Many carnivores require large ranges to meet their ecological and energetic needs;however,anthropogenic changes threaten species and their *** traps have been used to effectively collect data on carnivores in a variety of habitat types;however,a single survey effort is typically limited to species that have similar body size,habitat use and movement patterns,and individual identification of animals is not always pos*** evaluated whether scat detection dogs could effectively survey for 4 wide-ranging felids that vary in these characteristics:jaguars(Panthera onca),pumas(Puma concolor),ocelots(Leopardus pardalis)and oncillas(Leopardus tigrinus).From June to October 2009 and May to August 2011,a detection dog-handler team detected 588 scats,from which 176 unique genotypes were *** assigned sex to 84.7%of the genotyped scats and identified 55 individuals multiple *** effectiveness of these noninvasive techniques(detection dogs and genetic analyses of scat)not only opens the door for additional studies in areas that were previously difficult or impossible with standard survey techniques,but also provides conservationists with a set of tools that overcome some of the limitations associated with the use of camera traps alone.

We present,to the best of our knowledge,the first implementation of full-field quantum optical coherence tomography(FF-QOCT).In our system,we are able to obtain full three-dimensional(3D)information about the internal structure of a sample under study by relying on transversely resolved Hong–Ou–Mandel(HOM)interferometry with the help of an intensified CCD(ICCD)*** system requires a single axial scan,obtaining full-field transverse single-photon intensity in coincidence with the detection of the sibling photon for each value of the signal-idler temporal *** believe that this capability constitutes a significant step forward toward the implementation of QOCT as a practical biomedical imaging technique.

defining impact significance is the main technical task that influences decision-making during the Environmental Licensing Procedure(ELP).The ELP begins with screening to determine potentially significant impacts of the proposed *** then follows to address any interventions deemed worthy of attention in the production of an Environmental Impact Assessment(EIA).This will include consideration of relevant landforms and geomorphological ***,preliminary assessments of environmental impacts often lack the scientific robustness to procure substantive and transactive *** review presents an examination of the established practices of screening and scoping while highlighting the foremost challenges to improve the technical grounds of the *** analysis of screening and scoping practices stresses the need for novel methods that ensure the sequential reasoning between their criteria while improving the preliminary evaluation of impact *** the inherent subjectivity of discretionary judgment requires scientific methodologies that acknowledge the interaction between the natural system and human interventions,which has been addressed by geomorphological *** knowledge consolidated in this review opens the gate to explore the compatibility between the United nations strategy of Ecosystem Approach(EA)with the ELP through a novel geomorphological interpretation of the ***,this diagnosis demonstrate that screening and scoping practices would benefit from reliable methods that balance the precautionary principle with the efficient character required in the ELP.

One of the most prominent features of quantum entanglement is its invariability under local unitary transformations,which implies that the degree of entanglement or nonseparability remains constant during free-space propagation,true for both quantum and classically entangled *** we demonstrate an exception to this rule using a carefully engineered vectorial light field,and we study its nonseparability dynamics upon free-space *** show that the local nonseparability between the spatial and polarization degrees of freedom dramatically decays to zero while preserving the purity of the state and hence the global *** show this by numerical simulations and corroborate it *** results evince novel properties of classically entangled modes and point to the need for new measures of nonseparability for such vectorial fields,while paving the way for novel applications for customized structured light.

High-efficiency submegahertz bandwidth photon pair generators will enable the field of quantum technology to transition from laboratory demonstrations to transformational applications involving information transfer from photons to *** spontaneous parametric processes are able to achieve high-efficiency photon pair generation,the spectral bandwidth tends to be relatively large,as defined by phase-matching *** solve this fundamental limitation,we use an ultrahigh quality factor(Q)fused silica microsphere resonant cavity to form a photon pair *** present the full theory for the spontaneous four-wave mixing(SFWM)process in these devices,fully taking into account all relevant source characteristics in our *** exceptionally narrow(down to kilohertz-scale)linewidths of these devices result in a reduction in the bandwidth of the photon pair generation,allowing submegahertz spectral bandwidth to be ***,using a pump source centered around 1550 nm,photon pairs with the signal and idler modes at wavelengths close to 1540 and 1560 nm,respectively,are *** herald a single idler-mode photon by detecting the corresponding signal photon,filtered via transmission through a wavelength division multiplexing channel of *** demonstrate the extraction of the spectral profile of a single peak in the single-photon frequency comb from a measurement of the signal–idler time of emission *** improvements in device design and experimental methods enabled the narrowest spectral width(Δν=366 k Hz)to date in a heralded single-photon source based on SFWM.

An experimental study of the nonlinear changes in refractive index and transmission coefficient of single-crystal ZnSe:Fe2+, fabricated through the Fe-diffusion method, at long-pulse (~300 ns), sub-mJ, 2.94-mm Z-scan probing is reported. As well, a theoretical model based on the generalized Avizonis-Grotbeck equations is developed and applied for straightforward fitting of the open- and closed-aperture Z-scans, obtained for ZnSe:Fe2+ with different Fe2+ centers concentrations. The modeling results reveal that the contributions in the absorption and refractive index nonlinearities of ZnSe:Fe2+ are “common” resonant-absorption saturation (the minor part) and pulse-induced heating of the samples (the major part), which are strongly dependent on Fe2+ concentrations. Large values of the index change (>~10-3) and partial resonant-absorption bleaching (limited by ~50%), both produced via the thermal effect mainly, are the features of the ZnSe:Fe2+ samples inherent to this type of excitation.

Breast cancer is the number one cause of can- cer deaths among Hispanic women in the United States, and in Mexico, it recently became the primary cause of cancer deaths. This malign- nancy represents a poorly understood and un- derstudied disease in Hispanic women. The ELLA Binational Breast Cancer Study was es- tablished in 2006 as a multi-center study to as- sess patterns of breast tumor markers, clinical characteristics, and their risk factors in women of Mexican descent. We describe the design and implementation of the ELLA Study and provide a risk factor comparison between women in the U.S. and those in Mexico based on a sample of 765 patients (364 in the U.S. and 401 in Mexico). Compared to women in Mexico, U.S. women had significantly (p n live births) and breastfeeding rates (57.5% vs. 80.5%), higher use of oral contraceptives (60.7% vs. 50.1%) and hormone replacement therapy (23.3% vs. 7.6%), and higher family history of breast cancer (15.7% vs. 9.0%). Re- sults show that differences in breast cancer risk factor patterns exist between Mexico and U.S. women. We provide lessons learned from the conduct of our study. Binational studies are an important step in understanding disease pat- terns and etiology for women in both countries.
