Sieving carbons promise practical anodes with extensible low-potential plateaus for sodium batteries

Non-graphitic carbons are promising anode candidates for sodium-ion batteries, while their variable and complicated microstructure severely limits the rational design of high-energy carbon anodes that could accelerate the commercialization of sodium-ion batteries, as is the case for graphite in lithium-ion ***, we propose sieving carbons, featuring highly tunable nanopores with tightened pore entrances, as high-energy anodes with extensible and reversible low-potential plateaus(<0.1 V). It is shown that the tightened pore entrance blocks the formation of the solid electrolyte interphase inside the nanopores and enables sodium clustering to produce the plateau. Theoretical and spectroscopic studies also show that creating a larger area of sodiophilic pore surface leads to an almost linearly increased number of sodium clusters, and controlling the pore body diameter guarantees the reversibility of sodium cluster formation,producing a sieving carbon anode with a record-high plateau capacity of 400 mAh g–1. More excitingly, this approach to preparing sieving carbons has the potential to be scalable for modifying different commercial porous carbons.

Presbyopia corrections traditionally have been approached with attempts to exchange power,either at the cornea or the lens planes,inducing multifocality,or altering asphericity to impact the optical *** that affect the visual axis,such as spectacle and contact lens correction,refractive surgeries,corneal onlays and inlays,and intraocular lenses are typically unable to restore true accommodation to the presbyopic *** aim is instead to enhance‘pseudoaccommodation’by facilitating an extended depth-of-focus for which vision is *** is a true lack of technology that approaches presbyopia from a treatment based or therapy based solution,rather than a‘vision correction’solution that compromises other components of the optical *** surgical procedures seek to restore true accommodation combined with pseudoaccommodation and have several advantages over other more invasive options to treat *** the theoretical justification of scleral surgical procedures remains controversial,there has nevertheless been increasing interest and evidence to support scleral surgical and therapeutic approaches to treat *** progress in scleral surgery techniques and understanding of the mechanisms of action have been achieved since the 1970s,and this remains an active area of *** this article,we discuss the historic scleral surgical procedures,the two scleral procedures currently available,as well as an outlook of the future for the scleral surgical space for treating presbyopia.

Plasticity,strength,permeability and compressibility characteristics of black cotton soil stabilized with precipitated silica

The suitability of using precipitated silica(PS) from the burning of rice husk was investigated to improve the geotechnical engineering properties of a black cotton soil. A laboratory experimental program consisting of series of specific gravity, Atterberg limits, compaction, California bearing ratio(CBR), unconfined compression and consolidation tests was conducted on the untreated and PS treated soil samples. The application of PS to the soil significantly changed its properties by reducing its plasticity and making it more workable, improving its soaked strength, and increasing its permeability and the rate at which the soil gets consolidated. An optimal PS content of 50%, which provided the highest soaked strength, is recommended for the improvement of the subgrade characteristics of the BC soil for use as a pavement layer material.

Flow of Oldroyd-B fluid with nanoparticles and thermal radiation

The two-dimensional boundary layer flow of an Oldroyd-B fluid in the presence of nanoparticles is investigated. Convective heat and mass conditions are considered in the presence of thermal radiation and heat generation. The Brownian motion and thermophoresis effects are retained. The nonlinear partial differential equations are reduced into the ordinary differential equation （ODE） systems. The resulting ODE systems are solved for the series solutions. The results are analyzed for various physical parameters of interest. Numerical values of the local Nusselt and Sherwood numbers are also computed and analyzed.

Characterization of Rust Layer Formed on Low Alloy Steel Exposed in Marine Atmosphere

The iron rust phases formed on low alloy steels containing different quantities of Cr element have been characterized using EPMA, Raman spectroscopy, TEM, optical microscopy etc. The ion selective properties of synthesized rust films with the same phase constituent as the atmospheric corrosion products were investigated using self-made apparatus. The results showed that corrosion loss of steels exposed in marine atmosphere decreased rapidly as the Cr content of the steel was increased. Cr-containing steels were covered by a uniform compacted rust layer composed of fine particles with an average diameter of several nanometers. Inner rust layer of Cr-containing steel (2 mass fraction) was composed of a-CrxFe1-xOOH, with Cr content of about 5 mass fraction. Such rust layer showed cation selective property, and could depress the penetration of Cl- to contact substrate steel directly.

