In recent years, researches published on hydrophobic materials increase rapidly, wherein the method for changing hydrophobicity by modifying a micro-array structure on the surface of the material also has been proposed. Of course, if it is possible for us to quantitatively analyse and evaluate hydrophobicity of different structures of one certain material at first, this task will greatly optimize the design of actual structures. In this work, we used the algorithm for Laminar Two-Phase Flow, Horizontal-set method integrated in COMSOL to build two single-pore simulation structures in different shapes and simulated the behaviour of the liquid transition from Cassie-state to Wenzel-state during the impregnation process. After that, the intrinsic contact angle of Structure T (a porous structure with a T-shaped sectional profile) was obtained under a certain pressure which maintained liquids in Cassie-state. Meanwhile, two equilibrium states of the liquid-air interface as well as two different patterns of the equilibrium state disrupting were found in Structure R (a porous structure with a Chamfered T-shaped sectional profile). Simulation results show that the modelling method can be applied for simulating the hydrophobicity of different porous structures and optimizing the procedures for the design of the micro-array efficiently.

The Equatorial Undercurrent（EUC） plays an important role in ocean circulation and global climate change. Near the equator, as the Coriolis parameter goes to 0, equatorial currents cannot be described by geostrophy in which the pressure gradient force term is balanced by the Coriolis force term. Many previous studies focus on the relationships between the EUC and El Ni？o-Southern Oscillation（ENSO）, the thermocline, sea surface topography, the distribution of equatorial wind stress and other atmosphere-ocean factors. However, little attention has been paid to the northward pressure gradient（NGT）, which may also be important to the EUC. The pressure can be regarded as a complex nonlinear function of terms including temperature, salinity and density.This study attempts to reveal the connection between a function of the northward pressure gradient（FNP） and the EUC. The connection is derived from primitive equations, by simplifying the equations with using scaling analysis, and shows that the beta effect may be the main reason why the FNP is important to the EUC. The vertical structure of the EUC can be partially described by the FNP. The NGT has an obvious influence on the EUC while the eastward pressure gradient has a relatively smaller effect.

Introduction:The Florida coast is one of the most species-rich ecosystems in the world.This paper focuses on the sensitivity of the habitat of threatened and endangered shorebirds to sea level rise induced by climate change,and on the relationship of the habitat with the coastline evolution.We consider the resident Snowy Plover(Charadrius alexandrinus nivosus),and the migrant Piping Plover(Charadriusmelodus)and Red Knot(Calidris canutus)along the Gulf Coast of Mexico in Florida.Methods:We analyze and model the coupled dynamics of habitat patches of these imperiled shorebirds and of the shoreline geomorphology dictated by land cover change with consideration of the coastal wetlands.The land cover is modeled from 2006 to 2100 as a function of the A1B sea level rise scenario rescaled to 2 m.Using a maximum-entropy habitat suitability model and a set of macroecological criteria we delineate breeding and wintering patches for each year simulated.Results:Evidence of coupled ecogeomorphological dynamics was found by considering the fractal dimension of shorebird occurrence patterns and of the coastline.A scaling relationship between the fractal dimensions of the species patches and of the coastline was detected.The predicted power law of the patch size emerged from scale-free habitat patterns and was validated against 9 years of observations.We predict an overall 16%loss of the coastal landforms from inundation.Despite the changes in the coastline that cause habitat loss,fragmentation,and variations of patch connectivity,shorebirds self-organize by preserving a power-law distribution of the patch size in time.Yet,the probability of finding large patches is predicted to be smaller in 2100 than in 2006.The Piping Plover showed the highest fluctuation in the patch fractal dimension;thus,it is the species at greatest risk of decline.Conclusions:We propose a parsimonious modeling framework to capture macroscale ecogeomorphological patterns of coastal ecosystems.Our results suggest the potential use of the fractal dimension o

For more than 2500 years, soil tunnels have been used in warfare and smuggling. Initially tunnels were utilized to attack fortresses that were underlain by unconsolidated (non-bedrock) soil materials. Later tunnels provided housing and served as smuggling corridors. The medieval warfare undermining technique involved digging soil tunnels with wooden or beam props to hold up the soil ceilings. Then flammable material, such as hay or straw, was put in the tunnel and set on fire. The fire burnt the support beams which collapsed the soil tunnel ceilings and undermined the overlying perimeter wall. Later gunpowder and dynamite replaced fire when attempting to collapse a tunnel, fortress or perimeter defense. Modern warfare soil tunnels were the pathways used to move troops, weapons and supplies to the other side of a border or wall for surprise attacks. Most of the soil tunnels were placed in easy-to-dig unconsolidated soil materials that had a low water table and were not subject to flooding. Eventually, machinery was used to drill through bedrock permitting deeper and longer tunnels for troop movement or smuggling. However, when drilling through bedrock under international borders, the process creates both noise and vibrations which were often detected by the enemy. Once discovered the tunnels were often collapsed by blowing up the tunnel, injection of gas, filling with water or wastewater, or inserting barriers. A series of case studies will be examined with the goal of determining soil and site criteria required to permit successful tunneling. The most restrictive soil and geologic conditions will be identified as well as potential mitigation methods used to overcome the site restrictions will be documented. Countries with warfare or smuggling issues along their borders, such as Israel and United States, need to identify the sections of the border most likely to be undermined by soil tunnels. In the case of Israel their entire border is susceptible as a result of the favorable arid climate, soils and geology. The
