Adsorptive removal of iron and manganese ions from aqueous solutions with microporous chitosan/polyethylene glycol blend membrane

Microporous chitosan （CS） membranes were directly prepared by extraction of poly（ethylene glycol）（PEG） from CS/PEG blend membrane and were examined for iron and manganese ions removal from aqueous solutions. The different variables affecting the adsorption capacity of the membranes such as contact time, pH of the sorption medium, and initial metal ion concentration in the feed solution were investigated on a batch adsorption basis. The affinity of CS/PEG blend membrane to adsorb Fe（II） ions is higher than that of Mn（II） ions, with adsorption equilibrium achieved after 60 min for Fe（II） and Mn（II） ions. By increasing CS]PEG ratio in the blend membrane the adsorption capacity of metal ions increased. Among all parameters, pH has the most significant effect on the adsorption capacity, particularly in the range of 2.9-5.9. The increase in CS/PEG ratio was found to enhance the adsorption capacity of the membranes. The effects of initial concentration of metal ions on the extent of metal ions removal were investigated in detail. The experimental data were better fitted to Freundlich equation than Langmuir. In addition, it was found that the iron and manganese ions adsorbed on the membranes can be effectively desorbed in 0.1 mol/L HCl solution （up to 98% desorption efficiency） and the blend membranes can be reused almost without loss of the adsorption capacity for iron and manganese ions.

Anaerobic digestion for waste water poultry manure by UBF reactor

In this experiment the performance of UBF process treatment for wastewater chicken manure was tested under the condition of constant temperature of 35℃ and the volume of UBF is 4 liters. The experiment covered two stages: the first was start up with phase I and phase II, the second was steady state. The following results average of operation period were obtained: (1) During the period of start up phase I operation the biogas production rate 0.39v/(***) at the volumetric COD loading rate of 2.97 kg COD/(m 3.d) with COD removal 76.85% and hydraulic retention time of 10.04 hours and phase II the biogas production rate 3.86 v/(***) at the volume loading rate 11.69 kg COD/(m 3.d) have been achieved with COD removal 82.47% and HRT 16.45 hours. UBF process had resistance to the quantitative shock load. (2) During the steady state operation, the biogas production rate 9.83v/(***) at loading rate of 28.85 kg COD/(m 3.d) and COD removal efficiency 80.03% and hydraulic retention time of 18.73 hours have been achieved for this reactor. The operation of UBF reactor was very stable.

Heavy smoking and liver

Smoking causes a variety of adverse effects on organs that have no direct contact with the smoke itself such as the liver. It induces three major adverse effects on the liver: direct or indirect toxic effects, immunological effects and oncogenic effects. Smoking yields chemical substances with cytotoxic potential which increase necroinflammation and fibrosis. In addition, smoking increases the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1, IL-6 and TNF-α) that would be involved in liver cell injury. It contributes to the development of secondary polycythemia and in turn to increased red cell mass and turnover which might be a contributing factor to secondary iron overload disease promoting oxidative stress of hepatocytes. Increased red cell mass and turnover are associated with increased purine catabolism which promotes excessive production of uric acid. Smoking affects both cell-mediated and humoral immune responses by blocking lymphocyte proliferation and inducing apoptosis of lymphocytes. Smoking also increases serum and hepatic iron which induce oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation that lead to activation of stellate cells and development of fibrosis. Smoking yields chemicals with oncogenic potential that increase the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with viral hepatitis and are independent of viral infection as well. Tobacco smoking has been associated with supression of p53 (tumour suppressor gene). In addition, smoking causes suppression of T-cell responses and is associated with decreased surveillance for tumour cells. Moreover, it has been reported that heavy smoking affects the sustained virological response to interferon (IFN) therapy in hepatitis C patients which can be improved by repeated phlebotomy. Watershed Delineation and Estimation of Groundwater Recharge for Ras Gharib Region, Egypt

