Genome-wide SNP markers provided insights into the reproductive strategy and genetic diversity of the green tide causative species Ulva prolifera in China

Ulva prolifera is the causative species of the annually occurring large-scale green tides in China since *** specific biological features on reproductivity strategies,as well as intra-species genetic diversity,are still largely unknown,especially at the genome level,despite their importance in understanding the formation and outbreak of massive green *** the present study,the restriction site-associated DNA genotyping approach(2b-RAD)was adopted to identify the genome-wide single-nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs)of 54 individual thalli including samples collected from Subei Shoal in 2019 and Qingdao coast from 2019 to *** genotype results revealed that most of the thalli in 2019 and 2020 were haploid gametophytes,while only half of the thalli were gametophytes in 2021,indicating flexibility in the reproductive strategies for the formation of the green tides among different years and the dominance of asexual and vegetative reproductive mode for the floating ***,population analysis was conducted,and it revealed a very low genetic diversity among samples from Subei Shoal and the Qingdao coast in the same year and a higher divergence among samples in different *** results showed the efficiency of 2b-RAD in the exploration of SNPs in *** and provided the first genome-wide scale evidence for the origin of the large-scale green tides on the Qingdao *** study improved our understanding of the reproductive strategy and genetic diversity of the green tide causative species and will help further reveal the biological causes of the green tide in China.

Comparative transcriptomic analysis of ovary and testis reveals sex-related genes in roughskin sculpin Trachidermus fasciatus

The mechanisms underlying sex determination and differentiation have long intrigued researchers in the fields of development and evolutionary biology. The roughskin sculpin(Trachidermus fasciatus Heckel), displaying sexual dimorphism, provides an ideal model for studying the ***, both genetic and genomic information concerning sex determination and differentiation, such as gonadal transcriptome data in roughskin sculpin, are lacking. Here, we present the first gonadal transcriptomes of roughskin sculpin and identify sex-related genes. We identified 8 531 differentially expressed genes(DEGs), among them 4 065 were upregulated in the ovary and 4 466 upregulated in the testis. Several sex-related gene ontology(GO) terms were enriched in ovary-biased genes, including “binding of sperm to zona pellucida”, “egg coat formation”, “positive regulation of acrosome reaction”,“cell division”, and “cell cycle”, while the GO terms such as “spermatogenesis”, “sperm axoneme assembly”, “cilium assembly”, “cilium movement”, and “cilium movement involved in cell motility”were enriched in testis-biased genes. Moreover, six KEGG pathways were significantly enriched in the ovary, whereas only one was enriched in the testis. Of these DEGs, 40 sex-related genes were identified,which including 26 testis-biased genes(such as Dmrtb1, Gsdf, Sox9b, Wnt4b, Tcp11l2, and Efhb), and 14ovary-biased genes(such as Cyp19a1a, Foxh1, Foxr1, Gdf3, Hsd17b12, and Igf2bp3). This gonadal transcript dataset would broaden our understanding of sex determination and differentiation mechanisms in roughskin sculpin, expand the genomic database, support future studies on sex-related gene functions,and facilitate molecular biology research into roughskin sculpin.

Effects of Ocean Acidification on Nitrogen Metabolism of Skeletonema costatum

Ocean acidification（OA）, caused by the rising concentration of atmospheric CO2, leads to changes in the marine carbonate system. This, in turn, affects the physiological processes of phytoplankton. In response to increased p CO2levels, marine microalgae modulate their physiological responses to meet their energy and metabolic requirements. Nitrogen metabolism is a critical metabolic pathway, directly affecting the growth and reproductive capacity of marine microorganisms. Understanding the molecular mechanisms that regulate nitrogen metabolism in microalgae under OA conditions is therefore crucial. This study aimed to investigate how OA affects the expression profiles of key genes in the nitrogen metabolic pathway of the marine diatom Skeletonema costatum. Our findings indicate that OA upregulates key genes involved in the nitrogen metabolic pathway, specifically those related to nitrate assimilation and glutamate metabolism. Moreover, p CO2has been identified as the predominant factor affecting the expression of these genes, with a more significant impact than pH variations in S. costatum. This research not only advances our understanding of the adaptive mechanisms of S. costatum in response to OA but also provides essential data for predicting the ecological consequences of OA on marine diatoms.

Total-factor energy efficiency of ten major global energy-consuming countries

Improving energy efficiency is regarded as a key path to tackling global warming and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs).In 2020,the energy consumption of the world's ten major energy-consuming countries accounted for 66.8%of the global *** paper applied data envelopment analysis(DEA)to calculate these ten major energyconsuming countries'total-factor energy efficiency(TFEE)at national and sectoral levels from 2001-2020,and explored the infuencing factors of total-factor energy efficiency with the Tobit regression *** results showed significant difference in the ten countries'energy *** United States and Germany topped the list for total-factor energy efficiency,while China and India were at the ***,the energy efficiency of the industrial subsector has increased significantly over the past two decades,while that of the other subsectors has been relatively *** industrial structure upgrading,per capita GDP,energy consumption structure,and foreign direct investment had significant impacts on energy efficiency with national *** consumption structure and GDP per capita were determinative factors of energy efficiency.

