The Western Depression of the Liaohe basin is the major exploration area of the Liaohe Oilfield, and its main source rocks consist of the third and fourth members of the Shahejie Formation (Es3 and Es4). These source rocks are widely distributed in the depression, with semi-deep lake and fan delta as the main sedimentary facies, brown oil shale and black gray-dark gray mudstone as the main rocks, and a total thickness of 270-1450 m. The kerogens are mainly of the types I and IIA, and partly of the type IIB and least of the type III. The Ro values range from 0.4%-0.8%, indicating an evolution stage from immature to mature. The maturity of Es4 source rocks is rela-tively high, reaching the early mature stage, but their distribution and thickness are lower than those of Es3. Besides, according to biomarker analysis, it is thought that the source rocks of Es3 and Es4 are characterized by mixed input, and most of the source rocks were formed in the brackish water-saline and strongly oxygen-free environment. Fur-thermore, the Qingshui, Niuxintuo and Chenjia sags are believed to possess greater potential for hydrocarbon gen-eration and expulsion, for they are source rocks with a larger thickness, have higher organic carbon contents, belong to better organic matter types and possess higher maturities.

Due to the impacts of globe climate change and human activities,dramatic variations in runoff and sediment load were observed for the Yellow *** of nearly 65 years’ data measured at main hydrologic-stations on the Yellow River from 1950 to 2014 indicated that,except for the Tangnaihai station in the head region,sharp downward trends existed in both the annual runoff and annual sediment load according to the Mann-Kendal trend test;and their abrupt changes occurred in 1986 and in1980,respectively,according to the rank sum *** affecting the changes in the runoff and sediment load were very *** indicated that the reducing precipitation and the increasing water consumption were the main causes for the runoff decline,while the impoundment of the Longyangxia reservoir and its combined operation with the Liujiaxia reservoir exerted a direct bearing on the abrupt change in the annual *** addition to the sediment load decrease associated with the runoff reduction,the reduced storm intensity,the conducted soil erosion control,and the constructed dam buildings all played an important role in the trends and abrupt changes of sediment load decline.

Subtle traps or oil pools have become an important exploration play in the Dongying Depression, Bohai Bay basin, east China. Despite recent successes in exploration, the formation mechanisms of subtle traps are still not well understood. The majority of subtle oil pools in the Dongying Depression are developed in the middle interval of the Es3 Member of the Paleogene Shahejie Formation with the subtle traps being primarily of lenticular basin-floor turbidite sands encompassed in mudstones. Oil in the subtle traps was previously thought to have migrated directly from the surrounding source rocks of the same formation （Es3）. Detailed geochemical investigation of 41 oils and 41 rock samples from the depression now indicates that the oils from the subtle traps cannot be correlated well with the surrounding Es3 source rocks, which are characterized by high Pr/ Ph （〉1）, low Gammacerane/C30hopane, representing a freshwater lacustrine setting. In contrast the oils features low Pr/Ph （〈1） and relatively high Gammacerane content, showing a genetic affinity with the underlying Es4 source rocks, which also have the same qualities, indicating a brackish lacustrine setting. Oils in the Es3 subtle traps are probably derived from mixed sources with the contribution from the upper Es4 source rocks predominating. Therefore unconventional oil migration and accumulation mechanisms need to be invoked to explain the pooling of oils from the ES4 source rocks, which probably came through a thick low interval of the Es3 source rocks with no apparent structural or stratigraphic pathways. We suggest that the subtle oil migration pathway probably plays an important role here. This finding may have significant implications for future exploration and the remaining resource evaluation in the Dongying Depression.

In this study, a magnetic micro-particle conditioning–pressurized vertical electro-osmotic dewatering（MPEOD） process with magnetic micro-particle conditioning–drainage under gravity–mechanical compression–electrical compression（MMPC–DG–MC–EC） stages was established to study the distribution and migration of water, extracellular polymeric substances（EPS）, and other organic matter in the activated sludge（AS） matrix at each *** showed that the MPEOD process could attain 53.52% water content（WC） in dewatered AS with bound water（BW） and free water（FW） reduction rates of 82.97% and 99.67%,respectively. The coagulation and time-delayed magnetic field effects of magnetic microparticles（MMPs） along the MMPC–DG–MC stages initiated the transformation of partial BW to FW in AS. EC had a coupling driving effect of electro-osmosis and pressure on BW, and the changes in pH and temperature at EC stage induced the aggregation of AS flocs and the release of partial BW. Additionally, MMPs dosing further improved the dewatering performance of AS by acting as skeleton builders to provide water passages. Meanwhile, MMPs could disintegrate sludge cells and EPS fractions, thereby reducing tryptophan-like protein and byproduct-like material concentrations in LB-EPS as well as protein/polysaccharide ratio in AS matrix, which could improve AS filterability. At EC stage, the former four Ex/Em regions of fluorescence regional integration analysis for EPS were obviously reduced, especially the protein-like substances in LB-and TB-EPS, which contributed to improvement of AS dewaterability.

Structural characteristics of the Jurassic basins of Xining, Minhe, and Xiji in the east of middle Qilian were researched based on the data obtained by gravitational, magnetic, and seismic methods. The result shows that each of these three basins is an independent structural unit with a NW strike and being separated by upheavals. Two groups of faults with NW and NE directions are developed in the basin, which controls the formation and evolution of the (Jurassic basins). The NW faults are the main ones while the NE faults are the secondary for controlling the sedimentation. Of the three basins, the Minhe basin is the favorable prospecting area.