The present work tried to estimate the runoff discharge and groundwater recharge volumes for the catchments of Ras Gharib area using the Soil Conservation Service curve number (SCS-curve number) and the water balance methods. The two methods were selected among other methods used by hydrologists due to simplicity and popularity for application in arid and semi-arid areas like Egypt. The watershed delineation and streamlines for Ras Gharib region have been accomplished using ArcMap 10 GIS and the 1-arc second DEM which demonstrated three basins in the study area. The rainfall data points nearby the study area, extracted from the TRMM data, have been used as input for the Log-Pearson III distribution in order to calculate the design storm for different return periods (100, 50, 25, and 10 years). The results of applying the SCS model estimated the runoff depths as 19.86, 8.00, 2.32, and 0.06 mm for the different return periods, respectively. The total surface runoff volumes reached the study area are 34.78, 14.02, 4.07, and 0.11 Mm3, respectively for the selected return periods, whereas the total groundwater recharge volumes for the selected storm return periods are 58.16, 31.34, 18.14, 3.18 Mm3, respectively.

Effect of pulse drip irrigation and mulching systems on yield, quality traits and irrigation water use efficiency of soybean under sandy soil conditions

Two field experiments were carried out during growing seasons 2010 and 2011, it executed in research farm of national research center in Nubaryia region, Egypt to study the effect of pulse drip irrigation and mulching systems for saving water, increasing and improving yield of soybean. The study factors were, pulse drip irrigation technology (adding of daily water requirements on 4 times, 8 times, 12 times compared with adding of daily water requirements on 1 time) and mulching systems (covering the soil with black plastic mulch “BPM”, rice straw mulch “RSM” and the control treatment was soil surface without mulch “WM”). The following parameters were studied to evaluate the effect of pulse drip irrigation and mulching systems: 1) Soil moisture distribution in root zone, 2) Growth characters of soybean plant, 3) Yield of soybean, 4) Irrigation water use efficiency of soybean “IWUE soybean”, and 5) Oil content and oil yield, 6) Protein content and protein yield, 7) Economical parameter. According to the economical view and the results of statistical analysis for effect of pulse drip irrigation and mulching systems on yield, quality traits and IWUE soybean indicated that, applying the irrigation requirements on 8 pulses/day with using BPM is the best conditions because under these conditions was occurred the highest value of yield, quality traits and IWUE soybean and there was significant deference between this case and other treatments. Where, pulse irrigation technique increase from water movement in horizontal direction than vertical direction hence improve from soil moisture distribution and wetted soil volume in root zone and using BPM decrease from evaporation process rate from soil surface hence decreasing of salts accumulation in addition to decreasing of weed growth in the root zone. All traits at AIR on 12 pulses/ day are decreased by increasing of pulses, this may be due to irrigation water was very small with every pulse at AIR on 12 pulses/day in addition

The Incidence of Myocardial Diastolic Dysfunction in Patients with Decompensated liver Disease

Introduction: There is a debate about whether the occurrence is of systolic, diastolic dysfunction, or both in patients with liver cirrhosis. Aim of the work was to investigate the diastolic and systolic function changes prevalence in Acute decompensated on top of chronic liver disease. Patients and methods: The studywas performed on three hundred patients with Hepatitis C virus (HCV) associated liver cirrhosis;patients with a history of cardiac disease were excluded from the study about complete liver function tests. Abdominal ultrasound and echo-doppler were done for all patients and control. They were subdivided according to compensation into two groups: Group A was 150 patients with Compensated liver Cirrhosis Disease (child A), and Group B was 150 patient with Decompensate liver Cirrhosis (child B & C) and Control group of twenty, with no hepatic abnormality and no cardiac dysfunction. Echocardiography was done to all patients to detect left ventricular end diastolic diameter (LVEDD), left ventricular end systolic diameter (LVESD), ejection fraction (EF%) and E/A ratio to detect the presence of diastolic dysfunction. Results: In this study, reversed E/A ratio as an indicator for diastolic dysfunction was found in 120 (40%) patients while patients had standard E/A rate was 180 (60%). E/A ratio decreased and decreased in the LVESD and EF% in patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis more than those with compensated liver cirrhosis. Conclusion: Decompensated liver cirrhosis is associated with diastolic and systolic dysfunctions.