Percutaneous coronary interventions in the elderly:a 10-year experience in Northern New England

Background There is a paucity of information available for clinical decision making applying to the elderly patient population. Therefore, data of percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) including demographic information on the elderly patients, procedural practices, and outcomes are needed. Objectives and Methods From consecutive PCIs of participating institutions, demographics data, clinical, angiographic success and adverse clinical outcomes were collected. Standard statistical methods were used to compare crude differences in patient and procedural characteristics across age groups. Results At baseline, the prevalence of comorbid conditions ( renal failure and heart failure) increased with age. Unstable angina or a non-ST elevation MI were the most common indications for PCI across all age groups. Fewer patients ≥ 80 years old were undergoing primary PCI and older patients were somewhat less likely to receive a Ⅱb/Ⅲa receptor blocker. Slightly more patients ≥ 80 years old underwent a 2-vessel PCI ( consistent with them having more multivessel disease) and these patients were more likely to have an intervention on a Type C lesion. Compared to patients ＜ 50 years old, those aged ≥ 70 years old had a significantly increased risk of death, MI, stroke, or vascular complications at the access site. Conclusions This study suggests increasing age is associated with increasing risk for an adverse outcome following PCI. This is in part attributable to case-mix but likely, also related to the changing physiology of aging. Despite the increased risk of the procedure, the clinical success rate for PCI is quite high and makes it a reasonable alternative for the treatment of CAD in the elderly.

Coke-tolerant SiW_(20)-Al/Zr_(10) catalyst for glycerol dehydration to acrolein

Glycerol dehydration to acrolein over a series of supported silicotungstic acid catalysts(SiWx‐Al/Zry)was *** results showed that the final catalyst had high thermal stability,a large pore diameter,strong Lewis acidic sites,and a large specific surface area.X‐ray photoelectron survey spectra clearly showed peaks attributable to W(W4f=35.8eV),Al2O3(Al2p=74.9eV),and ZrO2(Zr3d=182.8eV).The highest acrolein selectivity achieved was87.3%at97%glycerol conversion over the SiW20‐Al/*** prepared catalysts were highly active and selective for acrolein formation even after40h because of the presence of high concentrations of Lewis acidic sites,which significantly reduced the amount of coke on the catalyst *** surface methodology optimization showed that87.7%acrolein selectivity at97.0%glycerol conversion could be obtained under the following optimal reaction conditions:0.5wt%catalyst,reaction temperature300°C,and feed glycerol concentration10wt%.Evaluation of a mass‐transfer‐limited regime showed the absence of internal and external diffusions over pellets of diameter dP<20μ*** results show that glycerol dehydration over a strong Lewis acid catalyst is a promising method for acrolein production.

A two-stage leaching process,namely,highpressure acid leaching-atmospheric acid leaching,was used to treat laterite ores under mild *** leaching ratio of Ni was low because of adsorption and incomplete *** this work,surfactants were used as additives to boost the leaching ratio of *** effect of surfactant type(cationic,anionic,and nonionic surfactants)on the leaching ratio of Ni was *** results showed that stearyl trimethyl ammonium chloride(STAC)apparently increased the leaching ratios of valuable *** variation in the physicochemical properties of the lixiviant and the residue improved the leaching ratio of Ni in the presence of *** analysis indicated that the leaching process was controlled by chemical reaction.

In recent years,water collecting systems,with the associated advantages of energy saving and noise reduction,have become the foundation for the development of a scheme to optimize the structure of cooling *** explore the feasibility of this approach for mechanical draft cooling towers,a small-scale experimental device has been built to study the resistance and splash performances of three U-type water collecting devices(WCDs)for different water flow rates and wind *** experimental results show that within the considered ranges of wind speed and water flow rate,the pressure drop of the different WCDs can vary *** resistance and local splash performances can also be remarkably *** recommendations about the most suitable system are ***,a regression analysis of the experimental data is conducted,and the resulting fitting formulas for resistance and splash performance of WCD are reported.

The influence of solid solution treatment on the microstructure and corrosion resistance of as-cast Mg_(95.5)Zn_(1.5)Y_(3) alloy is *** microstructure of the as-cast Mg_(95.5)Zn_(1.5)Y_(3) alloy mainly consisted ofα-Mg,W(Mg_(3)Zn_(3)Y_(2))phase,and the long period stacking ordered(LPSO)(Mg_(12)ZnY)*** solid solution treatment,most of the W phase disappears gradually with increasing solution treatment time,with only a small amount of W phase distributed as *** LPSO phase slightly dissolved into substrate,and its morphology transitions from blocky shape to rod *** solution treatment of Mg_(95.5)Zn_(1.5)Y_(3) exhibits excellent corrosion resistance,because the Y and Zn atoms became enriched in the matrix and the changed morphologies of the LPSO and W phases were modified through heat *** alloy created with solid solution treatment at 520 ℃ for 10 hours exhibits corrosion potential of−1.419 V,suggesting a significant improvement in corrosion performance.
