Exploration of relationships between phytoplankton biomass and related environmental variables using multivariate statistic analysis in a eutrophic shallow lake:A 5-year study

Understanding the process of the changing phytoplankton patterns can be particularly useful in water quality improvement and management decisions. However, it is generally not easy to illustrate the interactions between phytoplankton biomass and related environmental variables given their high spatial and temporal heterogeneity. To elucidate relationships between them, in a eutrophic shallow lake, Taihu Lake, relative long-term data set of biotic and abiotic parameters of water quality in the lake were conducted using multivariate statistical analysis within seasonal periodicity. The results indicate that water temperature and total phosphorus （TP） played governing roles in phytoplankton dynamics in most seasons （i.e. temperature in winter, spring and summer; TP in spring, summer and autumn）; COD （chemical oxygen demand） and BOD （biological oxygen demand） presented significant positive relationships with phytoplankton biomass in spring, summer and autumn. However, a complex interplay was found between phytoplankton biomass and nitrogen considering significant positive relationships occurring between them in spring and autumn, and conversely negative ones in summer. As the predatory factor, zooplankton presented significant grazing-pressure on phytoplankton biomass during summer in view of negative relationship between them in the season. Significant feedback effects of phytoplankton development were identified in summer and autumn in view that significant relationships were obser,qed between phytoplankton biomass and pH, Trans （transparency of water） and DO. The results indicate that interactions between phyto：plankton biomass and related environmental variables are highly sensitive to seasonal periodicity, which improves understanding of different roles of biotic and abiotic variables upon phytoplankton variability, and hence, advances management methods for eutrophic lakes.

Identification of anthropogenic influences on water quality of rivers in Taihu watershed

Surface water bodies are progressively subjected to stress as a result of anthropogenic activities. This study assessed and examined the impact of human activities on spatial variation in the water quality of 19 rivers in the Taihu watershed. Concentrations of physicochemical parameters of surface water quality were determined at the mouth of each river during the period of 2000-2004. Multivariate statistical techniques were applied to identify characteristics of the water quality in the studied rivers. The results showed that rivers strongly influenced by household wastewater have the highest concentrations of nutrients （TN and TP）. Moreover, rivers in the vicinity of a metropolis presented low dissolved oxygen （DO） levels. However, organic-chemical pollution （petroleum and volatile phenolics） was identified with high localization. Two rivers influenced by sewage from industry and ships were distinguished from other rivers with high values of petroleum. The Taige channel, a river located in Changzhou City that is strongly influenced by wastewater from industry, was characterized with an extraordinarily high value of volatile phenolics. Rivers passing through countries, especially through hilly countries were characterized with high DO contents and low nutrient and organic-chemical pollution, suggesting that agriculture puts less pressure on water quality in adjacent rivers. Therefore, more effort should be made in controlling point pollution to restore water quality in rivers adjacent to cities.

Rapid urbanization in Chinese cities has led to a surge in municipal solid waste(MSW)generation,necessitating the development of high-quality MSW disposal *** study utilizes multi-source data and regression models to examine the status,development pathways,and driving forces of MSW disposal facilities in *** findings reveal an inverted U-shaped relationship between the capacities or numbers of MSW disposal facilities and GDP per capita of *** data show that cities in East and Southeast China preferred incineration,while cities in West and Central China developed landfills more,largely shaped by the imbalance of development levels and endowments among regions in *** study also identifies mixed and differentiated influences of socio-economic factors on capacity expansion and increases in the number of MSW disposal *** results suggest the need for updated construction guidelines and regulations,as well as enhanced technological and managerial capabilities for MSW *** findings can inform policymakers and practitioners in their efforts to promote sustainable waste management practices in China.

In developing countries,there is controversy over the correct perception regarding environmental and developmental *** studies have examined the perception of low-income nationals in regards to social and environmental *** paper looks at the relationship between socio-demographic factors and the groups’perceived priority regarding environmental and social issues in Wujin *** results indicated that most residents,specifically the young,government employed and the urban community consider environmental issues to be serious,especially in relation to air pollution and water ***,many residents feel it is important to rank environmental problems that are related to other social and economic issues,and that environmental protection must be set as a priority in Wujin *** to social issues,environmental concern was greater among the young,government employed,and the urban community,because of their higher education and *** addition,66.2%of residents consider environmental protection to be more important than economic ***,environmental protection must be set as a high priority in Wujin County,in order to face the many social and environmental challenges inherent in development.

By developing a GDMOD model to estimate the environmental externalities associated with electricity generation, this project provides a detailed analysis of the damages and costs caused by different pollutants at varying distances from the Mawan Electricity Plant in Shenzhen, China. The major findings of this study can be summarized that (1) environmental damages caused by electricity production are large and are mainly imposed on regions far away from the electricity plant; (2) air pollution is the most significant contributor to the total damages, and SO_2, NOx, and particulate matter are the three major pollutants with highest damages; (3) the damages caused per unit of particulate, NOx, and SO_2 emissions are much higher than pollution treatment and prevention costs. The research results of this project showed that China needs to have a more effective levy system on SO_2, and a more manageable electricity tariff mechanism to internalize the environmental externalities. The results have also implications for pollution control strategies, compensation schemes as well as emission trading arrangements.

In order to provide scientific support to policy makers in the regulation of PM2.5 pollution in China, it is important to accurately assess the current status, spatiotemporal characteristics and regionalization data for this air pollutant. An analysis of the pollution status of PM2.5 was conducted using daily averaged mass concentration data recorded in 74 cities in 2013 and 161 cities in 2014. The rotated empirical orthogonal function(REOF) method was applied to analyze this data. Results showed that the average annual PM2.5 concentration in urban areas of China is 62.2±21.5 ?g/m3, and that the distribution is spatially heterogeneous. The North China Plain, middle and lower Yangtze River Plain, Sichuan Basin and Guanzhong Plain had relatively high annual PM2.5 concentrations compared with the southeast coastal region, the Tibetan Plateau and the Yungui Plateau. PM2.5 mass concentrations tended to be higher in winter than in summer, however, the data for many cities showed a small peak in concentrations from May to July. An analysis of the spatial correlation of PM2.5 indicated a significant influence of topographic conditions. A lower correlation was observed where terrain features varied greatly. Based on the results of the REOF analysis and topographic characteristics, ten regions were identified in mid-eastern China, which could be considered as basic pollution prevention divisions for PM2.5; these include the North China Plain region, Pearl River Delta region, Jianghuai Plain region, middle Yangtze River Plain region, Northeast Plain region, Jiangnan coastal region, Sichuan Basin region, Qiantao Plain region, Guanzhong-Central Plain region and Yungui Plateau region. Seasonal variations in the regionalization data were observed, especially for the North China Plain and Pearl River Delta regions. Among the ten regions identified in this study, the North China Plain, Guanzhong-Central Plain, middle Yangtze River Plain and Jianghuai Plain had relatively high PM2.5
