Currently,a lot of effort is being put on designing complex detectors.A number of simulation and reconstruction frameworks and applications have been developed with the aim to make this job easier.A very important role in this activity is played by the geometry description of the detector apparatus layout and its working ***,no real common approach to represent geometry data is available and such data can be found in various forms starting from custom semi-structured text files,source code (C/C++/FORTRAN),to XML and database *** XML(Extensible Markup Language)has proven to provide an interesting approach for describing detector geometries,with several different but incompatible XML-based solutions ***,interoperability and geometry data exchange among different frameworks is not possible at *** article introduces a markup language for geometry *** aim is to define a common approach for sharing and exchanging of geometry description *** requirements and design have been driven by experience and user feedback from existing projects which have their geometry description in XML.

The Standard Model in Particle Physics has been able to make many predictions confirmed later with a flow of experimental results. With the discovery of the Higgs boson at the LHC, one is full of admiration for the people contributing to this model fifty years ago and its predictions that have been confirmed gradually. The original particle quark constituent model has evolved with the deep inelastic experiments to a quark and gluons system, then to a more general system with virtual quarks. This work is the result of observations while working at cern in Geneva with many different experiments at the ISR, SPS, LEP, LHC colliders. A new model based on nuons is introduced, that allows accurate evaluations of the particle masses (mesons and baryons) and magnetic moment, computes very accurately the kinematics distributions for particles and jets observed in the p-p collisions at the LHC (elastic and inelastic) and at lower energy machines. This new model looks at a first glance in contradiction with the quark model because it can build the elementary particles with nuons only, i.e. electrons and neutrinos. However, all the existing physics involved in electron, positron and neutrino interactions may be used to explain interactions between composite particles such as protons or heavy ions.

The COMPASS experiment at cern is starting data taking in summer 2001,The COMPASS off-line framework(CORAL)will use the cern Conditions Data Base(CDB)to handle time dependent quantities like calibration constants and data from the slow control *** describe the use of the CDB within CORAL and the fullscale performance tests on the COMPASS Computing Farm(CCF),The CDB has been interfaced to the SCADA PVSS slow control *** continuously transfer all the data to the CDB and make them available to the users,We describe this interface,a feasibility study performed using mock data and we predict the expected performance.

The neutron Time Of Flight (nTOF) facility at cern is a high flux spallation neutron source commissioned in Nov 2000 and APr *** the commissioning phases an innovative multipurpose DAQ system was developed and *** system is capable of handling high data rated(10Mb/s) with the use of the National Instruments PCI-VXI interface board to communicate with the VME *** graphical user interface is based on Java^TM and ROOT allowing immediate visualization of the data and providing a flexible way of creating configurations for various experimental setups.

Predicted Modulated Differential Rates for Direct WIMP Searches at Low Energy Transfers

The calculation of the distance from cern to Gran Sasso involves the combination of three independent sets of measurements: the calculation of the distance between pillars included in the geodetic reference network at cern and the Lab Nationale Gran Sasso(LNGS);and the transfer on each site of coordinates,from the geodetic surface network,underground into the tunnel or experiment hall *** transfer of coordinates,from the surface,underground at the two sites was not done as part of the CNGS *** survey concerns for the project were directed towards the orientation of the beamline from cern to LNGS to within 00 ***-theodolite measurements underground were planned at cern so a transfer would effectively only translate the target *** the precision estimated for previous transfers,it was decided not to undertake expensive and timeconsuming measurements campaigns for a negligible gain in *** only GPS measurements at the two sites were carried *** Opera results which raised questions about the speed at which neutrinos travelled,increased interest in the calculated distance between the two *** spite of the estimated distance precision,two measurement campaigns to establish the link between the surface network and the underground networks were undertaken,together with further GPS *** of these campaigns,with comparisons to the initial values,and revised estimates of the distance will be given.
