Nitrogen (N) and Phosphorus (P) are of the most important and complex nutrients for the crop plants in particular for grain yield and quality. The field trials were laid out in randomized complete block design having three replications. Research trial plots were located at Agricultural Research Farm of Agricultural University Peshawar (Ameer Mohammad Khan Campus Mardan) during kharif season in 2012 to investigate the response of maize variety (Jalal) to three phosphorus rates (60, 90 and 120 kg·ha-1) and four nitrogen rates (90, 120, 150, 180 kg·ha-1) for agronomical traits. These traits investigated included number of plant per m2 (NP m2), plant height (PH), number of leaves plant-1 (NLP), leaf area plant-1·cm2 (LAP), fresh weight of plants kg·ha-1 (FW) and dry weight of plant kg·ha-1 (DW), were investigated. Results of the study showed that application of N @ 180 and P @ 120 kg·ha-1 significantly increased fodder yield of maize. The linear increase in biomass yield clearly indicated that N was a limiting nutrient factor and that N demand along with P has a positive response. At higher application rates, N fertilizer significantly increased biomass component, improved N uptake with increasing nitrogen use efficiency and decreased its losses to the environment and below plant zone. So this study showed that the phosphorus and nitrogen fertilizers have a positive effect on the fodder yield of maize.

The pain experienced during labour varies from one person to another. The objective of this study is to evaluate the experience of analgesia during labour in three maternity hospitals in Cameroon. Methodology: This was a cross-sectional analytical study conducted over 4 months, from 1 December 2019 to 31 March 2020, at the Yaoundé Gynaecological-Obstetric Hospital, the Yaoundé Central Hospital and the Douala General Hospital. We compared 35 parturients who delivered vaginally under analgesia and 79 parturients who delivered without analgesia. The data collected were compared using Chi 2 and Fischer tests with a significance level of P Results: Parturients aged 30 - 40 years (P = 0.03), public sector employees (P = 0.002) and private sector employees (P Conclusion: Analgesia delivery offers a better birth experience, however it may have negligible side effects.

Evaluation of habitat quality for selected wildlife species associated with island back channels

The islands and associated back channels on the Ohio River, USA, are believed to provide critical habitat features for several wildlife species. However, few studies have quantitatively evaluated habitat quality in these areas. Our main objective was to evaluate the habitat quality of back and main channel areas for several species using habitat suitability index (HSI) models. To test the effectiveness of these models, we attempted to relate HSI scores and the variables measured for each model with measures of relative abundance for the model species. The mean belted kingfisher (Ceryle alcyon) HSI was greater on the main than back channel. However, the model failed to predict kingfisher abundance. The mean reproduction component of the great blue heron (Ardea herodias) HSI, total common muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) HSI, winter cover component of the snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) HSI, and brood-rearing component of the wood duck (Aix sponsa) HSI were all greater on the back than main channel, and were positively related with the relative abundance of each species. We found that island back channels provide characteristics not found elsewhere on the Ohio River and warrant conservation as important riparian wildlife habitat. The effectiveness of using HSI models to predict species abundance on the river was mixed. Modifications to several of the models are needed to improve their use on the Ohio River and, likely, other large rivers.

Slaughtering Performance and Meat Quality of Hainan Black Goat and Its Hybrid Offsprings with Nubian Black Goat

In order to compare the slaughter performance and meat quality of Hainan black goats and hybrid offsprings of Nubian Black Goat and Hainan Black Goat, six 7-month-old Hainan black goats and six hybrid offsprings were selected to determine slaughter performance and muscle quality. The results showed that hybridization of Nubian black goat and Hainan black goat significantly improved the production performance and slaughter performance of hybrid offsprings (P>0.05). The meat quality of F1 hybrid black goat had no significant difference with that of Hainan black goat except for the hardness and elasticity (P<0.05). Therefore, the crossbred progenies of Nubian black goat and Hainan black goat have advantages in meat yield and meat performance, and the main meat quality indexes are not significantly different, which meets the market requirements for high-yield and high-quality hybrid combinations, and can be used for cross promotion.

Objective: To highlight the differences in mode of delivery between women augmented with intravenous oxytocin because of failure to progress in labour with those who labour without the need for augmentation. Study design: An incidence study over a 5-year-period in a tertiary referral hospital comparing 1097 nulliparous women who were augmented in labour with 2745 nulliparous women who did not need augmentation. Only labours of spontaneous onset in the pregnancies of women at term were studied. The incidence of pregnancy outcomes were assessed by presenting estimates of relative risk (RR) and their 95%confidence intervals (CI). Results: Only 51.1%of women who received augmentation achieved a normal vaginal delivery compared with 76.5%of women who did not need augmentation (RR 0.67; CI 0.63-0.71). Contributory factors to this disparity included a greater number of Caesarean sections (14.4%versus 6.6%; RR 2.18 CI 1.74-2.67), forcep deliveries (12.8%versus 5.3%; RR 2.41 CI 1.93-3.01) and ventouse deliveries (21.7%versus 11.5%; RR 1.89 CI 1.62-2.21) being performed among augmented labours as compared to normal progressive labours. Conclusion: Significant improvements in the management of labours which fail to progress are needed if normal vaginal delivery rates are to approach those seen in labours which progress without the need for augmentation.

Objective. Obstetrical prognosis for women suffering from Crohn’s disease and from ulcerative colitis, and consequences of pregnancy on inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Patients and methods. Retrospective study, of 76 pregnancies, after the diagnosis of IBD among 77 women (33 ulcerative colitis, 44 Crohn’s disease). Results. Pregnancy did not modify the evolutive profile of IBD. No particular gravity of IBD revealed during pregnancy or post-partum was noticed. The outcome of the 54 pregnancies associated with quiescent IBD was the same as in the general population. Five of ten pregnancies started during an active period of Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis ended in fetal loss (3 spontaneous abortions, 2 medical terminations). In women with a first acute episode or IBD reactivation during pregnancy (n=12), one-third of the newborns were low weight for gestational age, one-third were born preterm and only one-third were term babies with normal weight. Vaginal delivery did not trigger development or exacerbation of perianal Crohn’s disease (n=20). Cesarean section was performed in 2 with an ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (n=4) and 1 patient with an ileo-rectal anastomosis (n=3) to avoid injury to the anal sphincter. Ileostomy (n=2) did not contraindicate delivery. Conclusion. Control of IBD is the main obstetrical factor for prognosis. Starting pregnancy can be advised if the disease is quiescent, with rapid and efficient management of possible flare-ups. Delivery route must be determined on a case-by-case basis, each considering pregestational anal continence and the clinical presentation of the perineum.
