P=0.008 and P=0.015, respectively). The ESCC mortality free survival rate showed no significant differences between the two groups(P=0.847).Conclusions: The cumulative incidence rate of SD/CIS patients to ESCC was much lower than previously reported. The Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that endoscopic treatment could increase the ESCC and allcause disease-free survival rates of SD/CIS patients significantly.

Objective： Laryngeal cancer is the common cancer of the upper aerodigestive tract. We aimed to use the national cancer registration data in 2011 to estimate the incidence and mortality of laryngeal cancer within China. Methods： Comparable, high-quality data from 177 population-based cancer registries were qualified for analysis. The pooled data were stratified by area, sex and age group. National new cases and deaths of laryngeal cancer were estimated using age-specific rates and national population in 2010. All incidence and death rates were age-standardized to the 2000 Chinese standard population and Segi＇s population, which were expressed per 100,000 populations. Results： All 177 cancer registries covered a total of 175,310,169 population （98,341,507 in urban and 76,968,662 in rural areas）, accounting for 13.01% of the national population. The data quality indicators of proportion of morphological verification （MV%）, percentage of cancer cases identified with death certification only （DCO%） and mortality to incidence ratio （Mr/） were 77.98%, 2.62% and 0.55, respectively. Estimated 20,875 new cases of laryngeal cancer were diagnosed and 11,488 deaths from laryngeal cancer occurred in China in 2011. The crude incidence rate of laryngeal cancer was 1.55/100,000 （2.69/100,000 in males and 0.35/100,000 in females）. Age-standardized incidence rates by Chinese standard population （ASIRC） and by world standard population （ASIRW） were 1.13/100,000 and 1.14/100,000, respectively. Laryngeal cancer is much rarer in females than in males. The incidence rate was higher in urban areas than that in rural areas. The crude mortality rate of laryngeal cancer was 0.85/100,000 （1.42/100,000 in males and 0.25/100,000 in females）. Age-standardized mortality rates by Chinese standard population （ASMRC） and by world standard population （ASMRW） were both 0.61/100,000. Objective： The National Central cancer registry （NCCR） collected population-based cancer registration data in 20l 1 from all cancer registries. National cancer incidence and mortality were compiled and cancer incident new cases and cancer deaths were estimated. Methods： In 2014, there were 234 cancer registries submitted cancer incidence and deaths occurred in 2011. All datasets were checked and evaluated based on the criteria of data quality from NCCR. Total 177 registries＇ data were qualified and compiled for cancer statistics in 2011. The pooled data were stratified by area （urban/rural）, gender, age group （0, 1-4, 5-9, 10-14...85＋） and cancer type. cancer incident cases and deaths were estimated using age-specific rates and national population in 2011. All incidence and death rates are age-standardized to the 2000 Chinese standard population and Segi＇s population expressed per 100,000 persons. Results： All 177 cancer registries （77 in urban and 100 in rural areas） covered 175,310,169 populations （98,341,507 in urban and 76,968,662 in rural areas）. The morphology verified cases （MV%） accounting for 70.14% and 2.44% of incident cases were identified through death certifications only （DCO%） with mortality to incidence ratio of 0.63. The estimates of new cancer incident cases and cancer deaths were 3,372,175 and 2,113,048 in 2011, respectively. The incidence rate was 250.28/100,000 （males 277.77/100,000, females 221.37/100,000）, and the age-standardized incidence rates by Chinese standard population （ASIRC） and by world standard population （ASIRW） were 186.34/100,000 and 182.76/100,000 with the cumulative incidence rate （0-74 years old） of 21.20%.
