＜正＞Intense electron beam-driven diodes are being developed for flash x-ray radiography at 7.5-12 MV on the RITS-6 accelerator at Sandia National *** of several diodes under investigation is the paraxial diode in which a 40-kA electron beam is formed in vacuum,propagated through a thin anode foil,and focused inside a gas-filled transport cell onto a high-atomic-number target to generate *** key objectives are to produce a small spot size,＜5 mm,and high forward-directed dose,＞600 R@1m. Particle-in-cell（PIC） simulations have shown that the primary limitation in spot size is the finite decay of the plasma return current which causes the beam focal position to sweep axially during the pulse,hence leading to an increased time-integrated spot size [1].Recently obtained time-resolved measurements of the spot size which support this hypothesis are *** of these results was aided by PIC simulations in which additional physical processes were included,such as stimulated ion emission from the foil and increasing area of cathode emission [2]. Other outstanding issues for the paraxial diode on RITS-6 are also presented which include electron power-flow coupling to the diode,cavity modes which may affect focusing,and gas-breakdown physics models. Measurements of dose,dose rate,time-integrated （and time- resolved） spot size,and current are reported from experimental results primarily at 7.5 ***-resolved images of the cathode emission are also presented.

Unique Pulsed-Laser Deposition Production of Anatase and Rutile TiO2on Al2O3

Two pure hexagonal phases of titanium dioxide, anatase and rutile, were grown on c-cut Al2O3 substrates via pulsed-laser deposition by changing only the growth and annealing conditions, but without changing the substrate, target, or working gas. Purity of each phase was confirmed by x-ray diffraction, the quality of each film was studied using atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, and the interface between each substrate and film was studied using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A binding layer of Ti2O3 was found to explain anatase growth under the very large lattice mismatch conditions.

Refractory high-entropy alloys present attractive mechanical properties,i.e.,high yield strength and fracture toughness,making them potential candidates for structural *** of atomic and electronic interactions are important to reveal the origins for the formation of high-entropy alloys and their structure−dominated mechanical properties,thus enabling the development of a predictive approach for rapidly designing advanced ***,we report the atomic and electronic basis for the valence−electron-concentration-categorized principles and the observed serration behavior in high-entropy alloys and highentropy metallic glass,including MoNbTaW,MoNbVW,MoTaVW,HfNbTiZr,and Vitreloy-1 MG(Zr_(41)Ti_(14)Cu_(12.5)Ni_(10)Be_(22.5)).We find that the yield strengths of high-entropy alloys and high-entropy metallic glass are a power-law function of the electron-work function,which is dominated by local atomic ***,a reliance on the bonding-charge density provides a groundbreaking insight into the nature of loosely bonded spots in *** presence of strongly bonded clusters and weakly bonded glue atoms imply a serrated deformation of high-entropy alloys,resulting in intermittent avalanches of defects movement.

Target fabrication for the POLAR experiment on the Orion laser facility

This article describes the fabrication of a suite of laser targets by the Target Fabrication group in the Central Laser Facility(CLF), STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory for the first academic-access experiment on the Orion laser facility(Hopps et al., Appl. Opt. 52, 3597–3601(2013)) at atomic weapons establishment(AWE). This experiment, part of the POLAR project(Falize et al., Astrophys. Space Sci. 336, 81–85(2011); Busschaert et al., New J. Phys. 15, 035020(2013)),studied conditions relevant to the radiation-hydrodynamic processes occurring in a remarkable class of astrophysical star systems known as magnetic cataclysmic variables. A large number of complex fabrication technologies and research and development activities were required to field a total of 80 high-specification targets. Target design and fabrication procedures are described and initial alignment and characterization data are discussed.