Taxonomy of Two New Peritrich Ciliates(Protozoa:Ciliophora)from Inland Saltwaters of China

The inland saltwater lakes harbor exceptional ***,two new species of solitary sessile peritrich ciliates were isolated from Qinghai Lake,the largest inland saltwater lake in *** morphology,ciliature,silverline system,and molecular phylogeny were investigated based on live observation,silver staining,and analysis of the small subunit ribosomal DNA(SSU rDNA).Vorticella paraglobosa *** characterized mainly by its obconical or elongate bell-shaped zooid,C-shaped macronucleus,single ventrally located contractile vacuole,two-rowed infundibular polykinety 3,and 28-38 silverlines between peristome and aboral tro-chal band and 10-15 between aboral trochal band and *** cotyliformis *** from its congeners mainly by its double-layered peristomial lip,cup-shaped zooid,J-shaped macronucleus,single ventrally positioned contractile vacuole,three-rowed infundibular polykinety 3,and 70-85 silverlines between peristome and aboral trochal band and 21-25 between aboral trochal band and *** SSU rDNA sequences of the two new species were obtained,and the subsequent molecular phylogenetic analysis supported their taxonomic classification.

Glycine-β-cyclodextrin-assisted cometabolism of phenanthrene and pyrene by Pseudomonas stutzeri DJP 1 from marine sediment

Cometabolic degradation is currently an effective and extensively way to remove high molecular weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(HMW-PAHs).Unfortunately,due to low bio-accessibility and high biotoxicity,the cometabolic degradation rate of HMW-PAHs is ***-β-cyclodextrin(GCD)was obtained through amino modification ofβ-cyclodextrin(BCD)and added to cometabolic system of phenanthrene(PHE)and pyrene(PYR)to assist PYR *** show that the addition of GCD(100 mg/L)effectively improved the removal rate of PYR(20 mg/L)by 42.3%.GCD appeared to increase the bio-accessibility and reduce the biotoxicity of PHE and PYR,and then promoted the growth of Pseudomonas stutzeri DJP1 and stimulated the elevation of dehydrogenase(DHA)and catechol 12 dioxygenase(C12O)*** phthalate metabolic pathway was accelerated,which improved the cometabolic *** study provided a new reference for the cometabolic degradation of HMW-PAHs.

Conductive and stable polyphenylene/CNT composite membrane for electrically enhanced membrane fouling mitigation

Nanocarbon-based conductive membranes, especially carbon nanotube (CNT)-based membranes, have tremendous potential for wastewater treatment and water purification because of their excellent water permeability and selectivity, as well as their electrochemically enhanced performance (e.g., improved antifouling ability). However, it remains challenging to prepare CNT membranes with high structural stability and high electrical conductivity. In this study, a highly electroconductive and structurally stable polyphenylene/CNT (PP/CNT) composite membrane was prepared by electropolymerizing biphenyl on a CNT hollow fiber membrane. The PP/CNT membrane showed 3.4 and 5.0 times higher electrical conductivity than pure CNT and poly(vinyl alcohol)/CNT (PVA/CNT) membranes, respectively. The structural stability of the membrane was superior to that of the pure CNT membrane and comparable to that of the PVA/CNT membrane. The membrane fouling was significantly alleviated under an electrical assistance of −2.0 V, with a flux loss of only 11.7% after 5 h filtration of humic acid, which is significantly lower than those of PP/CNT membranes without electro-assistance (56.8%) and commercial polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes (64.1%). Additionally, the rejection of negatively charged pollutants (humic acid and sodium alginate) was improved by the enhanced electrostatic repulsion. After four consecutive filtration-cleaning cycle tests, the flux recovery rate after backwashing reached 97.2%, which was much higher than those of electricity-free PP/CNT membranes (67.0%) and commercial PVDF membranes (61.1%). This study offers insights into the preparation of stable conductive membranes for membrane fouling control in potential water treatment applications.

Long-Chain Alkenones in the South Yellow Sea Sediments and Their Indicative Significance for Haptophytes Species

Long-chain alkenones（Lcas） have been widely used as important biomarkers in palaeoceanographic ***,the commonly used Lcas proxies are mainly based on C37alkenones,and it is still lack of the studies about the distribution and indications of Lcas with different chain lengths other than ***,the composition and distribution of Lcas were analyzed in surface sediments from the southern Yellow Sea（SYS） and a sedimentary core（A02-C） from the central Yellow Sea（YS）mud *** results showed that C37,C38and C39alkenones were the major Lcas in surface sediments of the SYS,and the relative contents of C38:2Et,C37:2Me,C37:3Me,C38:2Me,C38:3Et,C38:3Me,C39:2Et and C39:3Et were 18.3%-59.8%,22.6%-41.2%,7.4%-23.0%,6.6%-15.4%,3.8%-13.3 %,3.6%-8.7%,2.8%-6.0% and 0.7%-3.0%,*** the relationships of U38MeK-U38EtKand U37K'-U38EtKindicate that Lcas are mainly derived from Emiliania huxleyi（***）.High ratios of total C37alkenones to total C38alkenones(K37/K38)（1-1.2） were found in the central SYS,corresponding to the relatively high abundance of ***;while low ratios of K37/K38（0.7-0.9） were observed at nearshore area of the SYS where Gephyrocapsa oceanica（***） has relatively high *** spatial distribution of K37/K38ratio is also consistent with that of coccolithophores nannofossil in the *** addition,K37/K38ratio in core A02-C varied from 0.7 to 1.1 with a gradual decreasing trend during the past 5.5 *** suggests that the relative abundance of *** decreased gradually,caused by the changes in the Yellow Sea Warm Current（YSWC） and the East Asian Winter Monsoon（EAWM） during this period.
