Bird Species Diversity and Spatio-temporal Variation in the Sihong Hongze lake Wetland national nature reserve in eastern China

As an important hub on the east Asian-Australian Flyway(EAAF),Hongze lake is an important migratory stopover and wintering site for hundreds of thousands of ***,research on bird community diversity in this area is still *** conducted a bird survey from July 2020 to June 2021 using the line transect method on the terrestrial habitat,as well as the fixed-point method in the lake wetland at the Sihong Hongze lake Wetland national nature reserve located in northwestern Hongze lake,and analyzed the temporal-spatial variation in the bird *** results showed that a total of 170432 detections of 215 bird species belonging to 18 orders and 55 families were *** terms of species composition,the proportion of terrestrial birds was relatively high,followed by waterfowl richness,with high numbers of Anatidae species and *** bird species abundance,waterfowl had the highest abundance of common coot(Fulica atra),belonging to the Rallidae family,followed by Anatidae and Ardeidae *** abundance of shorebirds was extremely low,and that of non-waterfowl was also *** terms of temporal patterns,the number of bird species and richness index were higher in spring and autumn but lower in winter and *** bird abundance was the highest in winter,and the remaining three seasons were similar in terms of bird *** diversity index and evenness index were higher in spring,summer and autumn,and lowest in *** the spatial pattern,the open water in the western part of the reserve included the most densely distributed areas for birds,and the number of bird species and their abundance were both the highest in that *** were significant differences in the bird community structures among the four *** species number and richness index of birds in the reed habitat were the highest,and the bird abundance was also high,but the diversity index and evenness index were *** the bird abundance in the lake habitat wa

Migration routes of the endangered Oriental Stork(Ciconia boyciana)from Xingkai lake,China,and their repeatability as revealed by GPS tracking

The Oriental Stork(Ciconia boyciana)is listed as'Endangered'on the International Union for the Conservation of nature(IUCN)Red List of Threatened Species and is classified as a first category nationally protected bird species in *** this species'seasonal movements and migration will facilitate effective conservation to promote its *** tagged 27 Oriental Stork nestlings at Xingkai lake on the Sanjiang Plain in Heilongjiang Province,China,used GPS tracking to follow them over the periods of 2014-2017 and 2019-2022,and confirmed their detailed migratory routes using the spatial analysis function of ArcGIS *** discovered four migration routes during autumn migration:one common long-distance migration route in which the storks migrated along the coastline of Bohai Bay to the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River for wintering,one short-distance migration route in which the storks wintered in Bohai Bay and two other migration routes in which the storks crossed the Bohai Strait around the Yellow River and wintered in South *** were no significant differences in the number of migration days,residence days,migration distances,number of stopovers and average number of days spent at stopover sites between the autumn and spring migrations(P>0.05).However,the storks migrated significantly faster in spring than in autumn(P=0.03).The same individuals did not exhibit a high degree of repetition in their migration timing and route selection in either autumn or spring *** storks from the same nest exhibited considerable between-individual variation in their migration *** important stopover sites were identified,especially in the Bohai Rim Region and on the Songnen Plain,and we further explored the current conservation status at these two important ***,our results contribute to the understanding of the annual migration,dispersal and protection status of the endangered Oriental Stork and provide a scientific bas

Burrow Characteristics and Microhabitat Use of the Turpan Wonder Gecko Teratoscincus roborowskii (Squamata, Gekkonidae)

