Delayed Presentation of Patients with Gynaecological Malignancies in Kano, North-Western Nigeria

The diagnosis and management of gynaecological cancers are still challenging in low- and middle-income countries. In patients with gynaecological malignancies delay at any point increases morbidity and mortality. This study evaluated the factors that may delay presentation, diagnosis and treatment of patients with malignant gynaecological cancers, and described the duration of each delay. It was a prospective cross-sectional study. A total number of 96 patients diagnosed to have gynaecological malignancy were enrolled in the study between the April 2014 and April 2015. The median age was 47.5 years (range of 18 - 84 years). The diagnoses on admission were cervical malignancy 34 (35.42%), ovarian malignancy 32 (33.33%), chorio carcinoma 15 (15.63%), cancers of uterine body (endometrial and leiomyosarcoma) 10 (10.42%) and vulval malignancies 5 (5.2%). Majority of the patients 65 (67.7%) presented late at either stage III or IV. At presentation, 36 patients (37.5%) had severe anaemia;10 patients (10.41%) had obstructive uropathy;3 (3.13%) developed fistula;19 (19.79%) died on admission from complication of their disease. Most patients 61 (63.54%) had delayed presentation of more than 90 days (“patients delay”). Time in decision ranged between 3 days to maximum of 2920 days and median of 150 days. 58 (60.42%) gave a reason for such delay as lack of knowledge of their presenting symptoms, as a warning sign of possible malignancy;80 (83.33%) had delay in diagnosis (“doctor delay”);40 (41.67%) reported that the medical practitioner did not make referral to the center with available gynaecological services;“hospital delay” was observed in 66 (68.75%) of patients. The reason for delayed treatment in 35 (36.46%) of patients was severe patients condition that warrant stabilization (blood transfusion and dialysis) and 29 (30.21%) could not afford the treatment. ANN-based empirical modelling of pile behaviour under static compressive loading

Artificial neural networks have been widely used over the past two decades to successfully develop empirical models for a variety of geotechnical problems. In this paper, an empirical model based on the product-unit neural network (PUNN) is developed to predict the load-deformation behaviour of piles based SPT values of the supporting soil. Other parameters used as inputs include particle grading, pile geometry, method of installation as well as the elastic modulus of the pile material. The model is trained using full-scale pile loading tests data retrieved from FHWA deep foundations database. From the results obtained, it is observed that the proposed model gives a better simulation of pile load-deformation curves compared to the Fleming’s hyperbolic model and t-z approach.

Estimating moment capacity of ferrocement members using self-evolving network

In this paper, an empirical model based on self-evolving neural network is proposed for predicting the flexural behavior of ferrocement elements. The model is meant to serve as a simple but reliable tool for estimating the moment capacity of ferrocement members. The proposed model is trained and validated using experimental data obtained from the literature. The data consists of information regarding flexural tests on ferrocement specimens which include moment capacity and cross-sectional dimensions of specimens, concrete cube compressive strength, tensile strength and volume fraction of wire mesh. Comparisons of predictions of the proposed models with experimental data indicated that the models are capable of accurately estimating the moment capacity of ferrocement members. The proposed models also make better predictions compared to methods such as the plastic analysis method and the mechanism approach. Further comparisons with other data mining techniques including the back-propagation network, the adaptive spline, and the Kriging regression models indicated that the proposed models are superior in terms prediction accuracy despite being much simpler models. The performance of the proposed models was also found to be comparable to the GEP-based surrogate model.

Effect of rooting media and hormone concentrations on vegetative propagation of Balanites aegyptiaca

Vegetative propagation is widely used as a means of genotype preservation in clone banks and seed orchards but despite this, the possibility of vegetative propagation using hormones is not clear for many indigenous tree species, including Balanites aegyptiaca. This research is on the vegetative propagation of B. aegyptiaca as influenced by rooting media and growth *** stem cuttings were obtained from 4 months old seedlings. Nodal stem cuttings 4–5 cm long from 3–5 mm diameter stems were treated with indole-3-butyric acid or indole-3-acetic acid at 50, 100 and 150 mg/L and sown in three different rooting media: top soil, river sand, and sawdust. The results reveal a significant effect(p \ 0.05)of rooting media and growth hormones on B. aegyptiaca cuttings. B. aegyptiaca can be propagated vegitatively without the use of hormones. The control was recommended for vegetative propagation of B. aegyptiaca.

Quartz dissolution in a single phase-high pH Berea sandstone via alkaline injection

A common assertion is that alkaline solution aids oil mobilization by generating in situ soap,or by lowering interfacial tension(IFT)to ultra-low values in synergy with *** study takes a different approach that involves the alkaline dissolution of detrital quartz grains of sandstone reservoirs to create pathways for oil migration and *** dissolution via alkaline injection will result in changes in permeability and *** study performed high-pH core flooding on Berea sandstones using core displacement *** molybdate spectrophotometry was applied to measure the amount of dissolved *** and confining pressure variations were also *** molar concentration of NaOH varied at 0.5 M and 1.0 *** results show higher initial silica dissolution for 0.5 M NaOH(˃200mg/L)compared to 1.0 M NaOH(20 mg/L),which can be attributed to the presence of pre-existing dissolved silica and precipitates in the system prior to the first injection ***,a steady quartz dissolution rate of 0.4 mg/L/hr for 20 h was only achieved at 1.0 ***,an abrupt drop in quartz dissolution to below 0 mg/L was recorded for 0.5 M NaOH after 3 h of *** higher molar concentration of injected alkaline solution,both confining and inlet pressures increased from 8 and 5 bars to 12 and 11 bars as a result of the increased secondary phase of(hydr)oxides or precipitates in the ***,it can be inferred that the effect of alkaline solution on quartz dissolution is strongly dependent on molar concentration.

