Clinical Efficacy of acupuncture on the Morphine-related Side Effects in Patients Undergoing Spinal-epidural Anesthesia and Analgesia

Objective： To investigate the effects of acupuncture on the morphine-related side effects （nausea, vomiting, itchiness and gastrointestinal disorders） in patients undergoing anesthesia and analgesia and try to find the clinical mechanism of acupuncture. Methods： Patients scheduled to have transurethral prostatic resection enrolled in the study （69 patients）, characterized as Grade Ⅱ or Ⅲ by the American society of Anesthesiologists physical status classification, were randomly assigned to three groups, 23 patients in each group： the placebo group （control group）, non-anesthesia area （NAA） group, and the anesthesia area （AA） group. After spinal anesthesia, all patients received Patients Controlled Epidural Analgesia. The vital signs, bowel sounds, visual analogue scales, itchiness, nausea and vomiting, and time for first exhaust post operation were observed. Results： Altogether, nine cases were eliminated, three in each group. Finally, sixty cases completed this study, twenty in each group. There was a significant decrease of bowel sounds after morphine spinal anesthesia in the three groups. Compared with the control or AA group, the bowel sound recovered after acupuncture, the incidences of nausea and vomiting, itchiness, and time for first exhaust after operation decreased in the NAA group （P〈0.05）. There was a significant decrease of the incidence for itchiness in the NAA group compared with the control group （P〈0.05）. Conclusions： On the basis of this study, it is obviously seen that acupuncture could decrease the incidence of morphine-related side effects （nausea and vomiting, itchiness and gastrointestinal disorders） when the spinal cord conduct is normal. However, it decreases only the incidence of itchiness but not for gastrointestinal dysfunction when the spinal cord is blocked.

It is known that social stress could alter oxytocin(OT)and arginine-vasopressin(AVP)expression in specific regions of brains which regulate the aggressive behavior of small rodents,but the effects of density-induced social stress are still ***’s voles(Lasiopodomys brandtii)are small herbivores in the grassland of China,but the underlying neurological mechanism of population regulation is still *** tested the effects of housing density of Brandt’s voles on OT/AVP system with physical contact(allowing aggression)and without physical contact(not allowing aggression)under laboratory ***,we tested the effects of paired-aggression(no density effect)of Brandt’s voles on OT/AVP system under laboratory *** hypothesized that high density would increase aggression among animals which would then increase AVP but reduce OT in brains of *** results showed that high housing density induced more aggressive *** found high-densityinduced social stress(with or without physical contact)and direct aggression significantly increased expression of mRNA and protein of AVP and its receptor,but decreased expression of mRNA and protein of OT and its receptor in specific brain regions of *** results suggest that density-dependent change of OT/AVP systems may play a significant role in the population regulation of small rodents by altering density-dependent aggressive behavior.

Validity of the Neck Meridian Test as a Measure of Stress

The neck meridian test is a procedure in which the participant is requested to stretch the neck in four directions and rate the intensity of pain felt and/or symptoms. The total score of the four responses has been shown to correlate with the level of perceived stress, and it has been suggested that it may be possible to use this test as a measure of perceived stress. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of experimentally induced stress on the neck meridian test score. It was predicted that the neck meridian test score would increase only in participants who were exposed to stress manipulation. The participants were 19 male and 9 female college students (age, 34.1 ± 9.37 years) majoring in acupuncture and moxibustion medicine. The participants were randomly assigned to a stress group and a control group. All participants were requested to rest for 3 min and then complete the neck meridian test. Subsequently, they were administered a stress questionnaire. The participants in the stress group were instructed to prepare mentally for 3 min for a small 1-min examination that included performance in front of a judge, while those in the control group were requested to rest for additional 3 min. After each period, the participants completed the neck meridian test and were administered a stress questionnaire. The stress score increased significantly only in the stress group, indicating that the experimental protocol was a valid means of inducing a stressed state. The neck meridian test score also increased only in the stress group, providing supporting evidence that the neck meridian test is a valid tool for assessing perceived stress. It is suggested that the test could be used in future studies applying techniques of acupuncture and moxibustion medicine to stress care.

We consider the Cauchy problem for the energy critical heat equation ■ in dimension n = 5. More precisely we find that for given points q_1, q_2,..., q_k and any sufficiently small T > 0 there is an initial condition u0 such that the solution u(x, t) of(0.1) blows-up at exactly those k points with rates type Ⅱ, namely with absolute size ～(T-t)^(-α) for α >3/4. The blow-up profile around each point is of bubbling type, in the form of sharply scaled Aubin–Talenti bubbles.