Burrow structural charactersitcs and microhabitat use of the Turpan wonder gecko Teratoscincus roborowskii （Gekkonidae） were studied between April and September of 2013 in the Turpan Eremophytes Botanic Garden, in the Turpan Depression of Western China. Burrow depth, entrance orientation, entrance height and width were observed. We assessed microhabitat selection and noted differences in microhabitat use among males, females, and juveniles. The magnitude of selection was measured using Jacobs＇ index of selectivity. Entrance height and width of the burrows of adults were significantly larger than those of juveniles, but the difference in burrow depth was not significant. The directional orientation of the burrow entrance showed a preference for the north-northeast and south-southeast, which were likely influenced by local prevailing winds and sunlight. Both the adult and juvenile geckos prefer to construct their burrows in sandy soil within a layer of loose soil whose thickness is greater than 30 cm. A majority of the burrows were located within 20 m of the nearest plant. Nearly half （48%） of the entrances of juveniles were located within 5 m of the nearest vegetation, significantly different from those of the adults. Results showed that the Turpan wonder gecko did not utilize microhabitats according to their availability, but rather that it preferred rnicrohabitats which contained dead wood or the caper bush. Our results suggested that burrow characteristics and microhabitat selection were important factors in T. roborowskii adaptation to harsh and arid desert habitats.

Background:In the face of continued degradation and loss of wetlands in the Yangtze River floodplain(YRF),there is an urgent need to monitor the abundance and distribution of wintering *** understand fully observed annual changes,we need to monitor demographic rates to understand factors affecting global population *** reproduction success contributes to dynamic changes in population size and age structure,so an assessment of the juvenile ratio(*** winter birds as a proportion of total number aged)of overwintering waterbirds can be an important indicator of the reproductive success in the preceding breeding ***:During 2016-2019,we sampled juvenile ratios among 10 key waterbird species from the wetlands in the *** on these data,we here attempt to establish a simple,efficient,focused and reliable juvenile ratio monitoring scheme,to assess consistently and accurately relative annual breeding success and its contribution to the age structure among these waterbird ***:We compared juvenile ratio data collected throughout the winter and found that the optimal time for undertaking these samples was in the early stages of arrival for migratory waterbirds reaching their wintering area(early to mid-December).We recommend counting consistently at key points(*** where>1%biogeographical flyway population were counted)at sites of major flyway importance(Poyang lake,east dongting lake,Shengjin lake,Caizi lake,Longgan lake and Chen lake).Based on this,the error rate of the programme(155 planned points,the count of 10 waterbird species is 826-8955)is less than 5%.Conclusions:We established a juvenile ratio monitoring programme for 10 key waterbird species in the wetlands of the YRF,and discuss the feasibility and necessity of implementing such a future programme,and how to use these data in our monitoring and understanding of the population dynamics of these waterbird populations.

Influences of the Weather and Climate on Wintering Migratory Bird in dongting lake

[Objective] The research aimed to study influences of the weather and climate on wintering migratory bird in dongting lake. [Method] Bird analysis data provided by east dongting lake national nature reserve and wintering migratory bird monitoring data in big and small west lakes in recent 5 years were used. By combing water level data and various meteorological factors in Chenglingji, wintering migratory bird in dongting lake was analyzed. [Result] Abnormal precipitation led to drought or flood in dongting lake, causing significant adverse effect on the birds. Abnormal climate was important reason for that wintering migratory bird greatly reduced, such as high temperature and later going south of the strong cold air. Extreme weather and climate events led that some birds in dongting lake significantly reduced. Meteorological element had certain influence to bird survey. We should select a reasonable investigation time based on weather and climate. In Birding Festival, weather had little effect on bird species observation. In the migratory season of bird, we could see many birds in fine cold weather after a strong cold air, which suitable for observing bird. When it was low temperature or less rain in autumn, and was high temperature or more rain and sunshine in early winter, it was suitable for migratory birds wintering in dongting lake. Ardea cinerea, Anser fabalis and Anser erythropus were more in sunny days while Phalacrocorax carbo was more in rainy weather. Grus grus was more in heavy wind weather while Recurvirostra avosetta was more in small wind weather. [Conclusion] The research provided scientific basis for studying migratory bird in east dongting lake.