Traditional medicine for HIV infected patients in antiretroviral therapy in a tertiary hospital in Kano,Northwest Nigeria

Objective:To investigate the prevalence of use of traditional medicines amongst patients with HIV infection receiving therapies of antiretroviral(ARV) drugs at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital(akth),Kano,Northwest Nigeria,and to assess the attitude of these patients to their ARV ***:A cross sectional prospective study using pretested structured questionnaires administered on 430 patients with antiretroviral therapy attending the akth between April and June *** was collected on socio-demographic characteristics,use of traditional medicine and attitude to antiretroviral ***:A mean age of(33.6±8.4) years old was found with 67.2%females and 32.8%males.A total of 29%had no formal education while 10.5%had postgraduate education;12%earned above 35 000 naira(230 USD) per month;63.8%were married;39.8%had at least 2 sexual partners;27.5%used traditional medicine before commencement of antiretroviral therapy(ART),but only 4.25%of patients used ARV and traditional medicine *** was no significant difference in most of the socio-demographic indices between the concurrent users and other patients(P>0.05).A total of 28.8%HIV patients,14.6%patients used traditional medicine before ART and 29.4%concurrent users had missed at least a dose of their ARVs since commencement of therapy.148(37%) of the patients had their drug regimen changed at least once while 23(20.90%) patients receiving traditional medicine before ART and 5(29.41%) patients having two treatments had their drug regimen ***:A total of 4.25%patients used ARV and traditional medicine *** conclusion,the widespread use of traditional medicine by patients living with HIV/AIDS should be of concern to clinicians and policy makers.

Storage stability of dried tomato slice

Unlike fresh farm produce,processed fruits and vegetables such as sun dried tomatoes can be categorized as ambient temperature shelf stable ***,large quantities of these products yet easily go bad most especially when the appropriate conditions for their storage are not *** minimize these losses,it is important to know and exploit the optimum environmental conditions and moisture content range for the storage of the *** present study through systematic theoretical assertions employed by other researchers on other crops seeks to establish the storage stability of dried tomato slice at three probable temperatures of 10,30 and 45°*** showed that in this temperature range,upper limit moisture content varied between 6%-7.5%and 6.5%-8.3%*** adsorption and desorption,*** corresponding lower limit moisture contents varied between 4.29%-5.52%and 5.15%-6.29%*** order to minimize moisture migration into or out of dried tomato slice during storage,the study revealed that the product should be stored within 29%-62%relative humidity.

A mathematical model consisting of a system of four nonlinear ordinary differential equations is *** aim is to study the dynamics of the spread of COVID-19 in Nigeria and to show the effectiveness of awareness and the need for relevant authorities to engage themselves more in enlightening people on the significance of the available control measures in mitigating the spread of the *** equilibrium solutions;Disease free equilibrium and Endemic equilibrium solutions were calculated and their global stability analysis was carried *** reproduction ratio(R0)was also obtained,in this research𝑅𝑅0=*** obtained for Nigeria is used to conduct numerical simulations in order to support the analytic result and to show the significance of awareness in controlling the disease *** the simulation result,it was shown that to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in Nigeria there is need for serious awareness programs to enlighten people on the available control measures;social distancing,self-isolation,use of personal protective equipment(such as face mask,hand globes,overall gown,etc.),regular hand washing using soap or sanitizer,avoiding having contact with person showing the symptoms and reporting any suspected case.

Interactions of ferro-nanoparticles(hematite and magnetite) with reservoir sandstone: implications for surface adsorption and interfacial tension reduction

There are a few studies on the use of ferro-nanofluids for enhanced oil recovery,despite their magnetic properties;hence,it is needed to study the adsorption of iron oxide(Fe2 O3 and Fe3 O4) nanoparticles(NPs) on rock *** is important as the colloidal transport of NPs through the reservoir is subject to particle adsorption on the rock *** dynamics simulation was used to determine the interfacial energy(strength) and adsorption of Fe2 O3 and Fe3 O4 nanofluids infused in reservoir *** transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photon spectroscopy(XPS) were used to monitor interaction of silicate species with Fe2 O3 and Fe3 *** spectral changes show the variation of dominating silicate anions in the ***,the XPS peaks for Si,C and Fe at 190,285 and 700 eV,respectively,are less distinct in the spectra of sandstone aged in the Fe3 O4 nanofluid,suggesting the intense adsorption of the Fe3 O4 with the crude *** measured IFT for brine/oil,Fe2 O3/oil and Fe3 O4/oil are 40,36.17 and 31 mN/m,***3 O4 infused with reservoir sandstone exhibits a higher silicate sorption capacity than Fe2 O3,due to their larger number of active surface sites and saturation magnetization,which accounts for the effectiveness of Fe3 O4 in reducing IFT.
