How Can Practitioners support Citizen Volunteers in Disaster Risk Reduction? Insight from “Good and Ready” in Aotearoa New Zealand

Global and national policy frameworks emphasize the importance of people's participation and volunteers' role in disaster risk reduction. While research has extensively focused on volunteers in disaster response and recovery, less.a.tention has been paid on how organizations involved in disaster risk management can support volunteers in leading and coordinating communitybased disaster risk reduction. In 2019, the New Zealand Red cross piloted the Good and Ready initiative in Auckland,Aotearoa New Zealand, with the objective to empower local people in resilience building with a focus on volunteers.a.d community participation. This research examined the positive and negative outcomes of Good and Ready and investigated volunteers' experiences in the disaster resilience initiative. It involved the codesign of a questionnaire-based survey using participatory methods with Good and Ready volunteers, the dissemination of the survey to gather volunteers' viewpoints, and a focus group discussion with participatory activities with Red cross volunteers. The findings highlight that a key challenge lies in finding a balance between a program that provides flexibility to address contextual issues.a.d fosters communities' ownership, versus.a.prescriptive and s.a.dardized approach that leaves little room for creativity and self-initiative. It pinpoints that supporting volunteers with technical training is critical but that soft skills training such as coordinating, communicating,or facilitating activities.a. the local level are needed. It concludes that the sus.a.nability of Good and Ready requires unders.a.ding and meeting volunteers' motivations.a.d expectations.a.d that enhancing partnerships with local emergency management agencies would strengthen the program.

Modification of streamer-to-leader transition model based on radial thermal expansion in the sphere-plane gap discharge at high altitude

Historically,streamer-to-leader transition studies mainly focused on the rod-plane gap and low altitude analysis,with limited attention paid to the sphere-plane gap at high altitude *** this work,sphere-plane gap discharge tests were carried out under the gap dis.a.ce of 5 m at the Qinghai Ultra High Voltage(UHV)test base at an altitude of 2200 *** experiments measured the physical parameters such as the discharge current,electric field intensity and ins.a.taneous optical *** duration of the dark period and the critical charge of streamer-toleader transition were obtained at high *** on radial thermal expansion of the streamer stem,we es.a.lished a modified streamer-to-leader transition model of the sphere-plane gap discharge at high altitude,and calculated the stem temperature,stem radii and the duration of streamer-to-leader *** with the measured duration of sphere-plane electrode discharge at an altitude of 2200 m,the error rate of the modified model was 0.94%,while the classical model was 6.97%,demonstrating the effectiveness of the modified *** the comparisons.a.d analysis,several suggestions.a.e proposed to improve the numerical model for further quantitative investigations of the leader inception.

Multi-Criteria Wildfire Risk Hazard Assessment in GIs Environment: Projection for the Future and Impact on REs Projects Ins.a.lation Planning

It is.a.arming for the fact that Wildfires number, severity and consequently impact have significantly increased during the last years, an aftermath of the Climate Change. One of the most affected areas worldwide is Mediterranean, due to the unique combination of its type of vegetation and demanding climatic conditions. This research is focused on the Region of Epirus in Greece, an area with significant natural vegetation and a range of geomorphological aspects. In order to estimate the Wildfire Risk Hazard, several factors have been used: geomorphological (slope, aspect, elevation, TWI, Hydrographic network), social (settlements.a.d landfils, roads, overhead lines.a.d subs.a.ions), environmental (land cover) and climatic (Fire Weather Index). Through a multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) and an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) in a GIs environment, the Wildfire Risk Hazard has been estimated not only for current conditions but also for future projections for the near future (2031-2060) and the far future (2071-2100). The selected case study includes the potential impact of the Wildfires to the ins.a.led (or targeted to be ins.a.led) REs projects in the studied region.

CYP3A5 unexpectedly regulates glucose metabolism through the AKT-TXNIP-GLUT1 axis in pancreatic cancer

Development and validation of a novel non-invasive test for diagnosing nonalcoholic fatty liver dis.a.e in Chinese children

With the exploding prevalence of obesity,many children are at risk of developing nonalcoholic fatty liver *** anthropometric and laboratory parameters,our study aimed to develop a model to quantitatively evaluate liver fat content(LFC)in children with *** A well-characterized cohort of 181 children between 5 and 16 years of age were recruited to the study in the Endocrinology Department as the derivation *** external validation cohort comprised 77 *** assessment of liver fat content was performed using proton magnetic resonance *** and laboratory metrics were measured in all subjects.B-ultrasound examination was carried out in the external validation *** Krus.a.-Wallis test,spearman bivariate correlation analyses,univariable linear regressions.a.d multivariable linear regression were used to build the optimal predictive *** The model was based on indicators including alanine aminotransferase,homeos.a.is model assessment of insulin resis.a.ce,triglycerides,waist circumference and Tanner *** adjusted R^(2)of the model was 0.589,which presented high sensitivity and specificity both in internal[sensitivity of 0.824,specificity of 0.900,area under curve(AUC)of 0.900 with a 95%confidence interval:0.783–1.000]and external validation(sensitivity of 0.918 and specificity of 0.821,AUC of 0.901 with a 95%confidence interval:0.818–0.984).Conclusions Our model based on five clinical indicators was simple,non-invasive,and inexpensive;it had high sensitivity and specificity in predicting LFC in ***,it may be useful for identifying children with obesity who are at risk for developing nonalcoholic fatty liver dis.a.e.

Dynamic propagation velocity of a positive streamer in a 3 m air gap under lightning impulse voltage

streamers represent an important s.a.e in the initiation of gap discharge. In this work, we used an eight-frame intensified charge-coupled device camera to capture the streamer development process when a lightning impulse voltage of 95%–100% U50% was.a.plied in a 3 m rod–plate gap and the streamer velocity was.a.alyzed. Analysis of the observations shows that streamer velocity can be defined by three s.a.es: rapid velocity decline(s.a.e 1), rapid velocity rise(s.a.e 2)and slow velocity decline(s.a.e 3). The effects of electrode s.a.e, applied voltage and gap breakdown or withs.a.ding on streamer velocity were analyzed. The electrode with a larger radius of curvature will result in a higher initial velocity, and a higher voltage amplitude will cause the streamer to propagate faster at s.a.e 3. Gap withs.a.ding or breakdown has no obvious effect on streamer velocity. In addition, the experimental results.a.e compared with previous results.a.d the s.a.istical characteristics of the primary streamer discharge are discussed.
