To eat or get heat： Behavioral trade-offs between thermoregulation and feeding in gregarious necrophagous larvae

The thermoregulation behavior ofLucilia sericata larvae （Diptera： calliphori- dae）, a necrophagous species that feeds on vertebrate cadavers, was investigated. These larvae require high heat incomes to develop, and can elevate temperatures by forming large aggregates. We hypothesized that L. sericata larvae should continue to feed at temperatures up to 38 ℃, which can be reached inside larval masses. Thermal regulation behavior such as movement between a hot food spot and colder areas was also postulated. The hypotheses were tested by tracking for 1 h the activity of single, starved third instar larvae in a Petri dish containing 1 food spot （FS） that was heated to a constant temperature of 25 ℃, 34 ℃ or 38 ℃ with an ambient temperature of 25 ℃. The influence of previous conspecific activity in the food on larval behavior was also tested. The crops of larvae were dissected to monitor food content in the digestive systems. Based on relative crop measurements, larvae fed at all food temperatures, but temperature strongly affected larval behavior and kinematics. The total time spent by larvae in FS and the duration of each stay decreased at high FS temperature. Previous activity of conspecifics in the food slightly increased the time spent by larvae in FS and also decreased the average distance to FS. Therefore, necrophagous L. sericata larvae likely thermoregulate during normal feeding activities by adjusting to local fluctuations in temperature, particularly inside maggot masses. By maintaining a steady internal body temperature, larvae likely reduce their development time.

Experimental investigation of mean flow velocity and pressure inside the vane-island type diffuser passage of a test centrifugal pump model is presented.A directional three-hole probe was used to investigate hub-to-shroud flow properties at diffuser leading and trailing edge planes.In addition,the mid-section between suction and pressure sides along the diffuser passage was also studied.All these measurements were performed at five different flow conditions.The flow structures at the inlet section of the diffuser and along with the passage were analyzed in detail,with a focus on the flow distribution and the pressure recovery evolution of different diffuser parts.Blockage and distortion effects were analyzed by using existing published particle image velocimetry(PIV)measurements in the outer part of the impeller and around the diffuser throat in order to get a better understanding of the overall performances and local flow structures of such a diffuser design.The results show that back flows occur on the shroud region from impeller exit plane up to the semi-vaneless part of the diffuser at low flow rates.Aerodynamic blockage effects combining with blade thickness geometrical blockage tend to diminish the effects of theoretical high positive incidence.For high flow rates,negative incidence effects induce high local velocity on the pressure side of the diffuser just after the throat.Existing aerodynamic blockage associated with low flow distortions are found to have a beneficial effect on pressure recovery for low flow rates.On the contrary,high flow distortions are found for increased flow rates,resulting in a low pressure recovery inside the semi-vane less part of the diffuser and after the throat.

Atomic devices such as atomic clocks and optically-pumped magnetometers rely on the interrogation of atoms contained in a cell whose inner content has to meet high standards of purity and accuracy.Glass-blowing techniques and craftsmanship have evolved over many decades to achieve such standards in macroscopic vapor cells.With the emergence of chip-scale atomic devices,the need for miniaturization and mass fabrication has led to the adoption of microfabrication techniques to make millimeter-scale vapor cells.however,many shortcomings remain and no process has been able to match the quality and versatility of glass-blown cells.here,we introduce a novel approach to structure,fill and seal microfabricated vapor cells inspired from the century-old approach of glass-blowing,through opening and closing single-use zero-leak microfabricated valves.These valves are actuated exclusively by laser,and operate in the same way as the“make-seals”and“break-seals”found in the filling apparatus of traditional cells.Such structures are employed to fill cesium vapor cells at the wafer-level.The make-seal structure consists of a glass membrane that can be locally heated and deflected to seal a microchannel.The break-seal is obtained by breaching a silicon wall between cavities.This new approach allows adapting processes previously restricted to glass-blown cells.It can also be extended to vacuum microelectronics and vacuum-packaging of micro-electro-mechanical systems(MEMS)devices.

This paper introduced a novel microstructure-based constitutive model designed to comprehensively characterize the intricate mechanical behavior of anisotropic clay rocks under the influence of water saturation.The proposed model encompasses elastoplastic deformation,time-dependent behavior,and induced damage.A two-step homogenization process incorporates mineral compositions and porosity to determine the macroscopic elastic tensor and plastic yield criterion.The model also considers interfacial debonding between the matrix and inclusions to capture rock damage.The application of the proposed model is demonstrated through an analysis of callovo-Oxfordian clayey rocks,specifically in the context of radioactive waste disposal in France.Model parameters are determined,followed by numerical simulations of various laboratory tests including lateral decompression tests with constant mean stress,triaxial compression tests under different water saturation conditions,and creep tests.The numerical results are compared with corresponding experimental data to assess the efficacy of the proposed model.

