Though Berberis(Berberidaceae)is widely distributed across the Eurasian landmass it is most diverse in the Himalaya-Hengduan Mountain(HHM)region.There are more than 200 species in China where it is one of the most common mountain shrubs.The study on the taxonomy and evolution of Berberis in this region can thus provide an important insight into the origin and diversification of its flora.A prerequisite to this is mapping and describing the various species of Berberis in the region-a task that despite recent progress is by no means complete.It is clear that in China there may be a significant number of species still to be described and that even with published species much about their distribution remains to be discovered.As a contribution to the first of these tasks seven new species from the northern Hengduan Mountain of N.Sichuan and S.Qinghai:Berberis chinduensis,Berberis degexianensis,Berberis jiajinshanensis,Berberis jinwu,Berberis litangensis,Berberis longquensis and Berberis riparia,are described here.Differences in overall morphology and especially in floral structures with each other and with similar species of Berberis in the same region are presented.The report is the result of phylogenetic analyses based on plastome and partial nrDNA sequences of both the seven proposed new species and a significant number of similar species already published.Provisional conclusions as to the insights provides on the history of the genetic divergence are discussed.

The role of living collections-based research and discovery has been a prominent feature throughout the history of evolution and advance of botanical science: such research is the core and soul of the botanical gardens. Currently, there are c. 162 Chinese botanical gardens, harboring c. 20,000 species in China. As an example of initiatives to utilize the garden cultivated flora to address plant diversity conservation and germplasm discovery for sustainable agriculture and the bio-industries, the Ex situ Flora of China project aims to catalog and document this mega-diversity of plants that are cultivated in the Chinese botanical gardens. The concept of Ex situ Flora of China is a complete new formulation of species, based on garden cultivated individuals and populations, to obtain better morphological descriptions, provide multipurpose applicability and a fundamental data service that will support national bio-strategies and bioindustries. It emphasises integrative information, accurately collected from living collections across different Chinese botanical gardens, on biology, phenology, cultivation requirements and uses of plant resources, which are normally not available from traditional Floras based on herbarium specimens. The ex situ flora should provide better information coverage for taxonomy, biological and introduction and collection data and color photos of stems, leaves, flowers, fruits and seed, as well as useful information of cultivation key points and main use of each plant. In general, the Ex situ Flora of China provides more useful information than the traditional Flora Reipublicae Popularis Sinicae. The project of Ex situ Flora of China is planned to be one of the most important initiatives of the plant diversity research platform for sustainable economic and social development in China.

The Pleistocene was a time of repeated glaciations that severely affected the land biota over large areas of Eurasia and North America. One of the most general patterns in ecology is the positive relationship between environmental heterogeneity and local diversity.On the one hand,increased resource heterogeneity provides more resources for diverse consumers in the community.On the other hand,increased structural heterogeneity creates variation in the environment’s physical structure,thus allowing the coexistence of diverse species with different environmental requirements.Here,we examined the relative importance of resource and structural heterogeneity in determining the taxonomic,functional,and phylogenetic diversity of nutnesting ants in natural rainforest and rubber plantation.The species richness of nut-nesting ants was 70%higher in rainforest than in rubber plantation.The clustered functional and phylogenetic structure in rubber plantation suggested a strong effect of environmental filtering in shaping ant functional and phylogenetic structure.Nesting heterogeneity(nut diversity)was the major factor explaining variation in taxonomic,functional,and phylogenetic diversity,suggesting that resource heterogeneity plays a major role in shaping the biodiversity patterns of nut-nesting ants.Overall,these results indicate that decreased resource diversity following the conversion of rainforest to rubber plantation can drive biodiversity loss in nut-nesting ants,through its effect on reducing both ant species,functional,and phylogenetic diversity.The decline in species richness and functional and phylogenetic diversity in the local ant community might have major effects on ecosystem functioning.

