Introduction: Surgical problems are of much disturbance to the world and should therefore be given serious attention. The prevalence of these surgical problems, has made plastic surgery become a broadly relevant and acceptable way for addressing problems like injuries, congenital anomalies, surgical infections and malignancies among others. Aim: This study is to quantify and characterize surgical procedures done in the plastic surgery theatre located in the new Accident and Emergency (A & E) Building of KATH. Materials and Methods: Data were obtained from the Operation Register/Theatre Books in the plastic surgery theatre at the A & E Centre on cases operated on from October 1, 2009 to September 30, 2012. Data entry, presentation and analysis were done using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 20.0 version. Results: Adults formed the majority of patients who sought for plastic surgery with a percentage of 70.3%. The male patients also outnumbered the females recording (61.5%) out of the total number of patients. Most of the cases recorded were acquired cases (93.2%). Reconstructive surgery was the commonest operation performed (30%);in 53.8% cases general anaesthesia was used. Conclusion: Among all the procedures used reconstructive surgery was the commonest surgery performed in the unit and general anaesthesia was the most type of anaesthesia used for the operations.

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death in Asian and African countries due to a high prevalence of chronic hepatitis B infections(1,2).The vast majority of current studies focus on the treatment of HCC itself rather than complications from HCC.A potentially life-threatening complication of HCC is spontaneous rupture,and its prevalence has been reportedly to be 5-15%of all HCC cases(1).This is the third leading cause of HCC-related death after tumor progression and liver failure,and there is a high mortality associated with rupture(3,4).

Background Mass burn casualties are always a great challenge to a medical team because a large number of seriously injured patients were sent in within a short time. Usually a high mortality is impending. Experiences gained from successful treatment of the victims may be useful in guiding the care of mass casualties in an armed conflict. Methods Thirty-five burn victims in a single batch, being transferred nonstop by air and highway from a distant province were admitted 48 hours post-injury. All patients were male with a mean age of （22.4±8.7） years. The burn extent ranged from 4% to 75% （（13.6±12.9）%） total body surface area. Among them, thirty-two patients were complicated by moderate and severe inhalation injury, and tracheostomy had been performed in 15 patients. Decompression incisions of burn eschar on extremities were done in 17 cases before transportation. All the thirty-five patients arrived at the destination smoothly via 4-hour airlift and road transportation. Among them, twenty-five patients were in critical condition. Results These thirty-five patients were evacuated 6 hours from the scene of the injury, and they were transferred to a local hospital for primary emergency care. The patients were in very poor condition when admitted to our hospital because of the severe injury with delayed and inadequate treatment. Examination of these patients at admission showed that one patient was suffering from sepsis and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. Dysfunction of the heart, lung, liver, kidney, and coagulation were all found in the patients. Forty-eight operations were performed in the 23 patients during one month together with comprehensive treatment, and the function of various organs was ameliorated after appropriate treatment. All the 35 patients survived. Conclusions A well-organized team consisting of several cooperative groups with specified duties is very important. Silver-containing preparations are widely used in the management of skin wounds, but the effects of silver ions on skin wound healing remain poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of silver ions （Ag^＋） on the proliferation of human skin keratinocytes （HaCaT） and the production of intracellular reactive oxygen species （ROS）. After treating HaCaT cells with Ag^＋ and/or the active oxygen scavenger N-acetyl cysteine （NAC）, cell proliferation and intracellular ROS generation were assessed using CCK-8 reagent and DCFH-DA fluorescent probe, respectively. In addition, 5-bromo-2-deoxyUridine （BrdU） incorporation assays, cell cycle flow cytometry, and proliferating cell nuclear antigen （PCNA） immunocytochemistry were conducted to further evaluate the effects of sub-cytotoxic Ag^＋ concentrations on HaCaT cells. The proliferation of HaCaT cells was promoted in the presence of 10^-6 and 10^-5s mol/L Ag^＋at 24, 48, and 72 h. Intracellular ROS generation also significantly increased for 5 60 min after exposure to Ag^＋ The number of BrdU-positive cells and the presence of PCNA in HaCaT cells increased 48 h after the addition of 10^-6 and 10^-5 mol/L Ag^＋, with 10^-5 mol/L Ag^＋ markedly increasing the cell proliferation index. These effects of sub-cytotoxic Ag^＋ concentrations were repressed by 5 mmol/L NAC. Our results suggest that sub-cytotoxic Ag^＋ concentrations promote the proliferation of human keratinocytes and might be associated with a moderate increase in intracellular ROS levels. This study provides important experimental evidence for developing novel silver-based wound agents or dressings with few or no cytotoxicity.

Tec family kinases, which include tyrosine kinase expressed in hepatocellular carcinoma (TEC), Bruton's tyrosine kinase (BTK), interleukin (IL)-2-inducible T-cell kinase (ITK), tyrosine-protein kinase (TXK), and bone marrow tyrosine kinase on chromosome X (BMX), are the second largest group of non-receptor tyrosine kinases and have a highly conserved carboxyl-terminal kinase domain. BMX was identified in human bone marrow cells, and was demonstrated to have been expressed in myeloid hematopoietic lineages cells, endothelial cells, and several types of cancers. Significant progress in this area during the last decade revealed an important role for BMX in inflammation and oncologic disorders. This review focuses on BMX biology, its role in inflammation and possible signaling pathways, and the potential of selective BMX inhibitors.

Background: European studies of paediatric foot burns report scalds as the leading cause. Mechanisms of injury are different in warmer climates. We sought to characterize the mechanisms and outcomes of isolated foot burns in our population. Methods: Retrospective review of a prospectively collected database of all children aged 0–15 years presenting to a Queensland paediatric burns centre over a 26-month period. Non-parametric analyses such as the Mann-Whitney U and Pearson Chi-square were used. Results: There were 218 children with foot burns treated over a period of 2 years and 2 months of which 214 had complete records. There were significantly more boys than girls (n=134, 62.6% cf. n=80, 37.4%, pburns were a minority but were significantly deeper (p=0.03) and significantly more likely to require grafting (p=0.04) and scar management (pburns. Conclusions: In our population, contact burns are the most common mechanism of injury causing burns to the feet. The leading aetiology is campfire burns, which account for one-third of all burns to the feet. Prevention campaigns targeted at this population could significantly reduce the burden of morbidity from these burns. Friction, flame and chemical burns constitute a minority of patients but are deeper and more likely to require skin grafting and scar management.
