Coralline algae are globally distributed calcifying species and play critical ecological roles to marine ecosystems by contributing significantly to their structural complexity and *** surface types of historical samples in sanya coral reef reserve were studied based on the scanning electron microscope(SEM)*** results show six thallus surface types within the study area:Corallina-type,Jania-type,Leptophytum-type,Phymatolithon-type,Pneophyllum-type,and *** Phymatolithon-type is the dominant surface type in sanya *** new record species in the region are described:Amphiroa beauvoisii and Neogoniolithon *** thallus surface types provide useful diagnostics characters for distinguishing coralline algae at tribe or subfamily level,species identification needs to refer to the reproductive *** is the first surface study of coralline algae in the South China *** result provides the baseline data needed for the monitoring and management of reef-building organisms of coral reef in China.

The onsite next generation sequencing(NGS)of Ebola virus(EBOV)genomes during the 2013–2016 Ebola epidemic in Western Africa provides an opportunity to trace the origin,transmission,and evolution of this ***,we have diagnosed a cohort of EBOV patients in Sierra Leone in 2015,during the late phase of the *** surviving EBOV patients had a recovery process characterized by decreasing viremia,fever,and biochemical *** genomes sequenced through the longitudinal blood samples of these patients showed dynamic intra-host substitutions of the virus during acute infection,including the previously described short stretches of 13 serial TNC ***,within individual patients,samples collected during the early phase of infection possessed Ts at these nucleotide sites,whereas they were replaced by Cs in samples collected in the later phase,suggesting that these short stretches of TNC mutations could emerge *** addition,up to a total of 35 nucleotide sites spanning the EBOV genome were mutated *** study showed the dynamic intra-host adaptation of EBOV during patient recovery and gave more insight into the complex EBOV-host interactions.

INTRODUCTION Sepsis is defined as an infection associated with systemic manifestations of inflammation, which has become the most common complication in the perioperative period caused by severe burn/trauma and major surgical operation.[1,2] The incidence of sepsis in adults is estimated to be 149–240/100 000 per year, and that of severe sepsis and septic shock is 56–91/100 000 per year. In the last decade, the short-term mortality of sepsis has declined to around 20% in developed countries partly due to the international Surviving Sepsis Campaign （SSC）, while the mortality remains very high （50%–80%） in 1–5 years after discharge from hospitals.[3–7] Thus, sepsis and its subsequent severe sepsis and septic shock are currently major issues in the field of medical and health care.

Research on two-dimensional(2D) materials has been explosively increasing in last seventeen years in varying subjects including condensed matter physics, electronic engineering, materials science, and chemistry since the mechanical exfoliation of graphene in 2004. Starting from graphene, 2D materials now have become a big family with numerous members and diverse categories. The unique structural features and physicochemical properties of 2D materials make them one class of the most appealing candidates for a wide range of potential applications. In particular, we have seen some major breakthroughs made in the field of 2D materials in last five years not only in developing novel synthetic methods and exploring new structures/properties but also in identifying innovative applications and pushing forward commercialisation. In this review, we provide a critical summary on the recent progress made in the field of 2D materials with a particular focus on last five years. After a brief backgroundintroduction, we first discuss the major synthetic methods for 2D materials, including the mechanical exfoliation, liquid exfoliation, vapor phase deposition, and wet-chemical synthesis as well as phase engineering of 2D materials belonging to the field of phase engineering of nanomaterials(PEN). We then introduce the superconducting/optical/magnetic properties and chirality of 2D materials along with newly emerging magic angle 2D superlattices. Following that, the promising applications of 2D materials in electronics, optoelectronics, catalysis, energy storage, solar cells, biomedicine, sensors, environments, etc. are described sequentially. Thereafter, we present the theoretic calculations and simulations of 2D materials. Finally, after concluding the current progress, we provide some personal discussions on the existing challenges and future outlooks in this rapidly developing field.