This study centers on the use of smart technology to improve the lifecycle management of underground facilities.It presents a comprehensive digital solution that addresses the challenges of underground facilities,particularly those related to the extensive use of underground space,as well as the requirements for safety,sustainability,and quality of services.The proposed solution emerged from discussions with experts,companies,and cities involved in the design,construction,and management of underground facilities.In this paper,we first discuss the major challenges of underground facilities,then,we present the development of a smart solution to address these challenges.This study demonstrates a promising perspective for the use of smart technology in the optimal management of underground facilities,and paves the way for its implementation.

Biflavonoids are divided in two classes:c-c type compounds represented by the dimeric compound amentoflavone and c-O-c-type compounds typified by hinokiflavone(hNK)with an ether linkage between the two connected apigenin units.This later sub-group of bisflavonyl ethers includes hNK,ochnaflavone,delicaflavone and a few other dimeric compounds,found in a variety of plants,notably Selaginella species.A comprehensive review of the anticancer properties and mechanism of action of hNK is provided,to highlight the anti-proliferative and anti-metastatic activities of hNK and derivatives,and hNK-containing plant extracts.The anticancer effects rely on the capacity of hNK to interfere with the ErK1-2/p38/NFκB signaling pathway and the regulation of the expression of the matrix metalloproteinases MMP-2 and MMP-9(with a potential direct binding to MMP-9).In addition,hNK was found to function as a potent modulator of pre-mrNA splicing,inhibit-ing the SuMO-specific protease SENP1.As such,hNK represents a rare SENP1 inhibitor of natural origin and a scaffold to design synthetic compounds.Oral formulations of hNK have been elaborated to enhance its solubility,to facilitate the compound delivery and to enhance its anticancer efficacy.The review shed light on the anticancer potential of c-O-c-type biflavonoids and specifically on the pharmacological profile of hNK.This compound deserves further attention as a regu-lator of pre-mrNA splicing,useful to treat cancers(in particular hepatocellular carcinoma)and other human pathologies.

In view of the long stagnation in traditional turbulence modeling,researchers have attempted using machine learning to augment turbulence models.This paper presents some of the recent progresses in our group on augmenting turbulence models with physics-informed machine learning.We also discuss our works on ensemble-based field inversion to provide training data for constructing machine learning models.Future and on-going research efforts are introduced.

development of multifunctional and high-performance silicone aerogel is highly required for various promising applications.however,unstable cross-linking structure and poor thermal stability of silicone network as well as complicated processing restrict the practical use significantly.herein,we report a facile and versatile ambient drying strategy to fabricate lightweight,wide-temperature flexible,super-hydrophobic and flame retardant silicone composite aerogels modified with low-content functionalized graphene oxide(FGO).After optimizing silane molecules,incorporation ofγ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane functionalization is found to promote the dispersion stability of GO during the hydrolysis-polymerization process and thus produce the formation of unique strip-like co-cross-linked network.consequently,the aerogels containing∼2.0 wt%FGO not only possess good cyclic compressive stability under strain of 70%for 100 cycles and outstanding mechanical reliability in wide temperature range(from liquid nitrogen to 350℃),but also display excellent flame resistance and super-hydrophobicity.Further,the optimized silicone/FGO aerogels display exceptional thermal insulating performance superior to pure aerogel and hydrocarbon polymer foams,and they also show efficient oil absorption and separation capacity for var-ious solvents and oil from water.clearly,this work provides a new route for the rational design and development of advanced silicone composite aerogels for multifunctional applications.

In this paper,porous partially fluorinated graphene(PFG)for supercapacitors(Scs)was fabricated by a mild and secure one-pot hydrothermal method utilizing weakly coordinating anion BF_(4)^(-) as the fluorine source.The hydrolysis rate of sodium fluoroborate was adjusted by controlling the reaction temperature and PFG containing semi-ionic c-F bonds was obtained,where the content of semi-ionic c-F bonds in PFG can be easily regulated.The final experimental results show that the incorporation of fluorine not only modulates the electrochemical properties of the material,but also creates abundant pores.When assembled in a symmetric supercapacitor,the PFG shows a high specific capacitance of 269.7 F g^(-1) at 1 A g^(-1) and a superior rate capability with 89.3%capacitance retained,as the current density is increased from 1 A g^(-1)even to 20 A g^(-1).Furthermore,the resultant energy density for PFG is 9.4 Wh kg^(-1) at a power density of 250.0 W kg^(-1)(1 A g^(-1)).All these results confirm that as-prepared partially fluorinated graphene is appropriate for the application in Scs and mass production.
