This paper examines inflation dynamics in Greater China. Using an asymmetric error correction model we investigate how inflation in Hong Kong and Macao are related to inflation in Chinese Mainland. Our results based on data from July 1997 to December 2012 reveal that a long-term equilibrium relation exists between inflation in Chinese Mainland and inflation in both Hong Kong and Macao, the two Special Administrative Regions of China. The degree of inflation pass-through is higher for Macao than for Hong Kong. Moreover, we find no evidence of asymmetries in either Hong Kong and Macao＇s adjustment speeds towards long-run equilibrium or in the short-run pass-through of accelerating or decelerating inflation in the Mainland. Collectively, our results show a close relationship among price dynamics of the three economies and call for a reconsideration of the exchange rate anchor in the Greater China Region.

In the post-reform era, China achieved poverty reduction that was unprecedented in human history This poverty reduction was accompanied by fast growth and worsening income distribution. The present paper examines the poverty-growth-inequality triangle in China by.＂（i） providing growth, inequality and poverty profiles at the national and provincial levels; （ii） uncovering the contributions of growth and inequality changes to poverty reduction; and, finally, （iii） drawing lessons for other developing countries. Based on the World Bank＇s definition of the poverty line, China has already eliminated abject poverty, even though the poverty rate was as high as 88.3 percent in 1981. The remarkable record in poverty reduction is predominantly attributable to growth. The effect of inequality varied in different periods. In addition, the impact of growth on poverty reduction is found to be diminishing over time, a phenomenon worth further research and policy attention.

Following China＇s accession to the World Trade Organization （WTO）, it has been impossible to overlook the influence of its economy on the multilateral trading system. Many published studies have examined why China joined the WTO and the comprehensive impacts of WTO membership on China, but few studies have focused on China＇s impact on the WTO. This article attempts to fill this gap by examining China＇s changing role in the multilateral trading system from political and legal perspectives, seeking to shed light on how Chinese characteristics have reshaped the power structure and rule-based system of the WTO. While its accession has made the WTO more relevant in regards to global trade governance, China has been accused of upsetting the WTO＇s rules-based system because of its unique political and economic regime. The WTO and its members should take the Chinese characteristics into consideration and regulate China＇s practices through using the dispute settlement mechanism, promoting China＇s accession to plurilateral agreements and adopting a ＂＇soft law ＂＂ approach.

Financing alternatives for small and medium enterprises in China are discussed in the present study. In particular, we analyze the significant changes and developments m China＇s ＂second board＂ stock market. China ＇s extensive network of regional assets and equity exchanges, which were set up to facilitate private equity transfer, and non-performing loan transactions seem to partially fill the void for small and medium enterprises, which cannot easily obtain approval for listing on the stock exchanges. Foreign investors can identify investment opportunities in non-listed domestic state-owned and private businesses through these regional assets and equity exchanges. At the same time, foreign stock markets are now attracting the young Chinese enterprises to list their stocks on their exchanges.

Influence of International Openness on Corporate Environmental Performance in China

This paper examines how international openness influences China＇s corporate environmental performance. A unique firm-level dataset is constructed by combining two databases： the Annual Industrial Survey and the China Green Watch Program Rating System. The empirical results obtained from a series of ordered probit models indicate that openness has a positive relation to corporate environmental performance in China. However, the two main market- opening strategies in China, exporting and attracting foreign investment, have different effects on environmental performance. The results reveal that foreign investment plays a substantial andpositive role that can support the environmental spillovers in China. However, the effect of exporting is insignificant. The environmental pressure from foreign customers to improve Chinese firms＇ environmental performance presents a challenge. Our study indicates that China could make environmental quality improvements through increased international openness, as is likely the case for other developing countries.

Friedman＇s plucking model of business fluctuations suggests that output cannot exceed an upper limit, but it is occasionally ＂plucked＂ downward below trends as a result of economic recessions. This paper investigates China＇s business fluetuations using quarterly real GDP data for the period 1978 2009. Our results show some evidence supporting Friedman＇s plucking model. We find that a ceiling effect of real output exists, and that negative asymmetric shocks significantly affect the transitory component, which captures the plucking downward behavior during the recession. The results also suggest that the basic asymmetric unobserved component model is not appropriate for directly modeling China＇s real output because the business＂ cycle is inaccurately measured, but it works quite well when considering a structural break in the second quarter of 1992. The results reveal that although China＇s economy strengthened in the second quarter of 2009, it is essential for China＇s government to take further positive and effective measures to maintain sustainable development of the economy.

The main objective of this study is to explore the food security status among people living in rural *** paper draws on data collected during a field study conducted between September 15 and October 30,*** study examines the'Food Security Approach'developed by the Food and Agricultural *** research investigated the current state of food availability,accessibility,utilization,and food stability among purposively selected informants in the study *** study utilizes qualitative research tools,specifically in-depth interviews(IDIs),and focus group discussions(FGDs).In total,40 informants were chosen followed by purposive sampling and five FGDs were *** emerged that daily foodstuffs are not sufficiently available in nearby shops or markets to meet people's daily consumption *** food prices and transportation issues are meaningful indicators that shape whether food is accessible to consumers.A lack of a wide variety of dietary foods indicates the current state of food stability,while recent inflation and climatic factors such as drought and flash floods lead to food *** research recommends that the government of Bangladesh(GoB)should upgrade social protection programs through Open Market Sales(OMS),and the informal sector to improve both people's consumption and production of food so that it is secured in the study area.
