Vertical variations in planar lamination of marine shale: Elucidating hydrodynamic changes during the Ordovician-Silurian transition on the Upper Yangtze Block

The hydrodynamics and their evolution on the Upper Yangtze Block during the Ordovician-Silurian transition period remain unclear. The present study is an assessment of how regional and global events may have influenced the hydrodynamic evolution based on a planar lamination investigation of the shales from the Upper Yangtze Block. Analyses of large thin sections and argon-ion polished thin sections using field emission-scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM) showed that there are four types of planar lamination, namely, silty graded planar lamination(SGPL), silt-clay graded planar lamination(SCGPL), silt-clay interlaminated planar lamination(SCIPL), and paper-like planar lamination(PPL). SGPL is formed by turbidity current with a flow speed less than 15 cm/s. SCGPL is formed by turbidity currents with a flow speed less than 15 cm/s for normal grading type and 15-25 cm/s for alternating grading type. SCIPL has a continuum of sparsely spaced type, closely spaced type, and alternating type, which is formed by bottom current with an increasing flow speed from 15 to 25 cm/s to above 25 cm/s. PPL can be divided into normal grading and composite grading types. The former is formed by vertical settling, while the latter is formed by bottom current with a flow speed of 5-15 cm/s. Vertically, types of planar lamination varied from SGPL to PPL and then SCIPL manifesting the waxing and waning of flow speed with a positive excursion at graptolite biozone Metabolograptus extraordinarius(WF4) and a negative excursion at graptolite biozone Persculptograptus persculptus(LM1). The sudden decrease in flow speed across Linxiang and graptolite biozone Paraorthograptus pacificus(WF3) and the subsequent progressive increase from graptolite biozone Akidograptus ascensus(LM2)to graptolite biozone Demirastrites triangulatus(LM6) and to graptolite biozone Stimulograptus sedgwickii(LM8) during deposition of the Ordovician-Silurian transition succession on the Upper Yangtze Block were linked to th

research on the ecohydrological processes of terrestrial plants is a frontier field comprising ecology,hydrology and global change research,yielding the key theoretical foundations of *** karst areas,due to its unique geological background,the karst landscape is strongly developed,with high bedrock exposure,high permeability,fragmented soils,shallow soils,and high spatial heterogeneity,resulting in very limited water storage for plant uptake and growth in rock fissures and shallow ***,water conditions are an important ecological factor influencing plant *** comprehensively understand the current progress and development trends in plant water use research focusing on karst areas,this paper uses the VOSviewer software to analyze the literature on plant water use in karst areas between 1984 and *** results showed that:(1)research on plant water use in karst areas has developed rapidly worldwide,and the number of relevant studies in the literature have increased year by year,which together means that it is attracting more and more attention.(2)The investigation of plant water sources,geological background of karst areas,seasonal arid tropical climates,the relationship betweenδ13C values and plant water use efficiency,karst plant water use in karst savannas and subtropical areas,and ecosystems under climate change yields the knowledge base in this field.(3)Most studies in this area focus on the division of water sources of plants in karst areas,the methods of studying the water use sources of plants,and the water use strategies and efficiency of plants.(4)Future research will focus on how plant water use in karst areas is influenced by Earth’s critical zones,climate change,and ecohydrological *** studies will provide a key scientific basis for guiding ecological restoration and promoting sustainable development in karst areas.

Large basins are currently the global focus for geothermal development,with their hydrothermal system being controlled by a variety of factors,such as basement relief and fracture *** is located at the north of the Cangxian uplift in the North China Basin,the concentrated geothermal resource development zone in North *** study systematically collects temperature logging data and long-term dynamic monitoring of water level and water quality as well as group well tracer test data carried out in this area in recent years,on the basis of which the hydrothermal controlling role of the deep hidden faults is systematically *** results show that the Cangdong fault communicates with different geothermal reservoirs in the shallow part and plays a specific role in the water-heat channel of the local *** a result,the high-value area of the geothermal temperature gradient in the sedimentary layer of the Donglihu area is distributed around the Cangdong *** geothermal reservoir temperature of the Minghuazhen Formation within the influence of the fault is also significantly higher than the regional average,the hydraulic head of different geothermal reservoirs showing a consistent and synergistic ***,the water quality has been stable for many years without any apparent *** understanding has a particular significance for further deepening understanding of the geothermal genesis mechanism in sedimentary basins and guiding future geothermal exploration and development in the Donglihu area.

Advanced casting technologies for lightweight automotive applications

This paper provides an overview of alloy and process developments in aluminum and magnesium castings for lightweight automotive applications. Wear-resistant aluminum alloys, creep-resistant and high strength/ductility magnesium alloys have been developed for automotive applications. On the process front, vacuumassisted die casting and high vacuum die casting technologies have been developed for high-integrity body and chassis applications. Thin-wall and hollow casting components are being produced by low-pressure die casting processes for structural applications. Overcasting technology is gaining traction and has enabled mixed material designs for automotive sub-systems such as engine cradles and instrument panel beams. Simulation tools developed to predict the interfacial interactions of the dissimilar components and the structural integrity of the overcast systems are being validated in the casting trials.