Preparation and Properties of a New Carbon Paste Iron Selective Electrodes and Their Applications

The new ferrous-selective modified carbon paste electrodes (I and II) based on 5,5’-(propane-1,3-diylbis(sulfanediyl))bis(3-benzyl-4H-1,2,4-triazol-4-amine) (electrode I, A-ionophore) and 5,5’-(butane-1,4-diyl-bis(sulfane- diyl))bis(3-benzyl-4H-1,2,4-triazol-4-amine) (electrode II, B-ionophore) as ionophores are described. These electrodes exhibit Nernstian slopes of 30.2 ± 0.5 and 29.1 ± 0.5 mV·decade-1, linear range of 1.0 × 10-7 - 1.0 × 10-2 mol·L-1 Fe(II) ion and detection limit of 1.0 × 10-7 mol·L-1 Fe(II) ion for electrode (I) and electrode (II), respectively. Both electrodes (I and II) have a fast response time of about 15 sand can be used for at least 3 months. The two electrodes revealed a good selectivity for Fe(II) over a wide variety of other metal ions and could be used in the pH range of 1.8 - 3.0 without any divergence in potential. The proposed sensors were successfully applied for the determination of Fe(II) ion in different real samples.

Antioxidant Properties of Fermented Camel Milk Prepared Using Different Microbial Cultures

This study investigated the effect of using different combinations of commercial starter culture and lactobacilli strains on the antioxidant properties of fermented camel milk for 14 days. The bacterial strains included Lb. casei subsp. casei B-1922, Lb. paracasei subsp. paracasei B-4560, Lb. rhamnosus B-442 and Lb. rhamnosus B-1445. The antioxidant activity of fermented milk was estimated using DPPH radical scavenging activity, ferrous ion chelating activity (FCA) and ferric reducing power assays. The total phenolic content (TPC), titratable acidity, proteolysis degree and sensory acceptability of samples were also evaluated. The results showed that all the studied parameters were affected by both the type of starter culture and storage. Samples containing the commercial starter and Lb. rhamnosus B-1445 had the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity and TPC throughout storage. Fermented milks prepared using the commercial starter and Lb. rhamnosus B-442 or Lb. paracasei retained their high FCA and reducing power throughout storage compared to the other samples. Fermented milk containing the commercial starter and Lb. casei showed the lowest antioxidant activity. The DPPH scavenging activity for all fermented milks decreased sharply during storage, while the change in FCA, reducing power and TPC differed among the samples during storage. The highest acidity was observed in the samples containing the commercial starter and Lb. paracasei, while fermented milk prepared using commercial starter and Lb. rhamnosus B-1445 had the lowest acidity. Samples containing the commercial starter and Lb. casei had the greatest proteolysis during the first week of storage, while samples containing the commercial starter and Lb. rhamnosus B-1445 had the highest proteolysis on day 14. Fermented milks with commercial starter and Lb. rhamnosus B-1445 or Lb. paracasei were the most acceptable products, while samples containing the commercial starter and Lb. casei were less acceptable.

Partial Characterization of Thrombin Inhibitor(s) Derived from Salivary Glands of the Tick, <i>Hyalomma dromedarii</i>, and Related Anti-Cancer Potential

A long-term blood feeder, like the Hyalomma dromedarii tick, requires extended control over all hemostatic defense mechanisms generated by the host during feeding, including blood coagulation. To overcome this, ticks have evolved numerous molecules that target proteases in the blood coagulation cascade. New insights into the role of clotting factors in the development and progression of cancer have identified anticoagulant treatment as a potential therapeutic approach. In this context, the present work assessed the anticoagulation activities of crude and fractionated salivary gland extract (SGE) prepared from semi-fed H. dromedarii females. Additionally, the antitumor effects of the potent anti-thrombin fractions were determined against colon cancer (Caco-2) and normal skin (HFB4) cells. Crude SGE significantly prolonged clotting time in prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) and thrombin time (TT) assays and inhibited thrombin in FII-activity assay. Using anion-exchange chromatography, the fractions that strongly inhibited thrombin (3.A4 and 3.A5) were eluted. Both fractions prolonged the aPTT and TT clotting times and reduced the activity of FII significantly. The protein profiles of both fractions indicated the presence of a single polypeptide band of about 99 kDa. Regarding anti-cancer potential of the tested fractions, Caco-2 cells showed reduced viability with obvious morphological changes, induced apoptosis and a reduced level of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). G2/M cell cycle arrest was observed only in 3.A5-treated cells. No cytotoxic effects were observed in HFB4 cells. These results demonstrated the potential of tick-derived anticoagulants, specifically thrombin inhibitors, as effective tools in colorectal cancer treatment.
