Light weighting opportunities and material choice for commercial vehicle frame structures from a design point of view

This paper focuses on an estimation of light weighting opportunities for the frame structure of com- mercial road vehicles. This estimation is based on simpli- fied static load cases which play a predominant role for the dimensioning of a frame structure and therefore these simplifications are not putting the general validity of the conclusions into question. A comparison of different ma- terials under this scenario shows that light metals do not show any weight reduction advantage in comparison to steel while a material-independent topology optimization has more weight reduction potential for the frame structure than a simple change of materials. Considering the con- straints of part complexity which is directly linked with production and assembly cost, the ladder frame structure has become the current state of the art design. Thus the paper also puts a spotlight on basic rules of node design and vertical load induction in order to keep the weight of such a design as low as possible. Practical examples from manufacturers show that the weight of a commercial vehicle could be reduced by 10%, and main parts of the frame structure could be reduced by 30% using high strength steel in combination with innovative production methods like roll forming.

Strategies for Achieving Sustainable Logging Rate in the Brazilian Amazon Forest

Data of increment of the remnant trees after logging, ingrowth and mortality was obtained by assessment before logging and after 6 years, two sites of 50 ha, in Amazon forest. Logging scenarios were simulated to identify the logging rate potential for each studying site, by diameter class projection method. The cycle of 35 years and the logging rate of 30 ***-1 exceed the time required for recovery in the primary forest, in the studied site. The simulation showed that in the studying area, a well-planned logging, with minimum logging damage would be possible to implement an initial cycle of 25 years to the forest to recover 30 ***-1, if 50% of the timber stock were reserved. The forest increment, beyond important factors such as the increase of individual species, is quite dependent on the remnant trees.

Reinforced concrete structure durability has been getting a lot of attention in academic research related to building security and ***,knowledge about the condition of the structures,particularly those affected by issue symptoms,is a powerful tool to minimize costs and improve structural reinforcement and repair service *** corrosion in reinforced concrete frames is the most frequent pathological manifestation in buildings around the world,and it is closely linked to the concept of structural integrity and *** paper describes,explains and remarks on the services performed by a company specialized in structure pathology in determining the causes,origins and mechanisms involved in steel corrosion in reinforced concrete frames in the ground and mezzanine floors of a building located in the coastal city of Cabedelo/***,physical,chemical and electrochemical tests were conducted in the structure,and the conclusion was that concrete carbonation was the mechanism behind the pathological manifestation,and the source of the issue was linked to the execution of the *** therapy process adopted was divided into levels related to the degree and progress in the observed degradation,and a few structural repair techniques were adopted,such as traditional structure repair,chemical realkalinization,corrosion inhibition and surface protection.