Discovery of low-mature hydrocarbon in manganese nodules and ooze from the Central Pacific deep sea floor

Extracts from manganese nodules and ooze from the Central Pacific deep sea floor were analyzed using the chromatogram-mass spectrum, and it was found that most of the biomarker molecules are of the low-mature type (some have characteristics of mature): the ratio of 'A'/C is high between 11.4%-19.75%; CPI is 1.22-1.23; C31-22S/ (22S+22R) hopane is 0.59-0.60, Tm/Ts is 0.99-1.99; pa moretane/(αβ+βα) hopane is 0.12-0.14; C29 sterane 20S/(20S+20R) is 0.35-0.41; ββ/(ββ+αα) is 0.38-0.45; arene TA(I)/TA(I+Ⅱ) is 0.16-0.21; methyl-phenanthrene index (MPI1) is 0.35-0.67. According to the geological settings of the sampling area and its organic geochemical characteristics, it is considered that the hydrothermal activities on the ocean floor facilitate the decomposition of organic matter in the sediment, which leads to the generation and migration of hydrocarbon into manganese nodules and ooze. Application of Spectral Decomposition to Detection of Fracture-Cavity Carbonate reservoir Beds in the Tahe OUfield,Tarim basin,NW China

Ordovician fracture-cavity carbonate reservoir beds are the major type of producing formations in the Tahe oilfield, Tarim basin. The seismic responses of these beds clearly changes depending on the different distance of the fracture-cavity reservoir bed from the top of the section. The seismic reflection becomes weak or is absent when the fracture-cavity reservoir beds are less than 20 ms below the top Ordovician. The effect on top Ordovician reflection became weaker with deeper burial of fracture-cavity reservoir beds but the developed deep fracture-cavity reservoir beds caused stronger reflection in the interior of the Ordovician. This interior reflection can be divided into strong long-axis, irregular and bead string reflections, and was present 80 ms below the top Ordovician. Aimed at understanding reflection characteristics, the spectral decomposition technique, which uses frequency to ＂tune-in＂ bed thickness, was used to predict Ordovician fracture-cavity carbonate formations in the Tahe oilfield. Through finely adjusting the processing parameters of spectral decomposition, it was found that the slice at 30 Hz of the tuned data cube can best represent reservoir bed development. Two large N-S-trending strong reflection belts in the mid-western part of the study area along wells TK440- TK427-TK417B and in the eastern part along wells TK404-TK409 were observed distinctly on the 30 Hz slice and 4-D time-frequency data cube carving. A small N-S trending reflection belt in the southern part along wells T403-TK446B was also clearly identified. The predicted reservoir bed development area coincides with the fracture-cavities connection area confirmed by drilling pressure testing results. Deep karst cavities occur basically in three reservoir bed-development belts identified by the Ordovician interior strong reflection. Spectral decomposition proved to be a useful technique in identifying fracture-cavity reservoir beds.

A hydrophobic complex of Cu2＋[bis-salicylic aldehyde-o-phenylenediamine], Cu-SPA, was prepared and used as a heterogeneous photocatalyst to degrade organic pollutants in water under visible irradiation （λ≥420 nm） at neutral pH. The structure of complex was characterized by using nuclear magnetic resonance （NMR）, elemental analysis, IR and UV-vis spectrometries. Degradation of Rhodamine B （RhB）, Sulforhodamine B （SRB） and Benzoic acid （BA） in water were used as model reactions to evaluate the photocatalytic activities of Cu-SPA. The results indicated that RhB and SRB were easily adsorbed on the hydrophobic surface of Cu-SPA from aqueous solution （the maximum adsorption amount： Qmax = 11.09 and 8.05 μmol/g, respectively）. Under visible irradiation, RhB and SRB were decolorized completely after 210 and 240 min, respectively, and BA was removed completely after 5 h. The efficiency of H202 was 〉 95%, in contrast to that of the reaction without catalyst or light （〈 20%）. In water soluble medium, the hydrophobic Cu-SPA can be used more than 6 cycles. ESR results and the behavior of cy- clic voltammetry showed that, in the reaction process, Cu2＋-SPA was reduced to intermediate state Cu＋-SPA firstly, which was extremely unstable and reacted rapidly with H2O2, leading to high reactive oxygen species （.OH radical ） to degrade the substrate.

The challenge of soil loss control and vegetation restoration in the karst area of southwestern China

Soil loss, both from surface soil loss and subsurface soil leakage, in the karst regions of southwestern China is a serious environmental problem that threatens sustainability in that region. The surface soil loss has been extensively studied, and many studies have been conducted to investigate the causes, impacts and mechanisms involved, but the study of subsurface soil leakage has received little attention due to the difficulties in studying the natural conditions. There is no consensus on the overall proportions between surface soil loss and subsurface soil leakage. To control soil loss, improve ecological restoration, and help locals out of poverty, the Chinese government carried out a series of ecological restoration projects in the karst regions of southwestern China starting in the 1980s. As a result, the intensity and areal extent of soil loss continues to decrease and the ecological situation is steadily improving. However, because of the fragile ecosystem in the karst regions, the soil loss control is a long-term task, and the soil loss in some karst regions continues to be a problem. Subsequently, we put forward some suggestions for the policy makers relative to conservation of soil loss and vegetation restoration. These suggestions include:(1) government, private organizations and individuals are encouraged to raise funds for soil loss control and vegetation restoration;(2) nature reserves should be established to increase biodiversity;(3) engineering projects such as small reservoirs, ponds, and flow diversion channels should be constructed in marginal karst regions.
