Neighbour effects on plant biomass and its allocation for forbs growing in heterogeneous soils

Focal plants are considerably affected by their neighbouring plants,especially when growing in heterogeneous soils.A previous study on grasses demonstrated that soil heterogeneity and species composition affected plant biomass and above-and belowground allocation *** now tested whether these findings were similar for *** forb species(*** anglica,Limonium bicolor and Suaeda glauca)were grown in pots with three levels of soil heterogeneity,created by alternatively filling resource-rich and resource-poor substrates using small,medium or large patch *** compositions were created by growing these forbs either in monocultures or in *** showed that patch size×species composition significantly impacted shoot biomass,root biomass and total biomass of forbs at different ***,at the pot scale,shoot biomass,root biomass and total biomass increased with increasing patch *** the substrate scale,shoot biomass and total biomass were higher at the large patch size than at the medium patch size,both in resource-rich and resource-poor ***,at the community scale,monocultures had more shoot biomass,root biomass and total biomass than those in the two-or three-species *** results differ from earlier findings on the responses of grasses,where shoot biomass and total biomass decreased with patch size,and more shoot biomass and total biomass were found in resource-rich than resource-poor *** further elucidate the effects of soil heterogeneity on the interactions between neighbour plants,we advise to conduct longer-term experiments featuring a variety of functional groups.

Is a catalyst always beneficial in plasma catalysis? Insights from the many physical and chemical interactions

Plasma-catalytic dry reforming of CH_(4)(DRM) is promising to convert the greenhouse gasses CH_(4) and CO_(2) into value-added chemicals, thus simultaneously providing an alternative to fossil resources as feedstock for the chemical industry. However, while many experiments have been dedicated to plasma-catalytic DRM, there is no consensus yet in literature on the optimal choice of catalyst for targeted products,because the underlying mechanisms are far from understood. Indeed, plasma catalysis is very complex,as it encompasses various chemical and physical interactions between plasma and catalyst, which depend on many parameters. This complexity hampers the comparison of experimental results from different studies, which, in our opinion, is an important bottleneck in the further development of this promising research field. Hence, in this perspective paper, we describe the important physical and chemical effects that should be accounted for when designing plasma-catalytic experiments in general, high-lighting the need for standardized experimental setups, as well as careful documentation of packing properties and reaction conditions, to further advance this research field. On the other hand, many parameters also create many windows of opportunity for further optimizing plasma-catalytic ***, various experiments also reveal the lack of improvement in plasma catalysis compared to plasma-only, specifically for DRM, but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. Therefore, we present our newly developed coupled plasma-surface kinetics model for DRM, to provide more insight in the underlying reasons. Our model illustrates that transition metal catalysts can adversely affect plasmacatalytic DRM, if radicals dominate the plasma-catalyst interactions. Thus, we demonstrate that a good understanding of the plasma-catalyst interactions is crucial to avoiding conditions at which these interactions negatively affect the results, and we provide some recommendations for im

background:Chronic treatment of glaucoma can present a challenge in patients who lack the means and/or the discipline to use daily glaucoma *** wondered if selective laser trabeculoplasty(SLT)could be a useful ***:Inclusion criteria:controlled trials comparing efficacy of SLT in adult patients with any form of open angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension and case reports on side effects of *** recent meta-analyses identified eight randomized clinical trials(RCTs)comparing the effect of SLT with medication(prostaglandin analogs)and with argon laser trabeculoplasty(ALT).We took these eight RCTs as reference base and calculated their success rates where they were not *** articles were added to elaborate on technique and side ***:Mean intraocular pressure(IOP)reduction after SLT was 3.8–8.0 mmHg after 6 months to 1 *** success rate of SLT at 6 months to 1 year is 55–82%.Higher IOP before laser predicts a higher IOP-lowering *** terms of mean IOP reduction,reduction in number of medications and treatment success,the effect of SLT was found to show no clinically relevant difference from that of contemporary medication(prostaglandin analogs)and from ***:The evidence indicates that SLT is an efficacious primary or adjunctive therapy for treating glaucoma.

Spatial variation behaviors of argon inductively coupled plasma during discharge mode transition

A Langmuir probe and an ICCD are employed to study the discharge mode transition in Ar inductively coupled plasma. Electron density and plasma emission intensity are measured during the E （capacitive discharge） to H （inductive discharge） mode transitions at different pressures. It is found that plasma exists with a low electron density and a weak emission intensity in the E mode, while it has a high electron density and a strong emission intensity in the H mode. Meanwhile, the plasma emission intensity spatial （2D an asymmetric profile in the E mode. Moreover, the at high pressure, but increase almost continuously at image） profile is symmetrical in the H mode, but the 2D image is electron density and emission intensity jump up discontinuously the E to H mode transition under low pressure.

