Effects of microalgae chlorella species crude extracts on intestinal adaptation in experimental short bowel syndrome

AIM： To evaluate the effects of chlorella crude extract （CCE） on intestinal adaptation in rats subjected to short bowel syndrome （SBS）. METHODS： Wistar rats weighing 230-260 g were used in the study. After anesthesia a 75% small bowel resection was performed. Rats were randomized and divided into groups. Control group （n = 10）： where 5% dextrose was given through a gastrostomy tube, Enteral nutrition （EN） group （n = 10）： Isocaloric and isonitrogen EN （Alitraq, Abbott, USA）, study group （n = 10）： CCE was administrated through a gastrostomy tube. Rats were sacrificed on the fifteenth pcstoperative day and blood and tissue samples were taken. Histopathologic evaluation, intestinal mucosal protein and DNA levels, intestinal proliferation and apoptosis were determined in intestinal tissues, and total protein, albumin and citrulline levels in blood were studied. RESULTS： In rats receiving CCE, villus lengthening, crypt depth, mucosal DNA and protein levels, intestinal proliferation, and serum citrulline, protein and albumin levels were found to be significantly higher than those in control group. Apoptosis in CCE treated rats was significantly reduced when compared to EN group rats. CONCLUSION： CCE has beneficial effects on intestinal adaptation in experimental SBS.

AIM: To investigate the frequency of occult hepatitis B, the clinical course of hepatitis B virus (HBV) reactivation and reverse seroconversion and associated risk factors in autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) recipients. METHODS: This study was conducted in 90 patients undergoing autologous HSCT. Occult HBV infection was investigated by HBV-DNA analysis prior to transplantation, while HBV serology and liver function tests were screened prior to and serially after transplantation. HBV-related events including reverse seroconversion and reactivation were recorded in all patients. RESULTS: None of the patients had occult HBV prior to transplantation. Six (6.7%) patients were positivefor HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) prior to transplantation and received lamivudine prophylaxis; they did not develop HBV reactivation after transplantation. Clinical HBV infection emerged in three patients after transplantation who had negative HBV-DNA prior to HSCT. Two of these three patients had HBV reactivation while one patient developed acute hepatitis B. Three patients had anti-HBc as the sole hepatitis B-related antibody prior to transplantation, two of whom developed hepatitis B reactivation while none of the patients with antibody to HBV surface antigen (anti-HBs) did so. The 14 anti-HBs-and/or anti-HBc-positive patients among the 90 HSCT recipients experienced either persistent (8 patients) or transient (6 patients) disappearance of anti-HBs and/or anti-HBc. HBsAg seroconversion and clinical hepatitis did not develop in these patients. Female gender and multiple myeloma emerged as risk factors for loss of antibody in regression analysis (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Anti-HBc as the sole HBV marker seems to be a risk factor for reactivation after autologous HSCT. Lamivudine prophylaxis in HbsAg-positive patients continues to be effective.

Giant magnetocaloric effect in the Gd_5 Ge_(2.025)Si_(1.925)In_(0.05) compound

The magnetocaloric properties of the GdsGe2.025Si1.925In0.05 compound have been studied by x-ray diffraction, magnetic and heat capacity measurements. Powder x-ray diffraction measurement shows that the compound has a dominant phase of monoclinic Cd5Ge2Si2-type structure and a small quantity of Gds（Ge,Si）3-type phase at room temperature. At about 270 K, this compound shows a first order phase transition. The isothermal magnetic entropy change （△SM） is calculated from the temperature and magnetic field dependences of the magnetization and the temperature dependence of MCE in terms of adiabatic temperature change （△Tad） is calculated from the isothermal magnetic entropy change and the temperature variation in zero-field heat-capacity data. The maximum △SM is -13.6 J·kg^-1.K^- 1 and maximum ATad is 13 K for the magnetic field change of 0 5 T. The Debye temperature （θD） of this compound is 149 K and the value of DOS at the Fermi level is 1.6 states/*** from the low temperature zero-field heat-capacity data. A considerable isothermal magnetic entropy change and adiabatic temperature change under a field change of 0-5 T jointly make the Gd5Ge2.025Si1.925In0.05 compound an attractive candidate for a magnetic refrigerant.