Interplay between intestinal alkaline phosphatase, diet, gut microbes and immunity

Intestinal alkaline phosphatase(IAP) plays an essential role in intestinal homeostasis and health through interactions with the resident microbiota, diet and the gut. IAP's role in the intestine is to dephosphorylate toxic microbial ligands such as lipopolysaccharides, unmethylated cytosine-guanosine dinucleotides and flagellin as well as extracellular nucleotides such as uridine diphosphate. IAP's ability to detoxify these ligands is essential in protecting the host from sepsis during acute inflammation and chronic inflammatory conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease. Also important in these complications is IAP's ability to regulate the microbial ecosystem by forming a complex relationship between microbiota, diet and the intestinal mucosal surface. Evidence reveals that diet alters IAP expression and activity and this in turn can influence the gut microbiota and homeostasis. IAP's ability to maintain a healthygastrointestinal tract has accelerated research on its potential use as a therapeutic agent against a multitude of *** IAP has been shown to have beneficial effects when administered during ulcerative colitis,coronary bypass surgery and *** are currently a handful of human clinical trials underway investigating the effects of exogenous IAP during sepsis,rheumatoid arthritis and heart *** light of these findings IAP has been marked as a novel agent to help treat a variety of other inflammatory and infectious *** purpose of this review is to highlight the essential characteristics of IAP in protection and maintenance of intestinal homeostasis while addressing the intricate interplay between IAP,diet,microbiota and the intestinal epithelium.

Flotation of Xinhua molybdenite using sodium sulfide as modifier

The feasibility of using sodium sulfide as the sole modifier for the flotation of Xinhua molybdenite ore was *** potential mechanisms involved in the different flotation systems were *** comparative flotation results reveal that in the kerosene-sodium silicate flotation system,better recovery and grade of the molybdenum are obtained using sodium sulfide as the slurry pH adjustment agent than using *** the optimal conditions(64 g/t kerosene and 6 kg/t Na2S),satisfied recovery and grade of molybdenite concentrate can be achieved(84%and 8.2%,respectively),indicating that sodium sulfide is a potential substitute modifier of sodium *** open-circuit flotation test results further confirm the effectiveness of sodium sulfide which may render recycling the tailing water possible and make the flotation process more environmental acceptable and more economical due to the less use of kerosene and scavengers.

The joint European Space Agency and Chinese Academy of Sciences Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer(SMILE)mission will explore global dynamics of the magnetosphere under varying solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field conditions,and simultaneously monitor the auroral response of the Northern Hemisphere *** these large-scale responses with medium and fine-scale measurements at a variety of cadences by additional ground-based and space-based instruments will enable a much greater scientific impact beyond the original goals of the SMILE ***,we describe current community efforts to prepare for SMILE,and the benefits and context various experiments that have explicitly expressed support for SMILE can offer.A dedicated group of international scientists representing many different experiment types and geographical locations,the Ground-based and Additional Science Working Group,is facilitating these *** include constructing an online SMILE Data Fusion Facility,the discussion of particular or special modes for experiments such as coherent and incoherent scatter radar,and the consideration of particular observing strategies and spacecraft *** anticipate growing interest and community engagement with the SMILE mission,and we welcome novel ideas and insights from the solar-terrestrial community.

Li Ruqian, the Lu Xun of the Nineteenth Century

This paper discusses the biography, thought, and works of Li Ruqian （1852-19o9）. He was appointed Consul in Kobe 1882-84, during which period he studied the political institutions and culture of Meiji Japan and the West, eventually translating Washington Irving＇s biography of George Washington into Classical Chinese, a book which exercised a great influence on late Qing reformers. Li＇s literary theory strongly emphasized the importance of originality. He also cultivated a style that was simpler and closer to spoken Chinese than many of his contemporaries. He eventually espoused a thoroughgoing reform of Chinese government and society. He abandoned the idea of the centrality of Chinese culture for a worldview of cultural relativity in which all cultures of the world are viewed as equally valid. After his return to China Li became even more involved in reform activities, but soon he became almost totally alienated from Chinese society and even began expressing strong doubts about the whole tradition of classical writing. In his poems and prose works, he warned Chinese intellectuals to abandon their smug conservatism and adapt to the new world or perish, making fun of his own society in biting satirical pieces that remind one of the writings of Lu Xun＇s May Fourth era. Li Ruqian may, indeed, be the first Chinese author to develop the idea of Chinese inadequacy and guilt which is so common in the literature of the next century.
