Influence of dietary taurine and housing density on oviduct function in laying hens

Experiments were conducted to study the effects of dietary taurine and housing density on oviduct function in laying hens. Green-shell laying hens were randomly assigned to a free range group and two caged groups, one with low-density and the other with high-density housing. Each group was further divided into control（C） and taurine treatment（T） groups. All hens were fed the same basic diet except that the T groups＇ diet was supplemented with 0.1% taurine. The experiment lasted 15 d. Survival rates, laying rates, daily feed consumption, and daily weight gain were recorded. Histological changes, inflammatory mediator levels, and oxidation and anti-oxidation levels were determined. The results show that dietary taurine supplementation and reduced housing density significantly attenuated pathophysiological changes in the oviduct. Nuclear factor-κB（NF-κB） DNA binding activity increased significantly in the high-density housing group compared with the two other housing groups and was reduced by taurine supplementation. Tumor necrosis factor-α（TNF-α） m RNA expression in the high-density and low-density C and T groups increased significantly. In the free range and low-density groups, dietary taurine significantly reduced the expression of TNF-α m RNA. Supplementation with taurine decreased interferon-γ（IFN-γ） m RNA expression significantly in the low-density groups. Interleukin 4（IL-4） m RNA expression was significantly higher in caged hens. IL-10 m RNA expression was higher in the high-density C group than in the free range and low-density C groups. Supplementation with taurine decreased IL-10 m RNA expression significantly in the high-density group and increased superoxide dismutase（SOD） activity in the free range hens. We conclude that taurine has important protective effects against oviduct damage. A survey on porcine circovirus type 2 infection and phylogenetic analysis of its ORF2 gene in Hangzhou,zhejiang province,China

Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is closely related to the postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS). In this study, the pig serum and tissue samples collected from different regions of Hangzhou District in zhejiang province of China between 2003 and 2005 were analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for PCV2 antibody and by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for ORF2 gene. The results show that out of 1250 randomly collected serum samples, 500 sera (40%) were seropositive for PCV2. PCR results demonstrate that Hangzhou PCV2 with more than 50% Chinese PCV2 strains and French PCV2 formed Cluster A. Only one PCV2 from Hangzhou belonged to Cluster B with some other Chinese PCV2 and Netherlands’s isolates. Cluster C consisted of PCV2 isolates from China, US, Canada, UK and Germany. The results indicate that the PCV2 infection was widespread in Hangzhou.

Dear Editor,Astroviruses(AstVs)are non-enveloped,single-stranded RNA viruses with a diameter of approximately 35 nm(Madeley and Cosgrove 1975).The genomes of AstVs range in size from 6.8 to 7.9 kb(De Benedictis et al.2011),consisting of a 5'-untranslated region(UTR),three open reading frames(ORFs),a 3'-UTR,and a poly-adenylated(polyA)tail(Pantin-Jackwood et al.2006).In 1975,AstVs were first discovered in faeces of infants(Madeley and Cosgrove 1975).Until now,a variety of animal species,including cows,sheep,pigs,dogs,deer,rats,bats,chickens,ducks,turkeys,sea lions and seals have been reported to be infected with AstVs(Tzipori et al.1981;Cattoli et al.2007;Chu et al.2008,2010;Atkins et al.2009;Toffan et al.2009;Rivera et al.2010;Guix et al.2013;Kang et al.2012;Reuter et al.2012a,2012b;Li et al.2021).Currently,AstVs comprise two genera,Mamastrovirus(MAstV)and Avastrovirus(AAstV).Herein,we describe three novel AAstVs identified from dead crow *** our knowledge,this is the first report for identification of AstVs in crows.

To evaluate the specific immune responses induced by recombinant Lactococcus lactis（***） which expresses porcine epidemic diarrhea virus（PEDV） S1 protein through oral administration,the spike gene fragment of PEDV was amplified from PEDV SDLY strain to construct p MG36 e-S1 recombinant *** recombinant plasmid was then electro-transferred into competent cells of *** MG1363,to prepare the recombinant *** expressing S1 protein of *** expression of target protein was identified by SDS-PAGE and *** Zealand white rabbits were orally administered with the recombinant strain;the antibody titer in intestinal mucosa and serum was detected by neutralizing test;and the specific Ig G in serum was evaluated by indirect *** results showed that the recombinant *** could effectively induce high level of Ig G in serum and high level of mucosal immune *** recombinant *** is qualified to be a potential oral vaccine because it could successfully stimulate both humoral and mucosal immune responses against PEDV.
