Schistosomiasis,one of the 17 neglected tropical diseases listed by the World Health Organization,presents a substantial public health and economic *** the 261 million people requiring preventive chemotherapy for schistosomiasis in 2013,92%of them lived in sub-Saharan Africa and only 12.7%received preventive ***,in 2010,the WHO reported that schistosomiasis mortality could be as high as 280000 per year in Africa *** May 2012 delegates to the sixty-fifth World Health Assembly adopted resolution WHA65.21 that called for the elimination of schistosomiasis,and foresees the regular treatment of at least 75%of school age children in at-risk *** resolution urged member states to intensify schistosomiasis control programmes and to initiate elimination campaigns where *** this,in June 2015,schistosomiasis was indicated to have the lowest level of preventive chemotherapy implementation in the spectrum of neglected tropical *** was also highlighted as the disease most lacking in *** is perhaps unsurprising,given that it was also the only NTD with access to drug donations but without a coalition of stakeholders that collaborates to boost commitment and *** a consequence,and to ensure that the WHO NTDs Roadmap Targets of 2012 and World Health Assembly Resolution WHA65.21 are met,the Global Schistosomiasis Alliance(GSA)has been set *** and representative,the GSA aims to be a partnership of endemic countries,academic and research institutions,international development agencies and foundations,international organizations,non-governmental development organizations,private sector companies and advocacy and resource mobilisation ***,the GSA calls for a partnership to work for the benefit of endemic countries by addressing health inequity and rural poverty.

Coastal medicine is a promising field for research and drug development,because several natural products isolated from marine organisms have been found to be therapeutically useful in a clinical *** comparison to terrestrial products,the merit of marine compounds arises from the diversity in their chemical structure and unique bioactivity.A recently discovered marine compound,xyloketal B,displays neuroprotective and antioxidative effects in in-vitro and in-vivo experimental *** elicits these beneficial effects through mitochondrial protection,free radical scavenging,reducing reactive oxygen species production and suppressing apoptotic *** addition,unpublished data from our lab revealed that transient receptor potential melastatin 7 channel activity,implicated in a myriad of neurodegenerative diseases,was inhibited following xyloketal B *** this review,the therapeutic effect of xyloketal B will be evaluated based on existing evidence and its potential for drug development will be also discussed.

Background:The prevalence of skin diseases and diabetes mellitus(DM)are prominent around the *** current scope of knowledge regarding the prevalence of skin diseases and comorbidities with type 2 DM(T2DM)is limited,leading to limited recognition of the correlations between skin diseases and ***:We collected 383 subjects from the Da Qing Diabetes Study during the period from July 9th to September 1st,*** subjects were categorized into three groups:Normal glucose tolerance(NGT),impaired glucose tolerance(IGT),and *** prevalence and clinical characteristics of skin diseases were recorded and ***:In this cross-sectional study,383 individuals with ages ranging from 53 to 89-year-old were *** overall prevalence of skin diseases was 93.5%,and 75.7%of individuals had two or more kinds of skin ***,there were 47 kinds of comorbid skin diseases in patients with T2DM,of which eight kinds of skin diseases had a prevalence>10%.The prevalence of skin diseases in NGT,IGT,and T2DM groups were 93.3%,91.5%,and 96.6%,respectively;stratified analysis by categories showed a statistically significant difference in"disturbances of pigmentation"and"neurological and psychogenic dermatoses".The duration of T2DM also significantly associated with the prevalence of"disturbances of pigmentation"and"neurological and psychogenic dermatoses".Subsequently,the prevalence of"disturbances of pigmentation"was higher in males than females in NGT(P<0.01)and T2DM(P<0.01)*** addition,the difference in the prevalence of"disturbances of pigmentation"was also significant in NGT and T2DM groups(P<0.01).Conclusions:There was a high prevalence of skin diseases in the Da Qing Diabetes *** address the skin diseases in the Da Qing Diabetes Study,increased awareness and intervention measures should be implemented.

Co-contaminants of microplastics in two seabird species from the canadian Arctic

Through ingestion and subsequent egestion, Arctic seabirds can bioaccumulate microplastics at and around their colony breeding sites. While microplastics in Arctic seabirds have been well documented, it is not yet understood to what extent these particles can act as transport vehicles for plastic-associated contaminants, including legacy persistent organic pollutants(POPs), trace metals, and organic additives. We investigated the occurrence and pattern of organic and inorganic co-contaminants of microplastics in two seabird species from the canadian Arctic—northern fulmar(Fulmarus glacialis) and black-legged kittiwake(Rissa tridactyla). We found that fulmars had higher levels of plastic contamination and emerging organic compounds(known to be plastic additives) than kittiwakes, whereas higher concentrations of legacy POPs were found in kittiwakes than the fulmars. Furthermore, fulmars,the species with the much larger foraging range(～200 km), had higher plastic pollution and overall contaminant burdens, indicating that birds may be acting as long-range transport vectors for plasticassociated pollution. Our results suggest a potential connection between plastic additive contamination and plastic pollution burdens in the bird stomachs, highlighting the importance of treating plastic particles and plastic-associated organic additives as co-contaminants rather than separate pollution issues.

The major human bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa causes multidrug-resistant infections in people with underlying immunodeficiencies or structural lung diseases such as cystic fibrosis(CF).We show that a few environmental isolates,driven by horizontal gene acquisition,have become dominant epidemic clones that have sequentially emerged and spread through global transmission networks over the past 200 years.
