Effects of Water-table Depth and Soil Moisture on Plant Biomass, Diversity, and Distribution at a Seasonally Flooded Wetland of Poyang lake, China

Hydrological regime has been widely recognized as one of the major forces determining vegetation distribution in seasonally flooded wetland. Poyang lake, the largest freshwater lake in China, has been encountering dramatic changes in hydrological conditions in last decade, which greatly influenced the wetland vegetations. To explore the relationships between hydrology and vegetation distri- bution, water-table depth, soil moisture, species composition, diversity and biomass were measured at a seasonally flooded wetland section at Wucheng national nature reserve. Three plant communities, Artemisia capillaris, Phragmites australis and Carex cineras- cens communities, were examined which are zonally distributed from upland to lakeshore with decreasing elevation. Canonical corre- spondence analysis （CCA）, spearmen correlation and logistic regression were adopted to analyze the relationships between vegetation characteristics and hydrological variables of water-table depth and soil moisture. Results show that significant hydrological gradient exist along the wetland transect. Water-table demonstrates a seasonal variation and is consistently deepest in A. capillaris community （ranging from q）.5 m above ground to ＋10.3 m below ground）, intermediate in P. australis community （-2.6 m to ＋7.8 m） and shallow- est in C. cinerascens community （-4.5 m to ＋6.1 m）. Soil moisture is lowest and most variable in A. capillaris community, highest and least variable in P. australis community, and intermediate and moderate variable in C. cinerascens community. The CCA ordination indicated that variables of water-table depth and soil moisture are strongly related to community distribution, which explained 81.7% of the vegetation variations. Species diversity indices are significantly positively correlated with soil moisture and negatively correlated with moisture variability, while above- and belowground biomass are positively correlated with moisture. A Stable Isotope Approach to Determine Herbivorous Diets of Wintering Geese at Dongting lake,China

The East Dongting lake national nature reserve in China is listed as a Ramsar Wetlands due to its global significance for migratory waterbird conservation, especially for the geese. For example, more than 90% of East Asian population of the vulnerable Lesser White-fronted Goose(Anser erythropus), and large numbers of Bean Goose(Anser fabilis) and Greater White-fronted Goose(Anser albifrons) over winter here every year from October to the next March. However, the habitats and food quality of the wintering geese have been threatened by hydrological alternation due to the operation of the Three Gorges Dam. Understanding the diets of these geese is fundamental for their conservation. We used the stable isotopic ratios of the body tissues of three predominant goose species(i.e. Ans?er erythropus, Anser fabilis and Anser albifrons) and their potential diet items(6 grass species), and applied smooth transition autoregressive(SIAR) mixing models to quantify the contribution of different food items to their diets. The results showed that the δ13C values of the blood samples were significantly different from those of feather, and the difference was consistent for the three kinds of geese. These results indicated that clear dietary shifts from their breeding place at the Arctic to the wintering place at Dongting lake. The δ13C values of the blood samples of the geese showed there were no significant difference(ANOVA, p=0.265) suggesting that they share the same food sources at Dongting lake. Moreover, the multiple-source mixing models(i.e. SIAR model) indicated that no single plant had a contribution greater than 35% to the diet of geese at 0.95 confident levels(0.50 and 0.95 credibility intervals of the posterior distributions range from 0.24-0.25 and 0.32-0.34, respectively). The results indicated that the geese had no preference for a particular plant. Understanding water dynamics is a prerequisite for the restoration of degraded ecosystems in arid and semiarid *** this study,we carried out δD and δ^(18)O analyses of precipitation,unsaturated soil water,overland flow,surface runoff,and groundwater samples from a seasonally flooded wetland in the Momoge national nature reserve of the Songnen Plain,Northeast China,to identify the water sources and understand the mechanisms of unsaturated soil water *** soil water content(W/W%)at every 20 cm along with a soil profile(0–100 cm)was collected during the growing season,and the HYDRUS-1D model was used to simulate temporal-spatial *** results showed that the local meteoric water line(δD=5.90δ18O-7.34,R2=0.95)had a smaller slope and intercept than the global meteoric water line because of strong evaporation at our study site under semi-arid *** groundwater was partly recharged by local precipitation via overland flow and unsaturated soil water *** soil water was sourced from both precipitation and groundwater with variations at different *** upper soil layer at 0–15 cm was mainly sourced from limited precipitation,while the groundwater could move up to a 25 cm layer during the dry *** unsaturated soil water content increased with soil depth in the top 40 cm,decreased at depths of 40 to 80 cm,and increased again at depths of 80 to 100 *** HYDRUS-1D model could simulate the unsaturated soil water dynamics well in the upper(0–40 cm)and lower(80–100 cm)sections,but poorly for depths of 40–80 cm due to the upward and downward *** bidirectional unsaturated soil water movement highlights the importance of capillary groundwater for wetland plants with similar climatic or hydrogeological conditions.

Growth characteristics of Suaeda salsa under different soil salinity gradients in controlled experiments

Xinjiang is the province with the largest saline-alkali land in *** growth of halophytes will be stressed when their salt content reaches the *** this study,the pot experiments were conducted and Suaeda salsa,a typical halophyte,was selected as the object to explore the relationship between growth characteristics and salt content under different soil salinity *** gradients were set according to the maximum soil salinity in the current years of Ebinur lake Wetland national nature reserve(ELWNNR).They were classified using the following threshold values:≤2 g/kg(Control Group),10 g/kg,20 g/kg,30 g/kg,and 40 g/*** original spectrum,trilateral position and growth characteristics were used as indexes for *** the increase of soil salt content,the red edge shift occurs first,followed by the blue edge *** position of yellow edge,green peak and blue edge were not sensitive to the change of soil *** indicates that the red edge is the best indicator for evaluating plant *** with the Control Group,when the salt content is less than 10 g/kg,the growth status of plant seems not significantly ***,plant growth begins to be stressed when the salt content increases to 20 g/kg,which is a turning point for plant *** increase of soil salt content can inhibit chlorophyll synthesis and plant *** begin to die when the salt content reaches 40 g/***,40 g/kg could be regarded as the critical point of salt content which inhibits plant *** study also shows that the relationship between plant-height change rate and soil salt content is the most significant,indicating that the plant-height change rate is significantly impacted by soil salt content.