Silicene nanoribbons on transition metal dichalcogenide substrates： Effects on electronic structure and ballistic transport

The idea of stacking multiple monolayers of different two-dimensional materials has become a global pursuit. In this work a silicene armchair nanoribbon of width W and van der Waals-bonded to different transition-metal dichalcogenide （TMD） bilayer substrates MoX2 and WX2, where X = S, Se, Te is considered. The orbital resolved electronic structure and ballistic transport properties of these systems are simulated by employing van der Waals-corrected density functional theory and nonequilibrium Green＇s functions. We find that the lattice mismatch with the underlying substrate determines the electronic structure, correlated with the silicene buckling distortion and ultimately with the contact resistance of the two-terminal system. The smallest lattice mismatch, obtained with the MoTe2 substrate, results in the silicene ribbon properties coming close to those of a freestanding one. With the TMD bilayer acting as a dielectric layer, the electronic structure is tunable from a direct to an indirect semiconducting layer, and subsequently to a metallic electronic dispersion layer, with a moderate applied perpendicular electric field.

Vibrational properties of silicene and germanene

The structural and vibrational properties of two-dimensional hexagonal silicon （silicene） and germanium （germanene） are investigated by means of first-principles calculations. It is predicted that the silicene （germanene） structure with a small buckling of 0.44 ,~ （0.7/k） and bond lengths of 2.28 ,~ （2.44 .~） is energetically the most favorable, and it does not exhibit imaginary phonon mode. The calculated non-resonance Raman spectra of silicene are characterized by a main peak at about 575 cm-1, namely the G-like peak. For germanene, the highest peak is at about 290 cm-1. Extensive calculations on armchair silicene nanoribbons and armchair germanene nanoribbons are also performed, with and without hydrogenation of the edges. The studies reveal other Raman peaks mainly distributed at lower frequencies than the G-like peak which could be attributed to the defects at the edges of the ribbons, thus not present in the Raman spectra of non-defective silicene and germanene. Particularly the Raman peak corresponding to the D mode is found to be located at around 515 cm-1 for silicene and 270 cm-1 for germanene. The calculated G-like and the D peaks are likely the fingerprints of the Raman spectra of the low-buckled structures of silicene and germanene.

Influence of Defect Particles on Configuration of a Two-Dimensionally Confined Dusty Plasma

The behaviour of defect particles in a two-dimensional （2D） confined dusty plasma system is investigated by molecular dynamics （MD） simulations. The mean square displacement （MSD） and the pair correlation function g（r） are used to characterize the structural and dynamical properties of the system. The influences of the number and the charge （mass） of the defect particles on the system configurations are simulated. All the defect particles with charges （masses） larger than the normal particles have the trend to move towards the system centre. The moving speed of the defect particles towards the centre increases with the increasing number and charge （mass） of defect particles and with the system temperature.

Structure of Multi-Species Charged-Particles with Competing Interactions in a Quadratic Trap

Multi-species charged-particles interacting with each other by a competing short-range attraction and long-range repulsion potential confined in a quadratic trap are studied with molecular dynamics simulations. It is found that particles with similar mass-to-charge ratio tend to populate a common shell, whose location depends on the particle mass-to-charge ratio, and that the greater the latter is, the closer the particles to the centre of the trap are. This rule for the ground-state configuration is independent of the total particle and species numbers in the system.

Selective laser trabeculoplasty in pseudophakic and phakic eyes:a prospective study

AIM：To compare the efficacy of selective laser trabeculoplasty（SLT） in replacing medical therapy in pseudophakic and phakic ***：Subgroup of a prospective randomized clinical trial including patients with primary open angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension controlled with *** 38 pseudophakic eyes were matched with 38 phakic *** was offered as a way to decrease medication while maintaining the same low eye *** was performed over 360°,at 3ns,spotsize 400 μm,100 *** [intraocular pressure（IOP）,number of medications needed] were measured at 1h,1wk,1,3,6 and 12 *** independent-samples t-test was performed to compare baseline characteristics of the phakic and the pseudophakic group and differences in evolution of mean IOP and number of used ***-squared analysis was performed to investigate proportions of fast,slow and ***：The mean IOP measurement was 13.00± 2.88 mm Hg in the phakic group（38 eyes） and 13.51±3.06 mm Hg in the pseudophakic group（38 eyes）（P〉0.05）.This changed little after SLT and IOP lowering effect was comparable between the two *** aim however was to lower the amount of medication *** the phakic group medication lowered from 1.29±0.62 at baseline,to 0.15±0.46 after 12mo;a reduction of 88.37%.In the pseudophakic group,used medication changed from 1.71±1.04,to 0.41±0.61;a 76.02% *** differences were not statistically significant at any time point（P〉0.05）.IOP lowering occurred slightly faster in thepseudophakic group（50% of patients after one week） than in the phakic group（68% of patients after more than 4wk）.The difference was not significant（P〉0.05）.CONCLUSION：IOP lowering effect of SLT is comparable between phakic and pseudophakic eyes.