Phylogenetic and Molecular Analysis of an H7N7 Avian Influenza Virus Isolated in east dongting lake in 2012

Objective In March 2012, an H7N7 subtype avian influenza virus （AIV） named A/wild goose/dongting/PC0360/2022 （H7N7）（DT/PC0360） was recovered from a wild goose in east dongting lake. We performed whole-genome sequencing of the isolate, and analyzed the phylogenetic and molecular characterization. Methods RNA was extracted from environment samples （including fecal samples from wild bird or domestic ducks, and water samples） for detecting the presence of Influenza A Virus targeting Matrix gene, using realtime RT-PCR assay. The positive samples were performed virus isolation with embryonated eggs. The subtype of the isolates were identified by RT-PCR assay with the HI-HI6 and N1-N9 primer set. The whole-genome sequencing of isolates were performed. Phylogenetic and molecular characterizations of the eight genes of the isolates were analyzed. Results Our results suggested that all the eight gene segments of DT/PC0360 belonged to the Eurasian gene pool, and the HA gene were belonged to distinct sublineage with H7N9 AIV which caused outbreaks in China's Mainland in 2013. The hemagglutinin cleavage site of HA of DT/PC0360 showed characterization of low pathogenic avian influenza virus. Conclusion Strengthening the surveillance of AlVs of wild waterfowl and poultry in this region is vita for our knowledge of the ecology and mechanism of transmission to prevent an influenza pandemic.

Seasonal changes in the number of Relict Gull (Larus relictus) at Ebinur lake, Western China

The Relict Gull(Larus relictus) is recognized as a vulnerable species,with a worldwide population of about 6,000 *** inhabiting the extreme arid regions of Central Asia,their migratory routes and winter grounds are *** research focused on distribution sites,habitat,behavior,population size and seasonal changes of Relict *** transects and point counts in every month were used to investigate the gulls around the Ebinur *** result showed Relict Gull was summer visitor to Xinjiang,Western *** curve with a single peak was *** gull appeared in early April and was 63 individuals(1% of the global population).The number remained stable from May to July in *** discovery of fledglings indi-cates that Relict Gull may breed *** left Ebinur lake in *** Gull in Ebinur lake should belong to the Central Asian subpopulation,which was the most westerly record in China.

Temporal-spatial patterns of intestinal parasites of the Hooded Crane(Grus monacha) wintering in lakes of the middle and lower Yangtze River floodplain

Background: Parasites have adverse effects on the life and survival of many migratory waterbirds, especially birds on the endangered species list. Hooded Cranes are large migratory colonial waterbirds wintering in wetlands,which are prone to parasite infection, thus monitoring the diversity of parasites is important for sound wetland management and protection of this ***: From November 2012 to April 2013, we collected 821 fresh faecal samples from the three lakes(Poyang,Caizi and Shengjin lake) in the lower and middle Yangtze River floodplain, and detected with saturated brine floating and centrifugal sedimentation methods. Parasite eggs were quantified with a modified Mc Master's counting ***: In this study, 11 species of parasites were discovered, i.e., two coccidium(Eimeria gruis, E. reichenowi), five nematodes(Capillaria sp., Strongyloides sp., Ascaridia sp., Trichostrongylus sp., Ancylostomatidae), three trematodes(Echinostoma sp., Echinochasmus sp., Fasciolopsis sp.) and one cestode(Hymenolepis sp.). About 57.7% of the faecal samples showed parasitic infection. All species of parasites were found at the three sites except Hymenolepis which was not found at Poyang lake. While most samples were affected by only one or two species of parasites, infection by Eimeria spp. was the most common(53.1%). From One-Way ANOVA analysis of the three lakes, parasite species richness index(p = 0.656), diversity index(p = 0.598) and evenness index(p = 0.612) showed no significant difference. According to the statistical analysis of our data, there were no significant difference in parasite species richness index(p = 0.678) and evenness index(p = 0.238) between wintering periods, but a strong difference in diversity index(p < 0.05).Conclusions: Our study suggests that in the wintering Hooded Crane populations, parasite diversity is more sensitive to changes in the overwintering periods than to locations.