Leptin treatment ameliorates acute lung injury in rats with cerulein-induced acute pancreatitis

AIM:To determine the effect of exogenous leptin on acute lung injury (ALI) in cerulein-induced acute pancreatitis (AP). METHODS:Forty-eight rats were randomly divided into 3 groups. AP was induced by intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of cerulein (50 μg/kg) four times,at 1 h intervals. The rats received a single i.p. injection of 10 μg/kg leptin (leptin group) or 2 mL saline (AP group) after cerulein injections. In the sham group,animals were given a single i.p. injection of 2 mL saline. Experimental samples were collected for biochemical and histological evaluations at 24 h and 48 h after the induction of AP or saline administration. Blood samples were obtained for the determination of amylase,lipase,tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-a,interleukin (IL)-1β,macrophage inflammatory peptide (MIP)-2 and soluble intercellular adhesion molecule (sICAM)-1 levels,while pancreatic and lung tissues were removed for myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity,nitric oxide (NOx) level,CD40 expression and histological evaluation. RESULTS:Cerulein injection caused severe AP,confirmed by an increase in serum amylase and lipase levels,histopathological findings of severe AP,and pancreatic MPO activity,compared to the values obtained in the sham group. In the leptin group,serum levels of MIP-2,sICMA-1,TNF-a,and IL-1b,pancreatic MPO activity,CD40 expression in pancreas and lung tissues,and NOx level in the lung tissue were lower compared to those in the AP group. Histologically,pancreatic and lungdamage was less severe following leptin administration. CONCLUSION:Exogenous leptin attenuates inflammatory changes,and reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines,nitric oxide levels,and CD40 expression in ceruleininduced AP and may be protective in AP associated ALI.

Adipokines and ghrelin in gastric cancer cachexia

AIM:To investigate the roles of the adipocytokines,ghrelin and leptin in gastric cancer cachexia. METHODS:Resistin,ghrelin,leptin,adiponectin,insulin and insulin-like growth factor(IGF-Ⅰ),were measured in 30 healthy subjects,and 60 gastric cancer patients of which 30 suffered from cancer-induced cachexia and 30 served as a control group. The relationships between hormones,body mass index(BMI) loss ratio,age,gender,and Glasgow Prognostic Score(GPS) were investigated. RESULTS:Cachexia patients had higher tumor stage and GPS when compared with non-cachexia patients(P < 0.05). Ghrelin,resistin,leptin,adiponectin and IGF-Ⅰ,showed a significant correlation with BMI loss ratio and GPS(P < 0.05). A strong correlation was seen between GPS and BMI loss(R = -0.570,P < 0.0001). Multivariate analysis indicated that BMI loss was significantly independent as a predictor of ghrelin,resistin,leptin and IGF-Ⅰ(P < 0.05). Existence of an important significant relationship between resistin and insulin resistance was also noted. CONCLUSION:These results showed that serum ghrelin,leptin,adiponectin,and IGF-Ⅰ play important roles in cachexia-related gastric cancers. No relationshipwas found between resistin and cancer cachexia. Also,because of the correlation between these parameters and GPS,these parameters might be used as a predictor factor.

Temperature-Dependent Barrier Characteristics of Inhomogeneous In／p-Si （100） Schottky Barrier Diodes

The current-voltage (I–V) characteristics of In/p-Si Schottky barrier diodes have been determined in the temperature range 100–300K and have been interpreted based on the assumption of a Gaussian distribution of barrier heights due to barrier height inhomogeneities that prevail at the metal–semiconductor interface. The evaluation of the experimental I–V data reveals a decrease of zero-bias barrier height but an increase of ideality factor n with decreasing temperature. The inhomogeneities are considered to have Gaussian distribution with a mean zero-bias barrier height of 0.630eV and standard deviation of 0.083V at zero bias. Furthermore, the mean barrier height and the Richardson constant values were obtained to be 0.617eV and 20.71A K−2 cm−2, respectively, by means of the modified Richardson plot, ln (I0/T2)−(q2σs02/2k2T2) versus 1000/T.