Flowering, fruit set, embryological development, and pollination trials were Investigated In Santslum album L. Each ovary may have three to four ovules. Mlcrosporogenesls and megasporogenesls In the same flower were synchronized at the earlier stages of flower development. However, at anthesls, when pollen was mature, the magaspore had developed only to the stage of a one- to two-nucleus embryo sac. As the eight-nucleus embryo sac developed, some mamelon cells began to undergo programmed cell death, forming holes Into which the eight-nucleus embryo sacs extended, becoming ＂N＂ or ＂S＂ shaped. The development from a two-nucleus embryo sac to a matured eight-nucleus embryo sac lasted up to 10 d. Fruit-set from open pollination was less than 2%. The endosperm develops prior to division of the zygotic embryo and one to three embryos and endosperms were formed In the same fruit. A mature seed usually germinates to produce one seedling; however, two and three seedlings from one seed were also observed, albeit at a low frequency. Pollination trials showed that no seed sets when Inflorescences were covered with s bag; however, artificial pollination could Improve fruit set. Our pollinaUon trials and embryological studies proved that the flower of S. album Is dlchogamous and fruit set has high heterozygosity.

Orchidaceae(with>28,000 orchid species)are one of the two largest plant families,with economically and ecologically important species,and occupy global and diverse niches with primary distribution in rainforests.Among orchids,70%grow on other plants as epiphytes;epiphytes contribute up to~50%of the plant diversity in rainforests and provide food and shelter for diverse animals and microbes,thereby contributing to the health of these ecosystems.Orchids account for over two-thirds of vascular epiphytes and provide an excellent model for studying evolution of epiphytism.Extensive phylogenetic studies of Orchidaceae and subgroups have;been crucial for understanding relationships among many orchid lineages,although some uncertainties remain.For example,in the largest subfamily Epidendroideae with nearly all epiphytic orchids,relationships among some tribes and many subtribes are still controversial,hampering evolutionary analyses of epiphytism.Here we obtained 1,450 low-copy nuclear genes from 610 orchid species,including 431 with newly generated transcriptomes,and used them for the reconstruction of robust Orchidaceae phylogenetic trees with highly supported placements of tribes and subtribes.We also provide generally wellsupported phylogenetic placements of 131 genera and 437 species that were not sampled by previous plastid and nuclear phylogenomic studies.Molecular clock analyses estimated the Orchidaceae origin at~132 million years ago(Ma)and divergences of most subtribes from 52 to 29 Ma.Character reconstruction supports at least 14 parallel origins of epiphytism;one such origin was placed at the most recent common ancestor of~95%of epiphytic orchids and linked to modern rainforests.Ten occurrences of rapid increase in the diversification rate were detected within Epidendroideae near and after the K-Pg boundary,contributing to~80%of the Orchidaceae diversity.This study provides a robust and the largest family-wide Orchidaceae nuclear phylogenetic tree thus far and new insights into the evolution of epiphytism in

China covers a vast territory harbouring a large number of aquatic plants.Although there are many studies on the β-diversity of total,herbaceous or woody plants in China and elsewhere,few studies have focused on aquatic plants.Here,we analyse a comprehensive data set of 889 aquatic angiosperm species in China,and explore the geographic patterns and climatic correlates of total taxonomic and phylogeneticβ-diversity as well as their turnover and nestedness components.Our results show that geographic patterns of taxonomic and phylogenetic β-diversity are highly congruent for aquatic angiosperms,and taxonomic β-diversity is consistently higher than phylogenetic β-diversity.The ratio between the nestedness component and total β-diversity is high in northwestern China and low in southeastern China.The geographic patterns of taxonomic and phylogenetic β-diversity of aquatic angiosperms in China are obviously affected by geographic and climatic distances,respectively.In conclusion,the geographic patterns of taxonomic and phylogenetic β-diversity of aquatic angiosperms are consistent across China.Climatic and geographic distances jointly affect the geographic patterns of β-diversity of aquatic angiosperms.Overall,our work provides insight into understanding the large-scale patterns of aquatic angiosperm β-diversity,and is a critical addition to previous studies on the macroecological patterns of terrestrial organisms.
