co.relation between carbon emissions,fuel co.sumption of vehicles and speed limit on expressway

This paper aimed to investigate the co.relation between carbon emissions, fuel co.sumption, and speed limit. A theoretical model was derived based on the energy co.servation law, which expresses the relationship between vehicle's fuel co.sumption and speed. Subsequently, a total of 40 sets of fuel co.sumption data were co.lected through field tests to verify the accuracy of the theoretical model at different speeds and different road longitudinal slope co.binations. The fuel co.sumption was then co.verted to carbon emissions acco.ding to the carbon emission factors specified by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(IPCC). In the field experiment, two types of cars and trucks, which are most co.mon on the expressways in China, were selected. Finally, the travel speed under different posted speed limits was obtained through the previously established model, and the carbon emission changes of different vehicle types at different limited speeds are calculated. The results show that the speed limit has a significant impact on fuel co.sumption and carbon emissions. When the speed limit increased from 80 to 120 km/h,average vehicle speeds increased about 21%-27%, and fuel co.sumption and carbon emissions increased from approximately 33%-38%. Another interesting result was that the vehicle's fuel co.sumption and carbon emissions are only affected by speed. The results of the study explore the effect of speed limits on carbon emissions and provide evidence for road managers to set reasonable speed limits.

Application potential of high performance steels for weight reduction and efficiency increase in co.mercial vehicles

The fast-growing eco.omy and the gradually established highway system have boosted the road trans- portation for both passenger and cargo over the last decade in China. From 2000 to 2010 Chinese GDP increased by around 10.15% annually and the sales of medium and heavy trucks by around 18.87% （sales increased from 0.2 million in 2000 to 1.3 million in 2010） acco.ding to the National Bureau of Statistics of People＇s Republic of China. Today co.mercial vehicles co.sume almost the same amount of fuel as pas- senger cars in China although the number of co.mercial vehicles is only about one fourth of passenger cars. It is estimated that around 50% of imported fuel to China each year will be co.sumed by vehicle transportation. This si- tuation will worsen fuel shortage problems in the long run and at the same time it is partially responsible for the ever- worsening air pollution in China. Due to the widespread overloading in China, lightweight development in co.mer- cial vehicles has fallen far behind that of passenger cars with the co.sequences that Chinese co.mercial vehicles co.sume in average about 20% more fuel, especially the heavy trucks, co.pared to European models. Under these circumstances it is essential to reduce the vehicle fuel co.sumption and in- crease the transport efficiency. The key solution thereby is to implement lightweight design in co.mercial vehicles as it has been successfully practiced over the last decade in the passenger cars. This paper summarizes highlights given in presentations during the ＂International seminar on the ap- plication of high strength steels in light weight co.mercial vehicles＂ with the focus on the development and application of Nb alloyed high performance steels made for lightweight co.mercial vehicles.

This research aims to develop a tail-board add-on to reduce the aerodynamic drag experienced by heavy-duty *** installed at the rear end of the co.tainer,the tail-board can delay the separation of airflow in the tail and improve the flow characteristics of tail *** this study,the co.rectness of the heavy truck aerodynamics model is verified by the wind tunnel test of the1:7.5 reduced *** drag co.fficient and pressure of the heavy-duty truck cruising at 25 m/s are analyzed by CFD *** co.sideration of the baseline result of CFD,the length and angle of tail-board are chosen as design variables for ***,a Kriging approximation model is co.structed with 20 experimental points generated by the Optimal Latin Hypercube *** a result,an aerodynamically optimized tail-board for the rear end of truck in which the aerodynamic performance improves by about11.3% when co.pared to the baseline ***,7 different pit-type non-smooth surfaces are arranged in tail-board of heavy-duty trucks to further enhance the drag reduction effect,and the drag co.fficient is eliminated by another 2.51%.Therefore,the drag co.fficient is reduced up to 13.8% than that of non-mounted trucks.
