BACKGROUND Several studies report the useful therapeutic results of regional hyperthermia in association with chemotherapy(ChT) and radiotherapy for the treatment of pancreatic cancer. Modulated electrohyperthermia(mEhT) is a new hyperthermia technique that induces immunogenic death or apoptosis of pancreatic cancer cells in laboratory experiments and increases tumor response rate and survival in pancreatic cancer patients, offering beneficial therapeutic effects against this severe type of *** To assess survival, tumor response and toxicity of mEhT alone or combined with ChT compared with ChT for the treatment of locally advanced or metastatic pancreatic *** This was a retrospective data collection on patients affected by locally advanced or metastatic pancreatic cancer(stage Ⅲ and IV) performed in 9 Italian centers, members of International Clinical hyperthermia Society-Italian Network. This study included 217 patients, 128(59%) of them were treated with ChT(no-mEhT) and 89(41%) patients received mEhT alone or in association with ChT. mEhT treatments were performed applying a power of 60-150 watts for 40-90 min, simultaneously or within 72 h of administration of *** Median patients’ age was 67 years(range 31-92 years). mEhT group had a median overall survival greater than non-mEhT group(20 mo, range 1.6-24, vs 9 mo, range 0.4-56.25, P hT group showed a higher number of partial responses(45% vs 24%, P = 0.0018) and a lower number of progressions(4% vs 31%, P han the no-mEhT group, at the three months follow-up. Adverse events were observed as mild skin burns in 2.6% of mEhT *** mEhT seems safe and has beneficial effects on survival and tumor response of stage Ⅲ-IV pancreatic tumor treatment. Further randomized studies are warranted to confirm or not these results.

Association between Metabolic Syndrome Components and Serum high-Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein or Interleukin-6 Levels among Congolese Adults

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components have been linked to elevated serum levels of inflammatory biomarkers such as C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, interleukin-1β and tumor necrosis factor alpha. The aim of our study was to address the association between MetS components with serum hs-CRP and IL-6 levels among Congolese adults. A total of 357 participants (aged 30 - 87 years) were included in this cross-sectional study. Anthropometrics were collected and fasting blood sampled for assessment of fasting blood glycaemia (FBG), lipids and inflammatory parameters using commercially available assays. NCEP-ATPIII criteria were used to define MetS. The Median (IQR) hs-CRP and IL-6 levels were higher in participants with MetS than in those without ([7 (4, 14) versus 6 (4, 8)] mg/L;p = 0.092 and [23.8 (20.9, 27.6) versus 22.3 (19.5, 25.0)] pg/mL;p = 0.002). hs-CRP and IL-6 levels were significantly higher in females with MetS than in those without, but not in males. Among participants, only TG was correlated with hs-CRP (r = 0.149, p = 0.007), and a significant correlation was observed between TG (r = 0.116, p = 0.037), FBG (r = 0.208, p = 0.000), hDL-C (r = −0.119, p = 0.034) and SBP (r = 0.143, p = 0.010) and IL-6. In males, hs-CRP levels were positively correlated with TG (0.316;p = 0.000), negatively with hDL-C (r = −0.290, p = 0.0022), without such correlations in females. In Ames, IL-6 levels were positively correlated with FBG (r = 0.202;p = 0.035), and negatively with hDL-C (r = −0.249, p = 0.009). Significant correlations between IL-6 levels and FBG (r = 0.214;p = 0.000) or SBP (r = 0.227, p = 0.000) were observed in females. Logistic regression analysis was carried out to identify the relationship between MetS components and hs-CRP or IL-6. Values of area under receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves suggest potential use of serum hs-CRP (AUC = 0.675) and IL-6 (AUC = 0.656) as diagnostic biomarkers of MetS. X-Band Mini Radar for Observing and Monitoring Rainfall Events

Quantitative precipitation estimation and rainfall monitoring based on meteorological data, potentially provides continuous, high-resolution and large-coverage data, are of high practical use: Think of hydrogeological risk management, hydroelectric power, road and tourism. Both conventional long-range radars and rain-gauges suffer from measurement errors and difficulties in precipitation estimation. For efficient monitoring operation of localized rain events of limited extension and of small basins of interest, an unrealistic extremely dense rain gauge network should be needed. Alternatively C-band or S-band meteorological long range radars are able to monitor rain fields over wide areas, however with not enough space and time resolution, and with high purchase and maintenance costs. Short-range X-band radars for rain monitoring can be a valid compromise solution between the two more common rain measurement and observation instruments. Lots of scientific efforts have already focused on radar-gauge adjustment and quantitative precipitation estimation in order to improve the radar measurement techniques. After some considerations about long range radars and gauge network, this paper presents instead some examples of how X-band mini radars can be very useful for the observation of rainfall events and how they can integrate and supplement long range radars and rain gauge networks. Three case studies are presented: A very localized and intense event, a rainfall event with high temporal and spatial variability and the employ of X-band mini radar in a mountainous region with narrow valleys. The adaptability of such radar devoted to monitor rain is demonstrated.