Neuroprotective effect of systemic and/or intravitreal rosuvastatin administration in rat glaucoma model

AIM： To evaluate the neuroprotective effect of rosuvastatin, in a rat experimental glaucoma model. METHODS： Ocular hypertension was induced in right eyes of Long-Evans rats （n=30） by cauterization of three episcleral veins. Left eyes were defined as controls. Rats were divided into five groups： oral rosuvastatin, intravitreal rosuvastatin, oral ＋intravitreal rosuvastatin, intravitreal sham and glaucoma without intervention. Rats were sacrificed at day 14. Retinal ganglion cell （RGC） number was assessed by histopathological analysis. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP-nick end-labeling （TUNEL） staining and the expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein （GFAP） in RGC layer was also examined. RESULTS： A significant intraocular pressure （lOP） elevation was seen （P=0.002）. Elevated lOP resulted in a significant decrease in number of RGCs in group 5 （70.33 ±8.2 cells/mm2） when compared with controls （92.50 ±13.72 cells/mm2; P=0.03）. The RGC number in group 1 （92.4±7.3 cells/mm2） was significantly higher than group 5 （ρ=0.03）. The numbers of RGC in groups 2, 3 （57.3±8.2 cells/mm2, 60.5±12.9 cells/mm2） were comparable with that of group 5 （ρ=0.18 and P=0.31）. The apoptosis rates with TUNEL staining were also parallel to RGC number. Animals with experimentally induced glaucoma showed an increase in retinal GFAP immunoreacUvity. CONCLUSION： Decrease in RGC loss and apoptosis suggest the neuroprotective potential of oral rosuvastatin treatment in a rat model of ocular hypertension. Howeverintravitreal rosuvastatin showed a contrary effect and further studies are required.

Temperature-Dependent Galvanomagnetic Measurements on Doped InSb and InAs Grown by Liquid Encapsulated Czochralski

Resistivity, magnetoresistivity and Hall effect measurements in n-type Te-doped InSb and S-doped InAs samples grown by the liquid encapsulated Czochralski technique were carried out as a function of temperature (14–350K) and magnetic field (0–1.35T). In Te-doped InSb, an impurity level with energy E1 = 3meV and the activation energy E0 = 0.26eV, which is the band gap energy, are obtained from the resistivity and Hall carrier concentration analysis. In S-doped InAs, both the linear and power law models are used in explaining the temperature-dependent resistivity. The effects of impurities on the electron and magnetic transportation properties of InAs and InSb have also been discussed.

Effect of Different Amounts of Graphite on the Sintering and Transverse Rupture Properties of Powder Metal Parts

Iron powders were mixed with graphite powders by 1-15 wt pct to produce block samples using powder metallurgy technique. The powders were blended in a three dimensional blender for 20 min and compacted in a die under 500 MPa by using a one directional press. Sinterability and mechanical properties of the samples with different carbon content were investigated. Sintering process was carried out on a belt furnace with flame curtain in dissociated ammonia atmosphere. Block samples produced were suitable for ASTM B-312 transverse rupture strength test apparatus and were tested with 0.050 kN/s velocity in a press under 100 g load. It was found that graphite amount up to 2 wt pct increased the contact area of particles and acted as a lubricant to affect the sintering behaviour positively. The results indicated that the samples containing up to 5 wt pct showed good sintering behaviour and also good hardness due to an increase in pearlite amount. However, the samples containing higher amount of graphite （more than 5 wt pct） affected the sintering behaviour negatively due to the settlement of free graphite around the Fe powders, which resulted in a decrease in the hardness and transverse rupture strength.
